1201 GENERAL
1201.1 Definitions
(d) Live loads means all loads other than dead loads,
wind loads and earthquake loads.
(b) All buildings and structures and all parts thereof shall
be designed and constructed to be of sufficient
strength to support the estimated or actual imposed
dead, live, wind and any other loads both during
construction and after completion of the structure,
(d) In designing floors, not less than the actual live load
to be imposed shall be used in the design. Special
provision shall be made for machine or apparatus
loads. Consideration should be given in the design of
living rooms where crowded conditions are likely to
occur during parties and dances.
USE Horizontal
Load
lb/ft run
Light access stairs, gangways and the like not more than 15
2 ft. wide
Light access stairs, gangways and the like more than 2 ft. 40 plus
wide, stairways, landings and balconies concentrated
load of 60 lbs
All other stairways, landings and balconies and all para- 40 to 60 (exits
pets and handrails to roofs and stairs)
Grandstands and stadia 250
(c) In order to take into account climate change, all of the wind
speeds listed in 1202.2 (a) and (b) shall be increased by
factors of:
(i) 1.13 for most buildings or for Category II Buildings
when using ASCE 7 (= factor of 1.28 for pressures)
(ii) 1.10 for critical facilities or for Category III and IV
Buildings when using ASCE 7 (= factor of 1.21 for
pressures)

use of the space for other purposes is impossible.

Table 12-4
Type and duration of load- Wind storm of several hour's Transient cyclic loads of at most a
ing. duration; loads fluctuate, but pre- few minutes' duration; loads
dominantly in one direction change direction repeatedly
Predictablity of loads Usually good, by extrapolation from Poor; little statistical certainty of
records or by analysis of site and magnitude of vibrations or their
wind patterns effects
Main factors affecting build- External shape and size of Response governed by building
ing response building; dynamic properties dynamic properties: fundamental
unimportant except for very period, damping and mass
slender structures
Normal design basis for Elastic response required Inelastic response Permitted, but
maximum credible event ductility must be provided; design is
for small fraction of the loads corre-
sponding to elastic response
Design of non-structural Loading confined to external Entire building contents shaken and
elements cladding must be designed appropriately
