Topic one (concept and generalities)

Section one: Leadership (concept and generalities)

Leadership is a matter of intelligence, trustworthiness, humaneness, courage and discipline. Reliance on


intelligence alone results rebelliousness. Exercise of humaneness alone results in weakness, fixation on
trust results in folly. Dependence on the strength of courage results in violence. Excessive discipline and
sternness in command result in cruelty. When one has all five virtues together, each appropriate to its
function, then one can be a leader – Jia Lin, Art of War (Book).

Sub section one: Meaning of Leadership

Why leadership?

Leadership and management are roles that we assume every day we don’t need think that it deals only
with senior level leadership or management.

We lead and manage our families.

We lead and manage ministries.

We lead and manage our relationships and communities.

Every one regardless of role plays the part of a leader and manager. That’s why its important.

Sub section two: Definition of leadership

The action of leading a group of people or an organization.

OR

Leadership is a process of social influence in which a person can enlist the aid and support of others in
the accomplishment of a common task.

Section two: (Difference between leadership and management, and role of a leader.)

Management Leadership
Management is the process of planning, Leadership is the ability or quality to motivate
organizing, implementing, coordinating and and inspire others to achieve a desirable goal.

Managers have people who work for them. Leaders have people follow them.
Management is a PROCESS. Leadership is a QUALITY
Bottom line: Leadership and management are two different terminologies, they must go hand in hand,
but they are necessarily linked and complementary.

Sub section two (skills or traits of an effective Leader, and how to become an effective leader)

1. Honesty and integrity- crucial to get people to believe and buy into the vision and goals.
2. Vision- ability to know where your are, where your want to go and chart a path for the future.
3. Superior judgment- able to make the right decision.
4. Inspiration- able to inspire a team and ensure that they understand their role in the bigger
picture.
5. Superior communication skills- able to keep team informed about where they are, where they
are heading and roadblocks along the way.

Becoming an effective leader

Emulate the traits or qualities of an effective leader

1. Be open, honest and full of integrity.


2. Maintain a vision
3. Exercise superior judgment
4. Inspire people around you
5. Have a bias for action
6. Develop superior communication skill
