Garden for Bugs

Year 4 Design Brief

The principal has come to our class for help to design a garden that will provide a place for
students to sit and relax whilst also providing an ecosystem to benefit the local bees and butterflies!

Brief: In groups of three, you will need to use your knowledge of living things, life cycles, the
environment and sustainability to design an amazing garden to fill an empty space in the middle of
the school.
REQUIREMENTS:
Garden measures 10m x 15m
Pathway through the garden
Somewhere for students to sit and relax or read
Plants and features that will support the butterflies and bees

Sustainable Development Goal 15: "Life on Land"

Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably
manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation
and halt biodiversity loss.

Plan of Action (1 hour per week)

Week 1: Learning about life cycles
Week 2: Learning about how insects rely on their environment to survive
Week 3: Investigating the space and researching plants
Week 4: Generating ideas and imagining possibilities (rough plan)
Week 5: Generating ideas and imagining possibilities (final design)
Week 6: Creating a diorama of your garden design
Week 7: Continue creating a diorama of your garden design
Week 8: Presenting your design to the principal and peer evaluation

Year 4 Design Brief
INVESTIGATING: You will be investigating and learning about the life cycle of bees and
butterflies as well as how these insects rely on their environment. You will also be taking
measurements and noting down observations of the space for the garden and researching the
plants that will benefit the insects.

GENERATING: You will use the Gardena garden design software to create some possible
garden designs. Create at least two possible designs and save them as a screenshot. Make sure
you meet the requirements and think about possible features that could make your garden
unique! Choose your favourite design and draw it on a piece of A3 paper. Make sure to include
colour, measurements and labels on your design.

PRODUCING: Using recycled materials and things you might find outside (e.g. rocks, bark, twigs
or leaves), follow your design to create a diorama of your garden!

EVALUATING: Swap dioramas with another group. Write down two stars and a wish about
their garden design. What's good about it? What would make it even better? The principal will
come and judge the designs and pick their favourite one! You will have the chance to explain
your design to the principal and give them reasons why your design is the best. The chosen
design will be used to inspire the actual garden to be set up in the middle of the school!

COLLABORATING & MANAGING: Throughout the whole design process, you will need to be
working together in your group of three to get the project finished. Make sure you are including
all of your group members. Will each of you have a role? How will you make sure that
everyone's ideas are considered?
