SECTION V

INDUSTRY OVERVIEW

Projected Industry Sales and Profits

This business is expected to attain profitability in its 7th month.

Competitive Set

Pastillas are beloved soft milk candies that are a deliciously sweet legacy of the

Spanish colonial period in the Philippines. Pastillas is traditionally based on carabao’s milk.

They are rolled in white sugar and wrapped in soft Japanese Paper.

In Bulacan, pastillas are cooked in a large porcelain vat on a specially built

concrete stove, with the vat sitting snugly on a hole so that no heat could escape at its sides

from a wood fire underneath. A long bamboo paddle is used for constant stirring of the milk-

sugar mixture. Toward the end of the cooking process, when the mixture begins to thicken, the

stirring becomes more vigorous with the paddle grasped firmly with both hands and the stirring

coming from an arm-shoulder movement. In the food industry, there are many competitors of

our product Pastillows. Our products are hand-made which is much better than the processed

foods from the competitors. It also has a variety of flavors to choose from. It is also made to

order and we deliver it directly to our costumer.

External Environment

The external factors that may affect our economic sector is the continuously increase

of the price of the ingredients being used. We need to compromise a lot every time it increases.

Product Life Cycle

We are going to follow steps for us to manage this business well. We will start with

making a concept then ends with the disposal of the product once it reached its expiry date.

16
Barriers to Entry

One barrier between us and introducing our product is the presence of other businesses

in the same line of products. They would get in the way of our sales since they are direct

competitors and may potentially take our customers. Nevertheless, we will make sure that our

products are better in terms of quality. We will also make sure to be innovative when it comes

to holding our ground against them.

17
SECTION VI

MARKET ANALYSIS

Pastillas has been one of the most famous delicacies in the Philippines. During the

past years, different forms and flavors of the said delicacy were integrated including pastillows.

Uncle John’s Sweet Tooth seeks to build relationships with its customers whoever they may be.

Sweets have been one of the favorites of the people especially students and children all over the

Philippines. Old people are sure to love these since it is one of the delicacies that they grew up

with. This creates diversity in the types of potential customers but whoever they may be, they

will surely love our products.

Demographic Profile

Our target customers can be separated by age, occupation, and gender. Age is a big

factor to our target customers since most of the teenagers and kids like sweet delicacies such as

pastillas, candies and chocolates. Another factor is the occupation. It is the basis of capability of

an individual to purchase a product. Considering our product is very affordable, students can

also buy our pastillows since they are the target customers of our business. Ladies crave for

sweets most of the time than men do, hence, the former by more compared to the latter.

Psychographic Profile

The target market can be divided into the following groups: the youth group

and the adult group. The youth group can be defined as a lover of sweets. Most of them prefer

to try other kinds of sweets. While the adult group are the ones who have the higher ability to

purchase our product since they have an occupation.

18
Customer Behaviors

Teenagers usually look for something new in the market. Students are very

active when it comes to school activities, we want them to boost their energy with our

Pastillows. There were also some who are looking for a substitute for chocolates that they can

give to someone as a present. That is why we came up with creating a delicacy that they will

enjoy.

Target Market Opportunity

Uncle John’s Sweet Tooth will cater people who want to get their daily dose of

sweets in a relaxing and comfortable atmosphere. Our customers vary in age, although our

business works on online selling it means that most of our customers will be students and young

adults. Our Market Research shows that students mostly crave for sweets, which is why Uncle

John’s Sweet Tooth serves tasty sweets to satisfy the customers’ sweet cravings. On the other

hand, young adults, especially those who have work, tend to gravitate towards sweets to regain

their strength and energy. In fact, sweets contain carbohydrates which are essential for energy

Through the given profile, we were able to improve our product when it comes

to its appearance, taste or packaging. Since our target customers are youth, we can earn money

by selling Pastillows, whereas it is not usual in the market and have the least number of

competitors.

19
SECTION VII

COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS

Direct and Indirect Competitors

Pastelluxcious

 This business is our direct competitor for it sells the same product as

ours. They offer a lot of street foods and one of those is the Pastillows.

Jawo’s Pastillas

 This is an direct competitor. It is running for almost 6 years and known

for selling different variety of Pastillas except for the Pastillows.

Value Proposition

Jawo's pastillas have been long around and is trusted for its quality and

authenticity. It already boasts a large customer base that sustains it and gathers even

more customers.

Pastelluscioux, on the other hand, has already garnered a loyal customer base.

They are also boasting about the taste and quality of their products.

SWOT Analysis

Pastelluscioux offers other sweets besides pastillows which gives their customers a

variety of food items to choose from. However, their business is pretty small and is quite

limited in terms of finance. One opportunity we can derive from this business is that since they

are selling other products, the competitive atmosphere in terms of selling pastillows may be less

20
daunting for us. However, we cannot dismiss the fact that they may steal pastimallow sales

from us.

Jawo's is easily accessible by customers since it is found along a busy highway. It

also has a physical store. However, their customers only have a small spectrum of products and

varieties to choose from. We can use their lack of variety to our side by being able to give more

varieties and new renditions to our pastillows. However, they can still pose as a threat to us

since some people may prefer regular pastillas over pastillows.

CONTINGENCY PLAN

The following are the risks that the company might encounter and the actions that the

management will be taken:

1. Low Sales Level

The management has a back-up plan for this risk of having an unacceptable sale and it is

to strengthen and improve the product, its packaging and the way the company promotes

the Pastimallows. They will also do a catchy advertisement that will surely get the

attention of the possible customers.

2. Increasing Prices of Ingredients

To deal with this, the company will make adjustments to either the products or the

prices, whichever will be more beneficial and preferred by the customers. Uncle John’s
