 Thornton Manor, near Heswall, was in the news in October
when Boris Johnson and Leo Varadkar met to try and thrash
out a Brexit deal. What was confusing is that the national news
said it was in Cheshire, there was no mention of Heswall or the
Wirral. If there is a Brexit deal by 31st October then maybe the
Wirral will go down in history as the start of a good Brexit deal?

 Crisp packets
recycled in
Heswall
We all do our best to recycle paper
and plastics but item that has to go to
landfill is crisp packets – until now.
Crisp packet recycling bins are springing
up across the Wirral.
Terracyle partnered with Walkers in 2018
to create a free recycling scheme for
crisp packets of all brands and Wirral is home to seven communal collection points.
Each of these communal collection points can be used by anyone to recycle their used crisp
packets.
Once collected, these crisp packets are separated by plastic type, cleaned and shredded to
turn them into plastic pellets. These pellets are then used to create park benches, plant pots,
watering cans and cool bags – transforming waste into new items.
Locally there is a recycling bin at Tesco, in Heswall, and at Calday Grammar School.
These sites are run on a voluntary basis, so before each visit, it is recommended that you
check that it is open.

‘travel the globe’ with
postcards of kindness
Residents at a Wirral care home are travelling the world to destinations near and far without
even leaving the building.
Staff at The Hazelwell, a residential, nursing, palliative and respite care home in Heswall,
have joined a Facebook group called Postcards of Kindness.
The project gives people
going on holiday the chance
to send postcards to care
home residents, leaving them
wonderful messages to read
from across the globe.
Postcards of Kindness was
set up in 2018 and has
expanded this year to include
many care homes. The idea
is to combat feelings of
loneliness and isolation and
help older people to feel that
there is always somebody
thinking of them by receiving
postcards from supporters of
the project.
The Hazelwell’s care home manager, Sue Ball said: “Sending postcards when on holiday has
become increasingly rare with everyone using their smartphone or social media to stay in
touch with friends and family back home. Thus, older people receive less postcards than ever
before too. In care settings, there is typically very little personal mail to engage and entertain
residents.
“Postcards of Kindness hope that anyone on their own travels will think of someone in care
and send a card to one of the settings who have signed up. Encouraged by the sentiment
that words, anecdotes and the sharing of holiday moments could really brighten someone’s
day, so we felt that this would be something our residents would love to be involved in at The
Hazelwell.”
The Hazelwell’s care home activities assistant Brenda Newey, an active Facebook user, came
across Postcards of Kindness on the social media site and said: “We are always looking at
new activities to join in with that will keep life interesting for our residents.
“I really hope that we will get lots of cards from far off places to share with everyone at The
Hazelwell, enough to plot on a world map and hopefully we can start to cover a wall with
different holiday destinations. We’ve already had several cards from around the UK as well as
one from New York!”

The Autumn classes are now underway at Heswall Hall and club members have certainly
been enjoying themselves on Monday mornings at Heswall Hall. The next class is on Monday
18th November at 10am. Visitors are always welcome to come along and join in the fun.
Club night meetings are also in full swing and the next one is on Wednesday 6th November
at 7.15pm for refreshments followed by a demonstration by Anne Houghton, one of the many
talented and talkative NAFAS demonstators at 8pm. New members welcome. Entry is free

Pots of cabbage!
November can be a bit
of a grey, miserable
month. My kids would
call it ‘meh’. I like to
inject some colour with
winter bedding plants.
A cheerful pot by the
front door can make you
smile on the gloomiest
morning.
Obviously, the choice of plants
for winter is not as large as
during the summer months
but there are enough varieties
around to make very attractive
combinations for pots. My
favourite plant for winter
pots has to be the ornamental
cabbage. These robust
beauties come in wonderful
colours including cream,
pink and purple – with either
attractive frilly or very spiky
leaves. They pair beautifully
with winter-flowering pansies
and hardy cyclamen.
Try planting three pots of
different sizes using a colour
scheme which co-ordinates
with the cabbages. Plant
a 50cm / 20inch pot with
four large ornamental frilly
cabbages surrounding a

central spiky one, to give
some height to the display.
Then choose a smaller pot
(38cm / 15inches) and plant
one frilly ornamental cabbage
surrounded by pink and
purple winter-flowering
pansies. Finally plant a small
pot (25cm / 10inches) with a
mixture of hardy cyclamen and
white pansies. The resulting
display will give you pleasure
through November, December
and January.
TIPS
l Select a frostproof container
because these pots need to
withstand wintery conditions.
The most dependable pots are
made of fibreglass, lead, iron,
heavy plastic, or stone. Most
terracotta will crack in cold
temperatures, but some glazed
varieties are frost-proof.
l Use a good general-purpose
compost. There are mixes
specifically made for use in
containers, which provide the
essential drainage that plants
living in pots need.
l Make sure you place plenty
of drainage material in the
bottom of the pots.
GARDEN VIEW
l A good compost will contain
enough slow release fertiliser
to maintain the plants for
several weeks during autumn
and winter. If they still going
strong as winter turns to you
can give them a bit of a feed,
but by February or March
you will want to think about
replanting your pots with
spring bedding.
l Think about gravel – I
like to use a layer of gravel
over the soil of my winter
pots for several reasons. It
gives the planted pots an
attractive finish, keeps rain
from splashing back on to
the plants, provides some
insulation for the soil and
reflects light and warmth in
any winter sun thus creating
a little microclimate in which
the plants will be happier.
l Water them! The plants
will need moisture around
their roots so water as needed
unless the soil in the container
is frozen. Do not water frozen
pots because the plants are
unable to absorb the water.

