MC 30 Product Data Sheet

Cutback Bitumen 2008/1

DESCRIPTION
MC 30 is a blend of medium curing petroleum cutter and penetration grade bitumen.

USES
MC 30 is used for priming newly constructed crushed stone or natural gravel base courses prior to surfacing.

PROPERTIES
MC 30 is blended to a low viscosity to ensure that it penetrates the top 10 mm of the base with the aid of the cutter whilst
depositing a film of bitumen on the surface to provide adhesion between the base course and the new surfacing.

SPECIFICATIONS
MC 30 conforms to SABS 308 specification for cutback bitumen.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

1. Although MC 30 is pumpable at ambient temperature it must be heated for spray application.
2. Special care must be taken whilst heating as MC 30 contains flammable cutters which have a
flash point of > 40 °C.
3. Before priming, the surface of the base should be well broomed.
4. The moisture content of the base should be less than 50% of the Optimum Moisture Content.
5. If the base is very dry, dampen slightly with water to prevent “fish eye” formation of the prime layer.
6. Apply with a calibrated distributor at a binder spray temperature of 55 °C and a minimum road surface
temperature of 10 °C.
7. Drying time will depend on the porosity of the base and weather conditions. The prime must be allowed to dry
before opening to traffic or proceeding with the construction of the surfacing.

3. Hazards Identification and First-aid Measures

Effects of over-exposure: Prolonged exposure to solvent/bitumen fumes can lead to
nausea and irritation to skin, eyes and upper respiratory tract.

4. First-aid Measures
Eye contact: Rinse eyes with cold water for 10 minutes and seek medical attention. If
irritation persists, obtain immediate medical attention.
Skin contact: Wipe the product from the skin and remove with an industrial hand cleaner.
Rinse with clean water.
Inhalation: Remove victim to fresh air. Apply artificial respiration and seek medical
assistance if breathing stops and/or remains difficult.
Ingestion: Do not induce vomiting. Protect airways if vomiting starts. Seek medical
assistance if rapid recovery does not occur.

5. Fire-fighting Measures
MC 30 is handled above its flash point and the vapour space above the product is often in
the explosive range.
Evacuate the area of all non-essential personnel and members of public.
Wear appropriate protective clothing
Fire-fighting agents: Dry Chemical Powder, Carbon Dioxide, Foam, Inert Gas
Extinguishers.
Inform the local Fire Brigade and Local Police Department.
Supplier: Colas South Africa (Pty) Ltd.
Emergency Telephone Number: 021 531 6406

6. Accidental Release Measures

Procedures if material is released or spilled:
Evacuate area of non-essential personnel and members of public.
Prevent spilled material from entering drains, ditches or rivers.
Shut off leaks and remove ignition sources.
Ventilate contaminated areas.
Protective clothing should be worn.
For large spills: Contain material and pump back to holding tank for later disposal.
For smaller spills: Use sand and spill-control material to contain and/or absorb spills.
Waste disposal methods: Dispose of waste at an appropriate waste disposal facility in
accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
Inform local Fire Brigade, Police Department and the Department of Water Affairs.

7. Hazchem labeling
UN 1999, flammable liquid.

8. Exposure Control/Personal Protection

Respiratory protection: If fume exposure is likely to exceed occupational standard limits,
respirators should be worn.
Ventilation: Adequate ventilation should be provided to prevent build-up of fumes that
could be explosive. Avoid breathing solvent/bitumen fumes.
Eye protection: Chemical type goggles and face shield should be worn when contact may
occur.
Skin protection: Use chemical-resistant apron, heat-resistant gloves and heat-resistant
close-fitting safety boots (non-sparking soles) to avoid skin contact.

9. Stability and Reactivity Data

Stability: (thermal, light, etc.) Stable at ambient temperature.
Conditions to avoid: Extreme heat.
Incompatibility: Strong oxidisers.
Hazardous Decomposition Products: Thermal decomposition can produce a variety of
compounds. Incomplete combustion will generate smoke and hazardous gases, including
carbon monoxide.

10. Handling and Storage

Do not heat in closed drums under any circumstances.
