9 – GOLD MAPEH

Drugs is a common problem in the Philippines economic and social progress, since each individual
in this country has their own problems that lead them to think that this the only solution to escape it.
Some are just being take advantage of their current situation by syndicates, some are influenced by their
own bad influenced friends and some are just giving in to their temptation. Most of it comes from lack
of parental supervision and support but I think that if a person himself respect his own I think it can be
prevented.

When a person is addicted to a drug, the drug becomes so important that the person cannot
manage without it. Drug use distracts attention leading to academic failure and poor social skills. Stress
plays a major role in drug use and continuing drug abuse. It also creates problem in our family, school
and with our friends. The person’s reflexes will become slower; they will have trouble working and doing
things which require any physical and mental coordination. In spite of knowing the harmful effects of
drugs, people spend lots of money and consume them to forget their worries and sorrows and to seek
happiness. Once a person is addicted, it is very hard to stop taking drugs. Drugs get us involved in many
illegal activities such as crime, theft, etc. It leads to sexual assault and accidents. Young people use drugs
because of curiosity, peer pressure, boredom, finance problem and for pleasure. The person’s behaviors
tend to self-destructive activities and are often harder to think clearly and make good decisions. Drug
addiction is a complex but treatable disease. An effective way to get rid of drugs is to have good
companions, involvement in games and social activities, reading books, etc.

Right now, there are 3 million addicted of drugs in the Philippines. The President of the
Philippines, Rodrigo Duterte, urged citizens to kill suspected criminals and drug addicts and also said he
would order the police to adopt a shoot – to – kill policy, and would offer them a bounty for dead
suspects. It has positive effect of it but we cannot ignore that in every positive there is always negative.
The project he operated is fine but the problem is: Does all person can kill easily even though it is a
criminal? For me I can’t, since I’ve never experienced it before so I think some ways to prevent people to
not engaged into drug addicting. I don’t know if it’s effective but it’s just what I came up with my mind:

INVEST IN ANTI – DRUD EDUACTION & REHABILITATE DRUG ADDICTS are already taking actions
but it also one of the solutions I came up with so I just type it down. CREATE BETTER JOBS, per capital
the major of drug abuse (legal and illegal) occurs in poor developing countries. There are many
initiatives that a government can do to create a better job. One of them is to create a better educated
workforce. Another is to promote investments, both internal and foreign. And yet another is to establish
a brand that is exportable and has value around the world. Well, it looks like there is some truth to the
old adage “idle hands are the devil’s workshop” A good job not only keeps one occupied but it instills
pride and self – worth. In addition, good jobs help raises the standard the living for all and pushes a
developing country to a developed one.

IMPROVE BORDER CONTROL, while education, better jobs and rehabilitation will have a profound
effect on lowering the levels of drug addiction, there are still need to be vigilance at the borders.
Technology will help. Better trained officers will help. But I think one of the biggest contributors to a
porous border is corruption. However, I didn’t say that we all get rid of the officers and officials that are
corrupted, if we did that, we would have no one to protect the borders. It’s very hard to overcome
human nature. In most case, people are not bad, It’s the system that needs a reboot. a) Hire the
smartest people available. Use quantitative tests to identify best possible candidates. Do not based on
likeability or connections or alma matter. b) Increase the staff’s pay. You get what you pay for. Highest
pay can be deterrent for corruption. c) Commit to training. Teach best practices and learn the latest
techniques. Instill pride in the team. d) Re – evaluate all process and procedures and replace the ones
that incentivizes corruption. Inefficiency in the system encourages people to take short cuts. And short
cuts lead to under – the – table opportunities. There are always better ways to do things.

The things I came up with is difficult to accomplish in my opinion but with commitment, unity and
cooperation I think it can be done and make our country a better place.