 Hundreds explore the hidden
tracks of Leverhulme Estate
Cyclists of all ages took the opportunity to explore some of the hidden tracks of Wirral’s
Leverhulme Estate.
The treelined paths at Brimstage Hall & Courtyard were opened to the public for the first time
on Sunday as part of the Leverhulme Summer Cycle.
Hundreds of cyclists, ranging from young children
to grandparents, got on their bikes to explore the
4 miles of tracks. Others chose to walk the paths
which extend from Brimstage to neighbouring
Thornton Hough.
The event was organised by Pedalare, which
promotes cycling, and Rethink Now CIC, which
works with communities to help them consider
what changes they can make to improve air quality
and their quality of life.
The event coincided with World Car Free Day and
came just a few days after Wirral had successfully hosted a stage of the OVO Energy Tour of
Britain.
In addition to the cycling, visitors were able to enjoy a selection of food outlets including the
newly opened Brimstage Courtyard Café.
Andy Mills, a director of Pedalare, said: “It was fantastic to see so many people of all ages
enjoying the hidden tracks of the Leverhulme Estate on their bikes.
“The tracks are normally used for farming purposes, so it was great to be able to open them
up to the public for the first time.

Birkenhead School
Birkenhead School and Linghams Booksellers in Heswall, recently welcomed best-selling
novelist JoJo Moyes to the Wirral to talk about her latest new book ‘The Giver of Stars’.
JoJo is one of the UK’s most accomplished authors and has sold more than 38 million books in
46 languages.
She initially started writing historical fiction, but it is her book ‘Me Before You’, published
in 2012 and that was later made into a movie, that has made her one of the most successful
authors for the past decade. JoJo believes that her latest novel is technically and lyrically her
best work to date, and the film rights have already been purchased for the book to be made
into a movie.
The novel was inspired by an article and images that JoJo saw in Smithsonian magazine
about a group of women who delivered reading material on horseback to some of America’s
poorest and most isolated illiterate households in Kentucky during the 1930s. In the novel
she tells the story of Margery O’Hare whose mission is to spread the wonder of books and
reading to the poor and the lost. The book is a feminist adventure and looks to pay tribute to
women’s work, endurance and female solidarity.
Over 200 guests attended the talk at Bushell Hall during which JoJo answered questions
from the audience and spoke with warmth and humour about her career
and inspirations for her books. Overall, another great evening with one of
the country’s leading authors hosted by Birkenhead School and Linghams
Booksellers.
JoJo Moyes is the latest in a number of high-profile speakers who have
recently visited the School as part of the School’s
Inspiring Talks Series. Other guests have included BBC
TV presenters and broadcasters, George Alagiah and
Kate Humble, health and fitness guru, Joe Wicks, author
and former politician, Jeffrey Archer and First Admiral
Sea Lord, Sir Philip Jones. On Thursday 31st October,
the School is welcoming Mark ‘Billy’ Billingham, a
former SAS soldier and star of Channel 4’s ‘SAS: Who

is recruiting volunteers
with big ideas and a great
energy for live events
Many readers will have heard of, or even visited, The Big Room at Heswall Hall.
The Big Room is a contemporary music and comedy brand. We are a community-based, grassroots
venue with an exciting future. In just two years, we’ve turned Heswall Hall into an exciting venue for a
great night out.
Many of our events sell out and we attract audiences from across Wirral and beyond.
We are now looking to add to our small team of volunteers to help build on this exciting and growing
brand. In particular, we need some help with event marketing and promotion, including digital and
social media, as well as the more traditional posters, flyers and street walking campaigns we use to
engage audiences. We are also keen to recruit younger people to the brand, as we are now developing
concerts that will appeal to younger audiences.
For young people, possibly in Sixth form or at college, volunteering is a great way to learn new skills
and develop experience for a CV, especially for those interested in a career in event management, stage
management, creative lighting, sound engineering or marketing. We offer some great opportunities! If
you know anyone who might be interested, please pass this article on to them.
We offer regular Big Stage concerts, a monthly 18+ comedy night and our flagship event, Three Bands
Live, which is presented in a style similar to the ‘BBC’s Later with Jools Holland’, making use of three
separate stages including the Hall’s main stage, which is one of the largest purpose-built stages on
Wirral. The versatility of Heswall Hall as a venue is a major strength for the Big Room.
I am Paul Dixon, the Big Room project leader and also a Heswall Hall trustee. The small team of
volunteers working with me do a fantastic job. Currently, we stage over 40 Big Room events per year. If
