CHAPTER 1

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY AND ITS PROBLEM

Rationale

Our country is alingned in the wide railroad of modernization. One of the concrete

evidences is the urbanization, proven by the luxurious buildings, tunnels, dams, brigdes,

water system and roads. However, overall development outcomes over the last decades

have fallen short of potential. Infrastructure development in the country is hampered by a

poor business environment, weaknesses in planning, coordination, and finacing and a

decrease in private sector involvement in infrastructure provision. This conflict resulted a

number of cases of failed projects in public and private sectors. It is a dillema to our

Engineers who are responsible to the planning, design and maintaince of safetiness of an

project. The enhancement of disaster management and construction site safetiness is within

their hands. They have the decision of choosing quality materials and equipments to be

used in projects. So, as much as possible engineers assures and secures everything before

the project where about to start.

In addition, Civil Engineering is a four year course ( IDEFINE MO CIVIL

ENGINEERING COURSE). It is listed in a rank of In demand Jobs in and out of the

country. According to U.S. Bereau of Labor Statistics , the employment of civil engineers

is projected to grow 20 % from 2012 to 2020.

This study aimed to determine the level of perception of civil engineering students

towards their difficult and easiest major subjects.

Statement of the Problem

Generally, this study aimed to determine the level of perception of Civil

Engineering students towards their difficult and easiest major subject

Specifically, this study seek to answer to the following questions:

1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of:

a. Gender and ;

b. Age?

2. What is the level of perception of civil engineering students in terms of their

gender?

3. What is the level of perception of civil engineering students in each semester per

year?

4. What is the overall level of perception of the civil engineering students?

Significance of the study

This study is important in the following:

Readers. This study gives information to the readers about the said topic.

Future researchers. This study will help the future researchers as a related study on

their future research.

Students. This study will help the students to identify the subject they need to prepare

for.

Scope and Delimitations

The study was conducted to determine the level of perception of the students

towards difiicult and easiest major subjects of the students of civil engineering.

The gathered data was conducted at Pangasinan State University – Urdaneta

campus, Urdaneta City. This study is delimited among 5th year civil engineering students,

because they can provide all the needed data. Any variable that has no relevance in this

study was delimited and not covered.

Definition of Terms

Terms used in the study are herein defined for clarity:

Civil Engineering. It refers to the 5-year course that the researchers will be utilized.

Major subjects. It refers to the specialized subject of the students under civil engineering.

Perception. It refers to the understanding of the respondents towards to the level of

difficulty or their major subjects.

Respondent. Refers to the civil engineering students of PSU Urdaneta campus, Urdaneta

City that was utilized as the respondents in determining the level of perception.

METHODOLOGY

Research Design

The research design used in this study was executed for the satisfaction of the

assessment for the needed data for this study. In particular, the study employed a

descriptive type of survey to gather the data by the research subject.

Research Subject

The respondent in the study are the regular (29) Fifth Year students of Pangasinan

State University – Urdaneta Campus, Urdaneta City, Pangasinan, under the Civil

Engineering course.

Research Instrument

The researchers administered a questionnaire to the students for the collection of

the needed information for this study, particularly, the perceived level of difficulty in their

major subjects.

The questionnaire was outline into two parts: (1) the profile of the respondents and;

(2) the level of difficulty of the Fifth Year Civil Engineering students in their major

subjects

The researchers used the five point likert scale in determining the level of

difficulty.

Statistical Treatment of Data

4
San Jacinto National High School

Tabulation of the gathered response will be recorded and analyse using different

statistical treatment. The used formulas are the following below:

1. Frequency Count

2. Percentage

Formula:
𝑁
P= × 100%
𝑛

P = Percentage

N = Total of sub-group

N = Total respondents

3. Average Weighted Mean

∑x
AWM =
n

n = Population of the Special Science Class Students

x = Number of score

AWM = Average Weighted Mean

w = Weight of each component

The summation of x should be divided to the total number of the respondents.

Likert Scale

Scale Rank Descriptive Equivalent

1.00-1.80 Very Easy (VE)

1.81-2.60 Easy (E)

2.61-3.40 Moderately Difficult (MA)

3.41-4.20 Difficult (D)

4.21-5.00 Very Difficult (VD)

The eight point Likert Scale determined the level of difficulty as perceived by the

students in their major subjects.

Total 29 100

Table 3.1 shown that 72% of the respondents are aged 21-23 year old. While 21%

of the respondents are aged 18-20 and 7% are 23 years old above.

Table 3.2
Gender of the respondents

Gender Frequency Percentage (%)

Male 15 52

Female 14 48

Total 29 7

Table 3.2 presents that 52% of the respondents are male while 48% is Female. This

means that the respondents are male-dominated consisting of 15 males out of 29

RESULTS AND FINDINGS

1. The respondents are male-dominated which composed of 15 male and 14 females.

2. Most of the respondents are aged 21-23 years old.

3. There is no difference between the males and the females as they perceived the

level of difficulty of their major subjects. All of the respondents perceived theor

major subjects as moderately difficult.

4. The respondents found their major subjects in first semester of Third year as easy.

While, it was concluded that some major subject took first to fifth year perceived as

moderately difficult.

5. The respondents perceived their major subjects from 1sty to fifth year as

moderately difficult.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Based on the conclusion the researchers would recommend the following:

1. It is good to be oriented and ready about this course before taking up.

2. The future researchers may use another variables in order to widen the content of

the present study.

3. The future researcher may use another research instrumental in gathering data.

4. Lastly, Future researchers may use this present study as a basis for the future study.
