related vocabulary. S-S
S-SS
This activity targets SS’ ability to talk about their preferences
regarding different housing options. This will be implemented by:
1. showing them images of different type of houses (projected
on the PowerPoint slide)
2. asking them to describe the image(s)
3. asking them which housing arrangement they prefer

Structure: T-SS
- show images extracted from the magazine Traditional Home S-SS
(authentic material) S-S + S-SS

- ask SS to describe the images T-S + S-S

- ask SS to choose the image they prefer ~ pair/group work 
share with the class
- ask SS why they chose that image
- collect SS answers and write them on the board
- recast/reformulate some SS answers using “would rather”

* Ask SS questions about their own preferences. Follow up with S-SS
why questions.

o Post-stage:  SS practice the structure “would rather” to

express preferences
This stage targets SS’ ability to spontaneously talk about their T-SS
preferences using the structure ‘would rather’. This will be practiced
through a fluency line.
- SS will talk in pairs and answer questions using the structure
“I would rather” T-S
- SS will ask follow-up questions to each other

Structure: T-SS
- give SS instructions about the exercise: Now, we will do some
oral practice with this expression. You will work in pairs. We
will do two lines, that way, you can talk to a few people. How

are you going to do this? I will ask you all a question and
then you will have to answer it for your partner using the S-SS
structure ‘I would rather’. T-SS
- model with the help of a student: Let me give you an example.
X, can you practice with me? The question is: ‘Do you prefer
sunny bedrooms or dark bedrooms?’ How can you answer, X, S-S
using ‘I would rather’? S-SS
- tell SS that they should ask follow-up questions as well: But
we’re not going to just say one sentence, okay. So, after your
partner replies, ask them a follow-up question, yes? Let’s see
what some follow-up questions can be. X, so you said: ‘I
would rather live in a dark bedroom’. (to the class) What are
some follow-up questions we can ask?
- collect SS answers about possible follow-up questions
- tell SS to get up and form two lines: Okay, great. Now, all of
you get up. Let’s form two lines here. Remember, we’re
practicing talking about preferences. Make sure both of you
have a chance to speak.
- SS practice
- SS report back

* Questions to be projected on the slides for the SS during the

fluency line:
- Do you prefer living in an apartment or a house?
- Would you rather have a more modern house or a more traditional
house?
- Do you prefer living by yourself/with your family or with
roommates?
- Would you rather live near the mountains or the sea?

presentation)
Gabriela Constantin-Dureci Fall 2019

Each student will get assigned a type of housing from around the

the first draft (lesson 16), which will be returned with
feedback (lesson 17). Then, they will submit a re-write
of their initial text incorporating the feedback (lesson
18). Finally, they will prepare an oral presentation
(lesson 19).
