Nicole gave up her right to nobility by marrying Louis De La
Salle, a man outside of her class.

She married for love rather than for position or wealth and
security, which was the norm at that time.

It is little wonder that De La Salle gave up his wealth to pursue

higher ideals, though the wonderful example set by his mother.

De La Salle studied at the Sorbonne

St. Sulpice in Paris.

St. Sulpice was notable for a rigorous lifestyle and

intended to produce priests capable of self-sacrifice and
self-discipline.

Mindful of the needs of the poor,

a regular task of the seminarians was
to teach catechism to the poor.

Because of his love for his vocation to the

Spiritual Director - Fr. Nicolas Roland, by
enrolling immediately at the University of Reims,
taking the evening courses in theology to
complete the courses he took in Paris.

At the age of 28 John Baptist De La Salle was
settling gradually into the routine and the
lifestyle of a pious and zealous but rather
comfortable and respected young priest. He
was just ordained as a priest a year earlier.

However God has other plan…

It all started when he met Mr. Adrian Nyel

"God, who directs all things with wisdom and

and who does not force the will of men,

wishing to have me completely occupied with the care

involved me unexpectedly and in a short time,

In 1681, De La Salle
realized that he would have to

when it came to his priestly
responsibilities. Thus he quickly and
irrevocably joined his Brothers in real
poverty. Now, they would all be fully
dependent on God alone.

May 28, 1684 - John Baptist De La

solemn vow of obedience.

St. John Baptist De La

9/5/19 mgdm 39
Reflection #1
Complete dedication to one’s calling by God, whatever it may be, is a rare quality.

Jesus asks us to “love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind,
and with all your strength” (Mark 12:30b, emphasis added).

Paul gives similar advice: “Whatever you do, do from the heart…” (Colossians 3:23).

Reflection:
Write a statement which will manifest the summary of your relationship with your God so far. And,
in not more than five sentences, explain its meaning .
“I adore in all things the will of God in my regard.”
