1.0 SCOPE
This specification covers the minimum requirements for the design, materials, manufacturing
and inspection/testing of vertical and horizontal, AC induction motors for driven equipment.
These motors are categorized as:
Category A Fractional and Integral horsepower Squirrel Cage Induction Motors less than
250 HP (186 kW) and NEMA Frame motors, for general purpose duty.
Category B Squirrel Cage Induction Motors from 250 HP (186 kW) and less than 1000 HP
(746 kW) and running at speeds 3600 rpm or less, for general purpose duty.
Category C Squirrel Cage Induction Motors 1000 HP (746 kW) and larger, running at
speeds greater than 1800 rpm, for general purpose duty.
Category D Form wound Squirrel Cage AC Induction Motors 1000 HP (746 kW) and larger
for Special purpose critical service duty.

2.0 SELLER RESPONSIBILITY


2.1 General
2.1.1 Seller shall not make assumptions to replace information not furnished by
Buyer, in such cases Seller shall obtain the necessary information from the
Buyer or other reliable sources. Claims resulting from the lack of
knowledge by the Seller shall not be acceptable.
2.1.2 Seller shall submit a list of all appliances, special tools and accessories that
are necessary for the proper installation, operation and maintenance of this
equipment.
2.1.3 Seller shall list and fully describe all deviations from this specification and
the related codes.
2.1.4 Seller may list as an option, equipment or accessories that deviate from the
specifications but result in substantial savings to the Buyer. Such options
shall be listed separately in the Seller's proposal.
2.2 Conflicting Requirements
2.2.1 In case of conflict between the requirements of this specification and the
requisition package, the following order of precedence shall apply. The
absence of the specifications or documents will not constitute a conflict.
 Requisition package (data sheets and supplemental instructions)
 This Specification.
 Other Referenced Industry Codes and Standards
2.2.2 Any conflicts between the requirements of this specification and the related
codes, standards, data sheets, drawings, requisition, etc., shall be referred
in writing to the Buyer for clarification/resolution.

3.0 REGULATIONS
The following documents, including applicable addenda, constitute a part of this specification as
described herein. The referenced edition of these documents shall be that which is in effect as
of the issue date of this specification.
3.1 Codes

4.0 DESIGN
Minimum design requirements of motors are tabulated in Table 1 for easy reference, however,
the requisition package or the motor data sheets may impose some additional requirements. In
case of conflicts, the order of precedence as per Section 2.2 shall govern.
4.1 Alternate Designs
Alternate designs, including equivalent metric dimensions, fasteners, flanges,
materials, etc., require Buyer's specific approval.
4.2 Service Conditions
4.2.1 Motors shall be suitable for intermittent or continuous duty, for indoors or
outdoors, and for service in industrial plants, chemical & petrochemical
complexes or oil and gas installations as specified on the data sheets.
4.2.2 Motors shall be designed for 3300 ft (1006 m) and lower altitude, unless
otherwise specified in the requisition package.
4.3 Electrical Requirements
4.3.1 When specified on the motor data sheet, reduced voltage starting
capability will be provided.

4.3.2 Voltage, frequency, phase, etc. and other general requirements for different
size motors are given in Table 1 of this specification. Specific requirements
such as torque, multi-speed, reversing/nonreversing, etc. requirements
shall be given by the driven equipment manufacturer.
4.3.3 Motors shall be designed to operate at full load with supply voltage within
plus or minus ten (10) percent and the frequency within plus or minus five
(5) percent, of the rated voltage and frequency.
4.4 Performance
4.4.1 Design and Performance requirements of the Category-A and Category-B
motors shall, as a minimum, be determined by the latest revisions of NEMA
MG 1.
4.4.2 Design and Performance requirements of the Category-C motors shall, as a
minimum, be determined by the requirements of API-541, 3rd edition.
Aluminum rotor cage indicated in par. 2.4.5.2.2 of API-541, 3rd edition, is
acceptable for Category-C motors.
4.4.3 Design and Performance requirements of the Category-D motors shall, as a
minimum, be determined by the requirements of API-541, 3rd edition, with
special consideration of the bulleted items.
4.5 Insulation
4.5.1 Unless otherwise noted in the requisition package minimum requirements
for the insulation class for motors shall be in accordance with Table 1.
4.5.2 Motor insulation shall, as a minimum, be nonhygroscopic.
4.6 Service Factor
4.6.1 All NEMA frame size motors shall have a minimum of 1.15 service factor.
Unless otherwise specified, all other motors shall have 1.0 service factor.
4.6.2 Driven equipment Seller shall rate the drivers in accordance with the
applicable specifications. Motor service factor shall not be used in the
motor rating.
4.7 Enclosure
4.7.1 If not specified in the requisition package or the motor data sheets, motor
enclosures shall be selected per Table-2 of this specification.
4.7.2 Totally enclosed motors shall be provided with a moisture trap, drain or
other anti-condensation device. Motor casing shall be self draining.
4.7.3 Weatherproof motors shall be equipped with stainless steel filters and 1/2
in. (13 mm) mesh stainless steel screens.
4.8 Tropical Protection
Anti-fungus moisture resistant tropical protection shall be provided for all motors in the
coastal, tropical or high humidity locations. This requirement also applies to the
motors installed in excessively damp areas, such as cooling towers, sumps, etc.
4.9 Terminal Boxes

