A REPORT ON 12 MEGAWATT BIOMASS BASED POWER PLANT

PROJECT AT BAGHAURA, PUNJAB, INDIA

INTRODUCTION

The main objective of this CDM project is to reduce greenhouse gas emission which is highly emitted by
the Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) as this is a fossil fuel dominated power plant. In this process
the Punjab Biomass Power Limited (PBPL) which is under the CDM project generate power from
biomass such as paddy straw which is a waste product and renewable source. This project is capable of
producing 12 MW of power by using 60 THP of biomass fired boiler and a 12 MW steam turbine
generator.
The power plant is situated in the village:- Baghaura district:- Patiala in Punjab. The plant is well
connected with rail and roads. Nearest railway station is Patiala and the nearest domestic airport is
Chandigarh. This power plant is well connected by rail and road. The nearest highway is NH 64.

BENEFITS OF PROJECT
The technology used in this project is cleaner than the conventional thermal power plant. In this project
controlled biomass based facility is made to generate steam which is utilized in generating power. This
project also contribute to the general wellbeing of local region and create sustainable development
policies in INDIA

Social well being:

Generation of employment for the rural segment of the society for collection, processing and supply
of the biomass (Paddy Straw).
Creation of jobs for operating the plant as well for various logistical activities for biomass material
sourcing, transportation, storage etc to the project plant from sources.
The project activity has helped in improving the social status of the local people in and around the
plant site as well as improved their professional skill which will be benefiting them in the long run.

Economic well being:

Employment generation in transport sector and also help in economic well being of the local farmers
by providing them additional income through sale of paddy straw which otherwise would have been
burnt in the field.
The project activity has also created business opportunities for local contractors, consultants and
suppliers. Therefore it has resulted in an overall change in the local economic structure.
Furthermore, the project activity, by catering to the country’s growing need for electricity, will also
help in an overall economical progress of the country.

Environmental well being:

In absence of the project activity, paddy straw would have been burnt by the farmers to clear the field
for the next cropping season. This uncontrolled burning of paddy straw creates air pollution in the
region. Further the fertility of the land also gets affected due to this uncontrolled fire of paddy straw.
Both of these negative environmental impacts will be avoided due to the project activity. GHG (CO2
emissions) emission is reduced by replacing equivalent amount of power that would otherwise have
been generated in the NEWNE grid which is fossil fuel dominated.

Technological well being:

The technology of use of biomass material for power generation is still in its infancy in the state of
Punjab. The success of the project will help in sharing of the technology to the other power producers
and will also promote the generation of green power in the region. Dissemination of this project will
improve technological scenario and thus contribute to technological growth related to the use of
biomass for power generation in the state of Punjab.
