2. Set up an equation of motion for a 1-D simple harmonic oscillator under the effect of a damping
force proportional to its velocity. Hence solve the above equation for the case of underdamped
oscillation. Again show from the equation that the logarithm of the ratio of successive amplitudes
is constant (2+5+3)
3. (a) Define Phase velocity and Group velocity and find the relation between them.
(b) A vibrator of mass 1 gm is acted upon by a restoring force 107 dyne/cm of displacement and a
retarding force 4 × 103 𝑑𝑦𝑛𝑒/𝑣𝑒𝑙𝑜𝑐𝑖𝑡𝑦 and a driving force of 105 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝜔𝑡 dynes. Find the value of
maximum possible amplitude.
(c) A string of length l is stretched between the points x=0 to x=l. The string is strucked by a

4. (a) Check whether 𝑦 = 𝐴 + 𝐵𝑡 + 𝐷𝑡 2 represents a wave, where A, B, D are constants.
(b) Consider that a diatomic molecule of mass 𝑚1 and 𝑚2 connected by a mass less spring of
spring constant‘s’. If the molecule is free to oscillate along the length of the spring, Show that the

frequency of oscillation is 𝑓 = √ . where 𝜇 = and also find the ratio of amplitudes of
2𝜋 𝜇 𝑚1 +𝑚2

(c) Show that the instantaneous energy density is not constant6 but average energy density over a
complete period is constant for a damped harmonic oscillator. (3+4+3)
5. (a) Derive the expression for the fringe width for Young’s double slit experiment for interference
and hence show that the fringes are hyperbolic in shape.
(b) In a biprism experiment, the successive bright bands are 0.201mm apart, the distance from the
slit to the crosswire of the eye piece being 73.47 cm. The distance between the images are 3.732
mm and 1.242 mm for the two position of the convex lens. Determine the wavelength of the light
used. (3+3+4)
6. (a) A parallel beam of Na light strikes a film of olive oil (𝜇 = 1.6) on water. When viewed at an
angle 300 from the normal, the 8th dark band of the system is seen. What is the thickness of the
film?
