(a) Distinguish between acoustic and optical resonance.

velocities.
(d) Two beams of monochromatic light with intensities 𝐼1 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐼2 interfere constructively to produce
an intensity of 100mW. If one of the beam is shifted in a phase by 60 degrees, the intensity
reduces to 84mW. Find𝐼1 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐼2.
(e) Doppler Effect can be used to measure the speed of blood through vessels. Sound frequency
1.0522 MHz is sent through the vessels along the direction of blood flow. Reflected sound
generates a beat signal frequency 100Hz. The speed of sound in blood is 1545 m/s. Find the speed
of blood through vessel.
(f) How many lines would be visible if the wavelength of incident light is 589 nm and the number of
lines in the grating is 104 per mm?

2. Set up an equation of motion for a 1-D simple harmonic oscillator under the effect of a damping
force proportional to its velocity. Hence solve the above equation for the case of underdamped
oscillation. Again show from the equation that the logarithm of the ratio of successive amplitudes
is constant (2+5+3)
3. (a) Define Phase velocity and Group velocity and find the relation between them.
(b) A vibrator of mass 1 gm is acted upon by a restoring force 107 dyne/cm of displacement and a
retarding force 4 × 103 𝑑𝑦𝑛𝑒/𝑣𝑒𝑙𝑜𝑐𝑖𝑡𝑦 and a driving force of 105 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝜔𝑡 dynes. Find the value of
maximum possible amplitude.
(c) A string of length l is stretched between the points x=0 to x=l. The string is strucked by a

hammer at 2. Find the ratio of intensities of 3rd and 5th harmonics at 𝑥 = 4.

4. (a) Check whether 𝑦 = 𝐴 + 𝐵𝑡 + 𝐷𝑡 2 represents a wave, where A, B, D are constants.
(b) Consider that a diatomic molecule of mass 𝑚1 and 𝑚2 connected by a mass less spring of
spring constant‘s’. If the molecule is free to oscillate along the length of the spring, Show that the

5. (a) Derive the expression for the fringe width for Young’s double slit experiment for interference
and hence show that the fringes are hyperbolic in shape.
(b) In a biprism experiment, the successive bright bands are 0.201mm apart, the distance from the
slit to the crosswire of the eye piece being 73.47 cm. The distance between the images are 3.732
mm and 1.242 mm for the two position of the convex lens. Determine the wavelength of the light
used. (3+3+4)
6. (a) A parallel beam of Na light strikes a film of olive oil (𝜇 = 1.6) on water. When viewed at an
angle 300 from the normal, the 8th dark band of the system is seen. What is the thickness of the
film?
(b) What do you mean by optical flatness of a glass surface?
(c) Show that the diameter 𝐷𝑚 of the 𝑚𝑡ℎ Newton’s Ring, when two surfaces of radii of
