MY INTERVIEW EXPERIENCE

1. BPCL
DATE OF INTERVIEW – 24-04-2017
VENUE – NOIDA
CUT OFF – Called upto rank 1100 approximately
CTC OFFERED -14.05 LAKHS
Interview was divided into 3 stage process
a. Group discussion ( case study)
b. Technical interview
c. HR interview
They called around 120 candidates , personally I feel BPCL selection process is the most
difficult one to crack as each round is eliminating . Whole process took 2 days
Group discussion – We were divided into the groups with each group consisting of 16 members
, They select 4 to 5 students from each group, so in 1 hour itself around 80 students were
rejected and 40 were left for the next round of technical interview.
Technical interview – 40 students were sent for technical interview which was conducted by
two panels , each handling 20 students , out of 40 students total of 20 students were to be
selected for the next round ie HR interview to be conducted next day. Panel consisted of 5
members .Questions asked in technical interview were
1. Introduction – This is the point where you can give direction to your interview , I know
few guys whose whole technical interview was based on the project they did during
final year and they even got selected so this one,s is one of the important part.
2. What is gear ratio, what types of gears are used in differential
3. How does turboprop engine works
4. What is cavitation in pump , how will you overcome that.
5. One question from manometry .
6. What is poisson,s ratio.
7. Difference between stress and pressure
8. What is purging in Boilers.
As you can see, questions were pretty simple and they covered entire basics from syllabus .
Technical interview was pretty chill for the next round out of 40 . 20 students were selected for
the Final HR round
HR Interview – Although i did not got selected i missed Selection in HR round but i will love
to share my experience and mistakes done by me
Q1 INTRODUCE YOURSELF. - Prepare a good introduction highlighting your
achievements it decides the course of your interview
Q2 since i was part of SAE baja team of my college and unluckily for me BPCL is one of the
sponsers for the event they started asking questions about fuels , they asked about SPEED
petrol and HI SPEED DIESEL and difference from normal petrol made by bpcl. i knew only
the basics of this didn,t knew regarding additives used in hi speed petrol i couldn,t answer
that properly
Q3 They asked me about the volkswagen scam which was in news last year , i explained that
properly.
Q4 they were still in BAJA EVENT and next asked about why is lubricants used in my car i
explained that properly , next they asked about what is difference between lubricants made by
castrol and BPCL , this question punctured my confidence :p i couldn,t gave this answer
and flow of interview was totally broken
Q5 Why bpcl ? why not iocl , for this question whatever answer you will give they won,t be
convinced although i tried to answer this through the profit per employee of bpcl , growth,
and more competitive work culture , they seemed to be convinced but not completely
Q6 why govt . \why not private
Q7 why you didn,t join in automobile firm since you have good knowledge about cars ?
Again same thing it was very difficult to convince them regarding this
These were the questions i remembered there were numerous other which came during
counter questions bythem .
Overall it was a kind of stress interview they see that a candidate should not lose his
confidence or change his stance in pressure situation this is what is felt .
I started losing my confidence after that lubricant question which finally hampered my
chances of selection
Overall HR interview was tough and confidence was the key for this interview.
Finally they selected 8 members out of final 20 members called for HR interview , so this
was all about interview with BPCL , my next interview was scheduled in Bengaluru for
BEML

2. BEML
VENUE – Bengaluru
Date – 08-05-2017
Cut off – Around 400 rank
Since BEML was recruiting first time from Gate nobody had idea on how interviews would be
conducted and about the selection process of the company.
Process consisted of only 1 technical interview that too lasted on an average of 5-7 minutes per
candidate
1. Introduce yourself
2. Tell us about your BAJA project
And discussion went about my project for about 5 minutes in which I explained him each
and everything properly and most important confidently.
Verdict – Selected .

3. IOCL
DATE OF INTERVIEW – 30-05-2017
VENUE – KOLKATA
CUT OFF marks 71.8 approx 1500 rank
Around 30 people were called on each day of interview , consisted of two rounds
1. Technical + HR interview
2. Group discussion and group task
Gate score weightage 85% , interview 10 marks , GD and GT 5 marks
1. TECHNICAL INTERVIEW
1. Why did you choose mechanical engineering ?
2. As a mechanical engineer how will you contribute to iocl?
3. What are the industries which uses fuel of iocl?
4. What kind of fuel is given in aviation industry?
5. What kind of fuel does powerplant take from iocl?
6. How will you troubleshoot the problem if pump is not giving you the required head?
7.You are given an air compressor which compresses hydrogen will it be able to compress
hydrogen?
8. What is seamless pipes ? Where it is used in iocl?
9. How GI pipes are produced what are its application
10.What is mean by forged component , which types of pipes are produced by extrusion?
11. How will you use the knowledge of operations research in iocl?
12. Suppose you are posted in marketing division how will you make sure that everything is in
schedule using the concepts of operations research ?
13. Some questions from industrial training and my BAJA project?
As you can see this interview was unpredictable and a difficult one , Overall interview went
for 40 minutes , it was a kind of stress interview for me as interviewer was a bit rude guy .So
overall iocl interview depends upon your luck , because the next person interviewed after me
was only for 5 minutes duration .
Next round was GD and GT . The topics were
1.Should there be allocation of funds in education and military purposes?
2. You are a part of board of directors of a company how will you ensure that there is improved
efficiency of workers , devise a plan
Overall GD and GT are chill if you are able to think analytically and have some basic
knowledge of what is going around the world , Language does matter , IF YOU CAN SPEAK
ENGLISH IT IS ALWAYS BETTER , because unfortunately English is still considerd classy
in our country =D when compared to hindi or any other language .

