*How to ORGANIZE a Compare and Contrast STRUCTURE Response:
“Name It (BOTH text titles & authors), Verb It, *Blurb It (*state common meaning,

subject, or comment that BOTH texts are making). Brief SUMMARY (literal meaning) of TEXT

#1 AND Text #2. EXPLAIN how each text uses either a similar structure or different structure to

convey their meaning. Then EXPLAIN the unstated thematic meaning/ central idea of TEXT #1

& #2. State & Explain the STRUCTURAL ELEMENT(s) found in Text 1 (Reason #1). Introduce &

cite 1 piece of support that illustrates an example of the Structural Element (stated). Transition

& analyze- explain WHY this is an example of the structural element? WHAT does the

structural element reveal about the author’s purpose? HOW does the structural element help

reinforce text’s central idea? HOW does this structural element connect to the OTHER text?

WHY did the author make this choice? (?If the structural element was changed or different,

how would that affect or change the meaning of the text? How does this structural element aid

in either reinforcing or negating, proving wrong, the meaning of the OTHER text?). Transition,

EXPLAIN the unstated thematic meaning/ central idea of TEXT #2. State & explain the

STRUCTURAL ELEMENT(s) found in Text #2 (Reason #2). Introduce & cite your 1 piece of

support that illustrates an example of the Structural Element (stated). Transition and analyze

(what, why, how…). Transition, Restate common meaning between the 2 texts. Explain how

the 2 structures help reflect different or similar comments on author’s purposes/meaning.

Why are the different (or similar) structures in the texts crucial in building the meanings of

each text? What do we learn by comparing/contrasting both texts?

You need to compare and contrast both texts on a very specific level.

Find parallel or similar words, lines, images that are either illustrating similar ideas
or opposite/ contradictory ideas.

- need you to do at least 1 comparison on a very micro level (specific word, words,
line, image…).
