voice
SPECIFIC AIMS
 To analyze the functions of activates voice and passive
voice.
 Develop examples to understand the use of active voice
and passive voice.
 Understand the proper use of active voice and passive
voice, taking into account the different patterns that are
needed.
VOICE
Voice is a grammatical category that applies to verbs. Voice
in English expresses the relationship of the subject to the
action. Voice has two values.

 active: the subject does the action

 passive: the subject receives the action

ACTIVE VOICE

The active voice is the "normal" voice, the one that we use
most of the time. In the active voice, the object receives the
action of the verb.
I'll start with active voice because it's simpler. In an active
sentence, the subject is doing the action:
A straightforward example is the sentence "Steve loves
Amy." Steve is the subject, and he is doing the action: he
loves Amy, the object of the sentence.
Another example is the title of the Marvin Gaye song “I
Heard It through the Grapevine.” "I" is the subject, the one
who is doing the action. "I" is hearing "it," the object of the
sentence.
The active voice is:

 direct and specific

 uses fewer words - always a good thing
 dynamic

EXAMPLES

The man must have eaten five hamburgers

El hombre debe haber comido cinco hamburguesas
The man (subject) is doing the eating (verb)
El hombre está haciendo de comer

 Julia sweeps the Street.

Julia barre la calle.

 The dog bit the mailman.

El perro mordió al cartero
 Fernando listens the radio.
Fernando escucha la radio.

 Ángel walks around the street.

Ángel se pasea por la calle
PASSIVE VOICE
the passive form is used when you want to have more emphasis
on action and not on who performs it. in this way the object
becomes the subject and the verb goes past participle.

Although the passive voice is less common than the active voice,
there are several good reasons to sometimes use the passive. On this
page we look at how to construct the passive voice and when and
why to use it. (For a basic explanation of the difference between
active and passive, please see voice.)

EXAMPLES

 The book was written by William Shakespeare.

El libro fue escrito por William Shakespeare .

 The university was built in 1985.

La universidad fue construida en 1985

 The Street is swept by julia

La calle es barrida por julia.

 This work ust be finised in Monday.

Este trabajo debe ser realizado el lunes.
CONCLUSION

Forms of active voice and passivated voice has great influence for
speech and comprehension of sentences in English, sentences in the
active form highlights the pronoun or agent who makes a choice, and
the passivated foma is more important action that It makes the agent
who performs it. better understand these ways it allows
comprehension and fluency when talking in English.
