K-14 initiative for College

February 17, 2015 Volume 31 Issue 7

By: Leah Carter

Staff Writer

Richard Forrester was iffy about this

year’s annual legislative rally in Olympia.
Forrester is an Edmonds Community
College student who works for student
government. On Thursday, Feb. 5 he at-
tended his first legislative rally. In his opin-
ion, it seemed like a disorganized, chaotic
endeavor.
“It sounded like community colleges
shouting about a bunch of random things,
like a list of complaints without real solu-
tions.”
But this year, he said, there was a rally
point: the K-14 initiative. A proposition to
receive more funds for higher education.
“We have direction,” he said. “Now
we have a solution.”
This year all 34 Washington commu-
nity colleges banded together on one main
issue, the K-14 initiative. Every year after
the rally, students from their school’s stu-
dent government meet to prepare a “white
paper” of all issues students would like to
bring to the table. The chosen topic from
last year’s white paper was the K-14 initia-
tive.

Smoking is soon to be a thing of the past

By: Andrea Perdomo
Staff Writer

As a smoker who has been trying to

quit I am always on the lookout for helpful
resources.
I ran across a flyer posted on one of
the bulletins here at school, “Time to Quit”
with a picture of a cigarette sitting in an
ashtray in place of the “Q” in “Quit”. Curi-
ous, I took a closer look and was intrigued
as to what this free program for students
could offer me in regards to quitting smok-
ing, so I decided to do a little research.
The programs project coordinator,
Matt Munson, with the Wellness Center
started a free support group for students
who are tobacco users looking to quit.
“Time to Quit” gets their material
from the American Cancer Society, a cer-
tified curriculum called “Freshstart”. The
“Time to Quit” program consists of four
weekly sessions, each lasting between 40
minutes to an hour in length.
Each session consists of a power point
presentation, work book material, group
talks, all of which are guided by a facilita-
tor. Topics often discussed consist of han-
dling urges, triggers, relapse, and the shar-
ing of progress or struggles.

The hyped movies that will be up for
Best Picture, arguably, the most important
category, seem to be ‘winner-worthy’ films.
In “American Sniper,” Bradley Coo-

to the Middle East, trained and ready to be-
come one of the best snipers in the field.
After hundreds of kills, he comes home
with obvious PTSD between his tours, and
has to deal with daily life and a haunting
past. Cooper reveals an intense and em-

Sabrina Tapp, who works at the AMC

clear winner. “American Sniper seems the

EdCC is going Smokeless soon

By: Alexander Jones
Staff Writer

There was once a day where you

could smoke in bars, hotels, restaurants,
just about anywhere you wanted to. Now,
imagine a smokeless initiative where there
are not even designated smoking zones
anymore.
That reality is not too far away be-
cause this is exactly what Edmonds Com-
munity College is trying to achieve.
Edmonds Community College is go-
ing smokeless, meaning the removal of
even designated smoking areas, and the
complete banning of smoking on campus
altogether.
Other public places have already
banned smoking, with the exception of a
few designated areas. It seems that EdCC
is lagging behind in joining the trend.
Health is becoming a larger issue ev-
ery day with the endless scares of various
new diseases and infections, aided by the
constant spreading and transfer of bacteria
from one person or thing to another.
This smokeless initiative would not
only provide a healthier environment and
image, it would also inadvertently help
students stop smoking, not to mention the
monetary benefit.

The bus system needs improvements

By Brendan Kurack
Staff Writer
The bus is a great way for public trans-
portation to get you to where you need to
go - until they can’t pick you up.
Over the past few years our transit sys-
tems have made huge cuts in their budget
which has caused them to cut some bus
routes and change others.
In my first year at the school I could
take one bus to get to the school which
picked me up only a few blocks from my
house.
However, now after all the cuts in
routes to save money there are only three
buses that go to the school. With fewer
buses going to the school you have more
students crammed into these small buses.
At times I haven’t even been able to get on
the bus at the transit center because the bus
got full so quick. Also, the students wait-
ing for a ride between the college and the

RecycleMania is still going strong, and the Green Team is kicking up its game
By: Lia Andrews
Guest Writer
This year in Recyclemania there’s
an all new campaign for you undergrads:
the 3R Action Challenge. The 3R Action
Challenge challenges students to support
Edmonds Community College by sharing
when you recycle, compost, reuse or re-
duce to generate points.
Each time you text, tweet or use the
myactions site or app, you’ll give EdCC a
bump in the ranking! That’s it. No track-
ing, measuring or weighing…just few texts
and hashtags and you’ve done a huge part.
The competition is broken into four
stages, each two weeks long and each with
its own theme: #Recycle, #Reuse, #Reduce
and #ZeroWaste running from February
1st-February 14th, February 15th-February
28th, March 1st-March 14th, and March
15th-March 28th respectively.
Text those hashtags in during their
timeframe and a winner for each stage will
be announced at the end. Remember—
there’s no limit to how many times you can
text, selfie, tweet (retweets count too!) so
go forth and share your recycling spirit as
much as possible!
You can sign up at myactions.org
and download the mobile app, follow the
Green Team twitter at twitter.com/green-
teamedcc, and text 21212 with the hashtags
#RM2015 and #ECC at any time during
the competition.
For the faculty and staff, don’t worry,
we haven’t forgotten you! The Green Team
is renewing our Adopt-A-Bin program.
Compost bins around campus are no-
toriously scarce, and the especially com-
mitted among us often have to travel to
different floors or even different buildings
to find one.
If you’re tired of throwing all those
food and paper scraps into the trash, you
can now obtain a compost bin for your
classroom, office space or break room
space from the Green Team.
When you adopt a bin, you will be
in charge of its upkeep. Facilities will not
have a part in its maintenance.
That means being knowledgeable
about what can and cannot be composted,
sorting, taking it out to the proper dump-
ing site on campus, and making sure it is
loaded with proper compostable bags.
If that all sounds a bit daunting, don’t
worry!

Sword fighting a popular pass time again

By: Todd M Clayton Jr

Long-sword fighting has been around

for many centuries, it is commonly called
‘The German Longsword Fighting Style.’
Over the last couple of years it has gained
in popularity with most live steel groups.
Live steel is where people get suited
up in some kind of heavy fencing gear or
armor and go about as if they were fencing.
But instead of foils people use real swords
that are blunted on the end and not sharp,
but the dangerous are they can still hurt.
People can see these at most fencing

The Super Bowl aftermath, 12th man still on top
By: Brooke Watson

After Seattle lost Super Bowl XLIX

24-28 to the New England Patriots many
12th man fans were left stunned by Seat-
tle’s decision in its last play.
With less than a minute left in the
game, at the one-yard line, the Seattle Se-
ahawks chose to throw the ball rather than
handing it off to Marshawn Lynch.
This fateful decision lead to an inter-
ception and crushed any hope for Seattle
to achieve back-to-back Super Bowl vic-
tories.
Lynch, who is known as “Beast Mode”
for his aggressive running style previously
had run 102-yards during the game, and
not giving him the ball in those final mo-
ments has left Seahawks fans and specta-
tors bewildered.
Many players questioned the last play
as well. Seattle linebacker Bruce Irvin was
quoted by NBC sports saying
“We had it. I don’t understand how
you don’t give it to the best back in the
league on not even the one-yard line. We
were on the half-yard line, and we throw
a slant. I don’t know what the offense has
going on, what they saw. I just don’t un-
derstand.”
However, Marshawn Lynch was actu-
