Early doors
The Suburbs bar, in Charles Street, has
been one of the successes of Hoole. Always
popular with people from across Chester,
the bar has brought the street to life. But
now, licencing problems mean that the
bar has been forced to close early which 26
is making life tough for owner Kingdom
Thenga.
In this edition we also have news of a
death in Hoole, an appeal for funds for
the Hoole Christmas lights, Friends of
Alexandra Park, vandalism near the
bowling green, gardening, thought for
the month with Andy Glover, community
listings and much more.
We hope you enjoy this month’s edition 30
and please support your local traders.

Money needed to make
Hoole’s 20th lights
switch-on extra special
The organisers of the Hoole Christmas Lights Switch-on are hoping to raise £3,000 to make the event
go with a bang!
The 20th year of the Hoole Christmas Lights has inspired the organisers to make this anniversary
edition extra special
There has been a lot of money raised and spent on repairs since last Christmas in readiness for the
event on Saturday 23rd November at 6pm. But more fund raising is being done this month to pay for a
bigger stage, finish off repairs, cover insurance, traffic management and security costs.
Fund raisers include a concert at Hoole All Saints Church on Friday 25th October, a quiz night at the
Faulkner on Sunday 27th October as well as donation buckets in most Hoole shops and contributions
from the shopkeepers in Hoole.
Santa has been booked and it is confirmed that he is coming. But the organisers don’t have enough
money to pay for his reindeer because they can only fly Christmas Eve or for fireworks!
The best quote for fireworks is £2,000 for a great firework display from top professionals and the
reindeer will be £1000.
Organiser Noel McGlinchey said: “Let’s make sure Santa can bring his reindeer to Hoole this year and
give them a warm welcome not just with lights but with fireworks.
“Every little helps. No donation too small! Please help make Hoole Lights 20 the best ever.”

CRIME UPDATE
with Police Community Support Officer Keith Bartlett

Benches moved
following park
vandalism
POLICE and council staff have removed memorial benches from
Alexandra Park following a spate of vandalism in recent weeks.
Groups of teens have been hanging around the bowling green,
annoying bowlers during the day and creating a mess at night.
PCSO Keith Bartlett has been attempting to keep a lid on the problem by
speaking to the lads involved, with some success.
It seems that they have been dragging the wooden benches to under
the shelter near the bowling green so they can sit around without
getting wet.
A total of 18 memorial benches are being moved into temporary storage
over the winter so that there are fewer places for the groups to sit.
PCSO Bartlett said: “The fixed benches which are bolted down will
remain but we’ve had to move the other benches with plaques on until
the weather improves in the spring.
“The other night there were groups sat around and someone set fire
to a bench. They also left a huge mess near the bowling green which
we’ve had to clean up.
“Someone within the group is also believed to have kicked in car mirrors
on Canadian Avenue and Knowsley Road, so we will be speaking to
him.”
PCSO Bartlett admitted that moving the benches was not the answer to
beating vandalism but he said that it will make it harder for the groups
to hang around under the shelter.

Hoole man charged with attempted murder

Police in Chester have charged a 61-year-old man with attempted murder.
The charge follows an investigation into the serious assault on a 57-year-old man from Chester who
was badly injured.
Police were called to Alder Grove at 3pm on 3rd October following a report of a seriously injured man
in the street. A man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and has since been charged. Paul
Andrews, 61, from Alder Grove, appeared at Chester Magistrates’ Court on Saturday 5th October.

The Rev. Isaac Temple became Rector to provide assistance to the widows, orphans and

Fund set up by Royal Warrant during the Crimean War In the 1841 and 1851 Censuses, Isaac Temple is listed as
running a Boarding School at ‘Mayfield House’. It was
not an uncommon practice for clergymen
to do this.
The 1841 Census shows 16 boys between
the age of 9 and 14 boarding at ‘Mayfield

likely to be children of well to do families
in Cheshire but because many of them
had common names making identification
difficult, only the details of two of them
can be verified as being local.
The 1851 Census lists 12 pupils and because
that Census includes their place of birth,
the whereabouts of their families can
be ascertained and eight lived within 30

