LABORATORY MANUAL 11

Frequency Deviation Step Response of an Isolated Power System without

Controller

Reading Material: Topic 12.2-12.3, Chapter 12: “Power System Control”, Book: “Power
System Analysis by Hadi Sadaat”.

Software Required: MATLAB

In this lab session, we’ll develop models for generator, load, prime mover and governor in
MATLAB Simulink. Then we’ll analyze the frequency deviation step response of the developed
uncompensated system.

Task 1:

Write your Registration Number in the following block and list down the values of
variables and . The problem statement includes data in square brackets [] for
Registration Number 2013-EE-004 as an example

Registration Number: .

An isolated power station has the following parameters. Each parenthesis indicate one digit
after decimal

Turbine time constant ( ) [e.g., 0.5] .

Governor time constant ( )( ) [e.g., 0.51] .

Governor inertia constant [e.g., 4] = .

Governor speed regulation

Task-1

The load varies by ( ) [e.g., 1.5] percent for a 1 percent change in frequency.

a) Find out the value of D according to your registration number and the above given
statement:
D

b) Use the Routh-Hurwitz array to find the range of R for control system stability. Perform
manual calculations in the space shown below:
Range of R

c) After obtaining the characteristic equation, use MATLAB rlocus function to obtain the
root-locus plot. Attach the printout of the plot in the space shown below:
Root Locus Plot
Task-2

The governor speed regulation is set to [e.g., 0.04] per unit. The turbine rated output is
200 MW at nominal frequency of 60 Hz. A sudden load change of 50 MW occurs

d) Obtain the time-domain performance specifications and frequency deviation step

response. Attach the printout of the plot in the space shown below:
Frequency Deviation Step Response Plot using commands

Time Domain Performance Specifications

e) Construct the Simulink Block Diagram using the following steps:

1. Enter the command window of the MATLAB.
2. Create a new Model by selecting File → New → Model.
3. Pick up the blocks from the Simulink library browser and form a block diagram.
4. After forming the block diagram, save the block diagram.
5. Double click the scope and view the result.
6. Compare the frequency deviation step response obtained with part d)