4.9.1 Motor terminal boxes shall be cast iron or steel or as designated on data
sheets, suitably arranged for conduit connection of threaded pipe tap size
(ANSI B1.1, unified inch screw thread). For NEMA frame size motors
standard conduit entrance will be furnished. For motors 250 HP (190 kW)
and above, the minimum conduit box entrance is four inches (102 mm).
4.9.2 Terminal box is to be located to the right hand side, when viewed from the
non-drive end. Conduit box shall be preferably rotatable, and positioned
near the horizontal centerline.
4.9.3 Cable termination shall be clearly and permanently marked. Terminal box
shall be furnished with solderless type cable connectors for incoming cable,
and one clamp connector for grounding.
4.9.4 Cable passage through motor frame to terminal box shall be completely
sealed to prevent moisture and dirt from getting inside the motor.
4.9.5 Motor leads shall be nonwicking, nonhygroscopic and shall have insulation
class equal to or better than the motor windings.
4.9.6 For motors other than explosion proof, the mating joint of the terminal box
and its cover shall be machined and provided with gaskets.
4.9.10 Separate terminal boxes shall be provided for the space heater leads,
winding temperature detectors and bearing temperature detectors.
4.9.11 As a minimum, Category-D motors shall have terminal boxes with drains,
breathers and adequate space for termination of shielded cables.
4.10 Bearings and Lubrication
4.10.1 Minimum requirements for the bearing types and the lubrication
requirements are shown in Table 1 of the specification. The requisition
package and the motor data sheets may impose additional project
requirements.
4.10.2 Ball and roller bearings shall preferably be grease lubricated and of a
reputable manufacturer for easy interchangeability. These bearings shall
have a minimum of 40,000 hours L-10 life rating.
4.10.3 Sleeve bearings shall be self aligning type with ring oil lubrication. If ring oil
lubrication is not sufficient the motor may be fitted with a shaft driven oil
pump. Method of lubrication shall be subject to Buyer's approval.
4.10.4 If the driven equipment for vertical motors does not have a thrust bearing
then the motors shall be designed to carry the maximum thrust in both
directions. Maximum allowable motor thrust shall be stated on the data
sheets. Oil lubrication shall be provided with feed devices, when required.
4.11 Rotor
4.11.1 Fans shall be a part of the rotor, and made of nonsparking material on
TEFC or XP motors. Fans shall force the air from the nondriving end to the
driving end, and be suitable for rotation in both directions.
4.11.2 If required, guidelines for special rotor construction shall be indicated on
the motor data sheets or the requisition package.

4.11.3 Rotor balancing and the vibration requirements for motors are given in the
applicable standards of paragraph 4.4 of this specification.

5.0 NAMEPLATE
5.1 An 18-8 stainless steel plate shall be permanently affixed to the motor frame.
5.2 In addition to the NEMA standard markings, following information shall be stamped on
the nameplate.
 Buyer's equipment tag no.
 Manufacturer's name and serial no.
 Horsepower/kW and service factor
 Efficiency and power factor
 Percent starting torque and current, for motors 100 HP (75 kW) and above
 Make, type and size of bearings
 Make and type of lubricant
 Winding arrangement (Wye or Delta)
5.3 Motors with dual voltage shall have additional nameplate information, showing wiring
diagram and connection for each voltage and speed.

