media is a phrase being tossed around a lot. It is a website that does not just give
you information but interact with you while giving you information. It is a group of
internet based application that allows the creation and exchange of users generated

members of the news as the media. Adding to it, that social news site is also social

of the major channel of chatting through platforms such as 2go, BB chat, blogger and

There has been an increase in the mobile social media which has created

Similarly, SNS do effect one’s academic performance adversely. It causes the
gradual drop in the grades of the Graade-10 students directly. It affects the Grade-10
studies. Time wasting is a major issue in this regard. SNS are highly addictive to
those people who cannot control themselves into constantly using these sites,
prioritize entertainment over work and gives to much attention to social acceptance
and affiliation.
The situation is that if a student gives too much time on SNS, there is an

In addition, Mikolaj Jan Piskorski (2009) in his study, “Understanding the Uses
of Social Networks”, cites that people love to look at pictures, which is the killer
application of all online Social Networking Sites. Piskorski hypothesizes that people
who post pictures of themselves can show they are having fun and are popular
without having to boast. Another attraction of photos is that they enable a form of

and women look at other women they know. Nicole Ellison’s study (2008) on Social
Networking Sites provides very thought provoking insights. According to this study,
85 % of the respondents use one or more social networking sites. The extent of the
usage of Social Networking Sites has increased dramatically in the past two years
and the usage of Social Networking Sites as well differs considerably by age. Most of
the respondents aging 18 and 19 years old use Social Networking Sites (95%), yet
only 37% aging 30 years and above utilizes these networking sites. The majority
involving 18 and 19 years old, have more than 200 friends while those aged 30 and
with MySpace as the second choice. It was also found that about half of these users
utilize just one Social Networking Site, having only one profile, and participate in one
to five groups within Social Networking Sites. Profiles of Social Networking Sites are
fairly stable, with most respondents changing them monthly or less often. The
majority of the users of Social Networking Sites spend 5 hours or less per week.
Younger respondents report spending more time than older respondents. It also
emphasized that most students (87%) put access restrictions on their profiles.

This study complements the idea of Yeboah and Ewur (2014) that social
media takes much time of the students studies time, results in procrastination related
during lectures and difficulty in balancing online activities and academic preparation.
In a 2012 news article of the Irish Times, it pointed out that facebook can impact
study habits of students. This application is easily get through the phone and only
needs WIFI where you can easily connect everywhere. As a matter of fact, there are
more students who used their phones, iPad while they were supposed to be reading
textbook. As a result, social networking sites can affect the study habits of students,
particularly facebook.
According to Wang, Chen and Liang [15] students use social media tools for
and entertainment. On the contrary, Gross and Acquisti [16] argue that users may be
putting themselves at risk both offline (e.g., stalking) and online (e.g., identify theft).
Williams [17] points out that little empirical work has explicitly examined the effects of
Facebook, Twitter, and other social networking services, because of their probable
impact on society.

this trend in media would trickle down to impact the lives of youth everywhere.
There are numerous reasons why the internet has become the chosen means
by which adolescents discover their identity. Adolescents find that social networking
or the internet and social personal web pages offer them a safe place to tryon
different ‘hats’ or try out new personalities without the fear of rejection or
embarrassment and the normal risks associated with real life trials of the same
magnitude. Social networking sites are a major part of the general population’s lives
today [25]. From MySpace to Facebook to Twitter, our lives are consumed with
interacting via the internet. These sites not only allow us to connect with family,
friends, and strangers, but also play social games and follow the latest in our favorite
celebrity’s lives.
The changes that these websites have made in the average person’s life are
immeasurable. The term "Friends" can be misleading, because the connection does
not necessarily mean friendship in the everyday vernacular sense, and the reasons
people connect are varied [26]. Study habits, one of the variables in this study, are
learning tendencies that enable students to work privately [27]. Azikiwe [28]
describes that good study habits are good asset to learners because they assist
performance. Galbizo

Social media usage by students is so rampant recently because of easy
access to devices such as smart phones, i-phones, black berry, tablets, i-pad and