My next interview was for ONGC

4. ONGC
Venue – NEW DELHI
DATE – 05-06-2017
ONGC had good number of vacancies this time , since my rank was little bad I opted for
cementing department since in that only I had good chances of selection , ONGC and IOCL
always gives preference to toppers as they have good amount of weightage for GATE Score
The breakup of scores were
1. 60% gate score weightage
2. 20% btech marks ( They give 20 to everyone)
3. 3% Mtech degree ( Final year mtech were not given this marks)
4. 2% PHD holders
5. 15% Inteview
There was only 1 technical interview
1. Name and formal introduction
2. Tell me what do you know about cementing
3. Family background
4. Types of engine
5.why compression ratio is high in diesel engine
6. Types of shafts in diesel engine
7. Why do we need gear boxes in car
8. Difference between 1st and overdrive gear ratio in cars
9. Why milage of Diesel engine are high?
10. 5 things about Jharkhand.
As you can see from the interview that this one is a pretty simple interview , it was one of the
easiest interview I faced , my interview went around for 10 minutes. Overall panel was really
friendly and lively . If you have good gate score your chances for selection in ONGC is really
high

5. BARC
VENUE – MUMBAI
DATE OF INTERVIEW -7-06-2017
Now this interview is BAAP of all interview , if you want to know where do you stand in terms
of your technical knowledge you should definitely try this interview
CUT OFF MARKS – GATE SOCRE 824 , Online exam -98.02 percentile ( AROUND 117
MARKS)
The questions asked are as follows ,They will ask your 5 or 4 favourite subjects first , then they
will proceed further my interview went for 1.5 hrs so you can imagine in what kind of situation
I was =D
1. A infinite vertical piston and cylinder was given with air on both sides such that piston is
supported by a support ,now you suddenly remove the support such that piston expands due to
its self weight, will the piston stop if yes after how much distance will it stop ,draw pv diagram
and temperature variation along the length of the piston
2. How will you transfer heat from lower temperature to higher temperature without using
compressor or any other devices which runs on electricity give me a green method suitable for
environment
3. Why does ship float in water if the density of the material of ship is more than the water .
4. Why does ship flow above water and submarines flow inside water
5. Two Bodies are at same temperature one of aluminum and other plastic which will have
more energy ,how will you transfer that energy from higher to lower
6. Graph of developing flow in laminar flow , which will have more hydrodynamic entrance
length turbulent flow or laminar flow
7.5 kg of ice is mixed at -20 with 5kg of water at 20 find the equilibrium temperature
8. Draw the temperature profile for heat transfer due to convection and radiation combined .
More graphical questions were there for finding stresses in thin cylinder
Panel will give you enough time to think and react all you have to do is to be confident and try
to answer everything , They will DIG you deep into the concepts of every subjects you mention
there , but this interview is worth an experience The final selection ratio is not good in barc as
they called around 750 students for interview out of which only 35 candidates were finally
selected

6. NTPC
VENUE – NOIDA
DATE -15-06-2017
CUT OFF 280 RANK ( I was the last candidate to be called)
NTPC selection process was further divided into 3 parts
1. Online aptitude test
2. Group discussion
3. Technical round
Online aptitude test was taken on the first day itself it was only qualifying in nature , cut off
marks for general was 40% of total marks ie 48 marks out of 120 marks. It looks easy to score
48 marks in 120 minutes but questions were random and you need to have good aptitude to
clear this one , I myself got 50.25 marks and highest marks on my day was 59 marks and around
10 students were rejected in the first day itself
Students who qualified ONLINE TEST were called for interview and GD . The final breakup
for selection process was
1. 85% gate marks
2. 5% GD
3. 10% interview

Interview questions are as follows
I was the last candidate to be interviewed so initially they tried to calm me and were cursing
management for making me wait so long from 8 in morning
2. General questions about family , why didn't you get placed during college placements since
you come from a good college
3. What is fluid coupling
4. Where fluid coupling is to be used and where conventional coupling is to be used
5. Difference between pump and turbine
6. Does pump necessarily increase temperature also of the fluid
7. Critical point of water ,they asked for values I didn't knew values
8.Triple point of water , values and its significance
9. Few numerical questions on Gibbs phase rule. Why you use 2 at the end of formulae P+ F =
C +2 , where do you use 1 and why
10. What is pure substance.
11. Then questions on project which went for 10 minutes
Overall interview went for 20 minutes , panel was a bit rude for ntpc , ALTHOUGH THEY
GIVE 85 % WEIGHTAGE TO THE GATE SCORE BUT THIS DOESN,T GURANTEE
SELECTION TO THE TOP RANKERS AS THEY DISQUALIFY MANY STUDENTS
DURING INTERVIEW( you have to get minimum 4 in interview to be considerd for selection)

7. HPCL
VENUE – KOLKATA
DATE – 23-06-2017
CUT OFF MARKS -78.9 marks around 450 rank
SELECTION PROCEDURE
1. GT ( it is eliminating for HPCL)
2. INTERVIEW ( purely HR interview)
GT TOPIC
Some condition was given , we have to select the best solution for that condition using team
work
35 students appeared for GT and almost 20 were selected for the final interview
INTERVIEW
1. Basic introduction
2. Why PSU why not private?
3. Why not iocl what is so special in HPCL?
4. Questions on project?
5. Strengths and weakness , good amount of time was given on this
6. Questions on industrial training what things you have learned from it
7.What qualities should a leader have?
8. What can HPCL get from you?
Interview went for about 20 minutes , it was an easy one if you have properly prepared for HR
part , Training and projects become really crucial if you are appearing for this kind of interview
