LACK OF FACILITIES AND JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

ACADEMIC PERFORMANCES IN AGUISAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

I.I Background of the Study

The quality of education depends on school facilities and instructional

materials. It is the process of student learning. The quality of a schools’
environment and its facilities has a strong influence on student learning
besides regular use in organizing and managing school activities records of a
schools’ activities, records of a schools’ physical facilities and material
resources such as furniture and equipments can provide data to derive many
indicators for assessing the quality of education in a school. School facilities
can actually have a substantive impact on learning process. School facilities
can be defined as those things that enable the learning to learn effectively.
(bartley 2008)

Lack of school facilities can affect the students and their academic
performance. The teachers will be affected with it too. Teachers can’t teach
students well if they lack facilities or necessary things to use during teaching-
learning process.

We have observed in our school facilities that there are some non-working
or poorly maintained public comfort room, lack of classrooms, overcrowding in
classroom, poor ventilation, unsanitary, and crowded canteens. It shows that
condition of school facilities has an important impact on student performance
and teachers effectiveness. I single point, research explains that comfortable
classroom temperature and noise level are very important to efficient student
performance.

We wanted to delve deeper into the question of how will the government
solve this problem in every school in the Philippines especially in a rural
community. Government is the one who is responsible to give the needs of
every school but seems that government are blind of what is really happening
in a school.

In this situation, we the researchers planned to evaluate the school

facilities. We will conduct this research to know more about the school facilities
and the student performance status.

I.II Statement of the Problem

This study will determine the lack of school facilities and junior high
school students’ academic performance in Aguisan National High School.
Specifically, it sought to answer the following questions:

1. What is the demographic profile of the junior high students?

a. Age
b. Sex
c. Grade level
2. Why does school facilities are important?
3. How does school facilities help the students and in their academic
performances?

I.III Hypotheses

1. There is no significant difference between lack of school facilities and junior

high school students’ academic performances.

2. There is no significant relationship between lack of school facilities and

I.IV Theoretical Framework

The importance of school facilities has been highlighted by many

educational administrators and planners.

Lack of facilities have an adverse effect on the performance of students

in the less endowed schools, Professor Kwesi Andam, former Vice Chancellor of
the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has
stated. He noted that students of less endowed schools could therefore not
compete with other students in major public examinations, which determined
admission to universities and other tertiary institutions. Prof Andam made
these observations at the 35th Anniversary Speech and Prize-Giving Day of the
T I Ahmadiyya Senior High School at Gomoa Potsin in the Central Region at the
weekend.

According to Dewees in 1999. School facilities can be defined as those things

that enable the teacher to do his/her work very well and helping the learners to
learn effectively. School facilities are all the things that are needed for effective
teaching – learning process to take place. They are designed to enhance the
process of teaching. The challenge for educators was to renovate or design
buildings that provided the appropriate infrastructure for new learning
approaches, mode of instruction, as well as tools for technology that improved
teaching and learning.

I.VI Significance of the Study

The students. Students can benefit this study because they are the ones who
need to be informed with the problems of the school facilities. The lack of
school facilities can contribute the learning development of the students.

The teachers. Teachers are needed to be informed by concerning problems of

the school especially with the school facility problems.

The government. This study will help them to know that there is still schools
that is needed their help and to awake them that they have a responsibility to
do.

Future researcher. Future researcher can benefit this study because they can
get or gather more information in our study.

I.VII Scope and Limitation

This study focuses on the lack of school facilities and the academic
performances in junior high school students. The data collection will be
conducted to 5% of the total population of junior high school of Aguisan
National High School, school year 2018-2019 who will represent the
population. The study would be done through the questionnaire to the
students as survey and reference. Through this the researchers will be able to
know the effects of the lack of school facilities and can be resolved.

I.VIII Definition of Terms

In this study, the term school facilities is used to mean “school facilities have a
substantive impact on learning process.”
In this study, the term education is used to mean “education depends on
school facilities and instructional materials. It is the process of student
learning.”

In this study, the term Government is used to mean “Government is the one
who is responsible to give the needs of every school.”