It appears that Isaac Temple gave up his

FEATURE
Simple ways
to reduce
your plastic
footprint
Stop straws - If a straw is a must, instead of
a plastic one purchase a reusable stainless-
steel straw and carry it with you.
Invest in reusable produce bags - A single
plastic bag can take 1,000 years to degrade.
Purchase or make your own reusable
produce bag but be sure to wash them
often.
Give up the gum – Chewing gum is made of a
synthetic rubber which is actually plastic!
Buy boxes over bottles - If your laundry detergent
comes in a box it will be more easily recycled than a
plastic bottle.
Buy from bulk bins - If possible, purchase food, like cereal,
pasta, and rice from bulk bins using your own container
or bag. Not only will you save on packaging you’ll also save
money.
Take your own cup to coffee shops - Some establishments
offer a reduction in price for this!
Ditch the disposables - Disposable nappies are a huge source
of landfill. Modern cloth nappies are nothing like the
monstrosities of yesteryear. Check them out, reduce your
baby’s carbon footprint and save money in the process.
Squeeze your own - Make your own fresh squeezed
juice or eat fruit instead of buying juice in plastic
bottles. It’s healthier and better for the environment.
Lead with your lunch - Pack your own lunch in
reusable containers and bags.
Use a real razor - with replaceable blades instead of
a plastic disposable razor.
These are all simple steps but if more of us follow
them they have the potential to make a big impact
on our joint plastic footprint.

FINDING HOPE IN A
TIME OF CRISIS BY THE REV
ANDY GLOVER
We appear to be suffering a great crisis of hope. It’s taking place loudly in
politics and economics; it’s taking place quietly in the hearts of millions at
this moment. By hope, I don’t mean wishful thinking. I’m not talking about
“holding a positive thought,” as one friend calls it. When I speak of hope,
I mean the confident anticipation that goodness is coming. A rock-solid
expectation, something we can build our lives on. Not the delicate and
fragile hopes most people are trying to get by with. Andy Glover has lived in Hoole

hope. But I’ll be honest—far too often what gets presented as the “hope” Pastor, before becoming the
of Christianity feels more like a bait and switch. “We understand that you Pastor and now Team Leader.
will eventually lose everything you love, that you have already lost so much.
Everything you love and hold dear, every precious memory and place you
will lose, but afterward you get to go to this New Place Up Above!” Like a
game show, where you don’t win the car or the European vacation, but you do get some luggage and the
kitchen knives.
The world doesn’t believe it. And there are good reasons why.
When you consider the pain, suffering, and heartbreak contained in one children’s hospital, one refugee camp,
one abusive home or war-torn village over the course of a single day, it’s almost too much to bear. But then
consider that multiplied out across the planet, over all the days in a year, then down through history. It would
take a pretty wild, astonishing, and breath-taking hope to overcome the agony and trauma of this world.
How is God going to make it all right? How is he going to redeem all of the suffering and loss
of this world . . . and in your own life? What we ache for is redemption; what our heart cries
out for is restoration.
At a time when people often have trouble finding reasons to hope, those who place their trust in the God of
the Bible need more than ever to “give to anyone who asks an account of the hope that is in them”. There is
something specific about the hope that comes from faith, in order to root their lives in it. Hoping, then, means
first of all discovering in the depths of the present a life that leads forward and that nothing is able to stop. It
also means welcoming this life by a yes spoken by our whole being. As we embark on this life, we are led to
create signs of a different future here and now, in the midst of the difficulties of the world, seeds of renewal
that will bear fruit when the time comes.
The church community should be the clearest sign of this new world to come was the existence of
communities made up of people of different backgrounds and languages. Going beyond the divisions of all
sorts that keep people apart from one another, men and women can live as brothers and sisters, as God’s
family, praying together and sharing their possessions according to the needs of each person, working hard
to have “one and the same love, to be united in spirit and focused on the same thing”. In that way the church
should shine out like points of light in the world. From its very beginning, Christian hope kindled a fire on the
earth.
There’s an ancient prayer that I love to return to when I’m thinking about hope, it my pray for you, “I pray that
God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will
overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.”