6.0 ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS


Table 1 of this specification lists the minimum additional requirements for the different size
motors, such as winding RTD's, bearing RTD's, space heaters, surge capacitors, differential
protection, etc. In addition following requirements shall apply:
6.1 Single Phase Motors
6.1.1 Motors in process service shall be capacitor start type, with high starting
torque and low starting current characteristics. Capacitor enclosure shall be
splash resistant.
6.1.2 Motors for nonprocess type applications, such as fans and blowers, shall
be either permanent split-capacitor type or split phase type.
6.1.3 Motors for the nonhazardous locations shall be totally enclosed type and
explosion proof type for the hazardous locations. Motors shall be arranged
for a 3/4 in. conduit.
6.2 Miscellaneous Features
6.2.1 Corrosion-resistant hex head type bolts shall be furnished external to motor
enclosure.
6.2.2 Lifting eyebolts, rings, or lugs capable of supporting the motor weight shall
be furnished.

Motors shall comply with the Buyer's engineering specification SN-252 "Equipment
Noise Level Requirements", and the NEMA MG1-12.49 and MG1.20.50.
requirements.

7.0 INSPECTION AND TESTING


7.1 General
Tests shall be conducted in accordance with the requirements of the latest revision of
the following applicable industry standards:
 NEMA MG1 parts 12 and 20
 IEEE 114, "Test Procedure for Single-Phase Induction Motors"
 IEEE 112A, " Test Procedure for Polyphase Induction Motors and Generators"
 API 541, "Form Wound Squirrel Induction Motors-250HP and Larger"
7.2 Shop Tests
7.2.1 Each motor shall be given a routine factory test prior to shipment. These
tests shall include the requirements listed in the following standards, as a
minimum:
 Category-A, B NEMA MG1 para 12.51
 Category-C and D API 541, para 4.3.2
7.2.3 When complete test is specified on the motor data sheets or in the
requisition package then, in addition to the routine test, complete test shall
include the requirements listed in para 4.3.5.1 of API 541.

8.0 CLEANING AND PAINTING


Unless otherwise specified in the requisition package, the motors shall be thoroughly cleaned of
oil deposits and rust, and then primed and painted in accordance with the manufacturer's
standard painting system. The paint shall be suitable for the equipment operating temperature
and environment.

9.0 PREPARATION FOR SHIPMENT


9.1 Preparation of the motors shall be made after all inspection and testing of the
equipment has been accomplished and the equipment has been released for shipment
by the Buyer.
9.2 All exterior machined surfaces shall be coated with suitable rust preventative.
9.3 Bearing housings with oil lubricated bearings shall be completely drained and cleaned,
and then internal areas of bearings and carbon steel lubricating system shall be coated
with a suitable oil-soluble rust preventative.
9.4 All flanged openings shall have at least 3/16 in. (5 mm) thick metal closures, with
synthetic rubber gasket. At least four full diameter bolts shall be used for flanged
openings.

9.5 All threaded openings shall have steel caps or solid-shank steel plugs.
9.6 Rotor of sleeve bearing motors shall be blocked to prevent axial or radial movement.
9.7 Space heater leads shall be accessible without disturbing the shipping package, and
shall be tagged for easy identification.
9.8 All contract probes and instruments shall be shipped installed in the motors. Small or
fragile parts shall be removed, tagged, and wrapped in waterproof material, and packed
in a box fastened to the motor.
9.9 A packing list shall be placed both inside and the outside of the shipping package.

10.0 SELLER DOCUMENTATION


10.1 Proposal Documents
Vendor shall furnish the following information with his proposal:
 List of exceptions to the specifications
 Outline drawings of the motor and all auxiliary equipment not mounted on the
motor
 Motor horsepower, full load and locked rotor current
 Space heater voltage rating and power consumption
 Power factor and efficiency at full, 3/4, 1/2 and 1/4 loads
 Speed-torque and speed-current curves for entire operating range
 Catalog cuts and special features
10.2 Certified Documents
Vendor shall furnish the following certified documents after release of the purchase
order:
 All the documents listed in paragraph 10.1 above
 Motor WK2
 Open circuit time constant
 Locked rotor power factor
 Contract Data Sheets
 Subtransient impedance

11.0GUARANTEE AND WARRANTY


11.1 Guarantee
All equipment and parts shall be warranted by the Seller against defective materials,
design and workmanship for one (1) year after being placed in service (but not more
than 18 months after the shipment).

If any malperformance or defects occur during the guarantee and warranty period, the
Seller shall make all necessary alterations, repairs and replacements free of charge,
free on board factory. Field labor charges, if any, shall be subject to negotiation
between the Seller and the Buyer.
11.2 Performance
The equipment shall be guaranteed for the satisfactory performance at all operating
conditions specified on the data sheet. Field checks on performance, when made by
the Buyer, shall be made within 60 days of the initial operation.
