* Subject to the discretion of the inspection function, determination of these elements

need to be made on a small proportion only of the samples analysed.

2) The inspection and testing procedure shall be used in conjunction with either:-

Sections 1 and 14 of the latest issue of BS L100, BS 7448 Part 1 (or ASTM E399),
ASTM E602, ASTM G47, and ABP 6-5232 where ultrasonic inspection is called
for by the drawing;

Or for U.S. supply:

AMS 4201, ASTM B557M, ASTM E8, ASTM E399, ASTM E602, ASTM G47
and ABP 6-5232 where ultrasonic inspection is called for by the drawing.

3) Provided that all the mechanical and other specification properties are satisfied, an
alternative ageing procedure may be adopted involving either a controlled heating
rate, or a two stage ageing. If an alternative procedure is used, the details of this
artificial ageing treatment shall be contained within the Certificate of Conformity.

Two-stage artificial ageing may be performed with or without cooling.

4) Where gauge length, A = 5D

5) Where gauge length, A = 50mm

6) The Certificate of Conformity shall be specially endorsed and the recommended

heat treatment specifically stated.

7) Material shall be considered to have acceptable stress corrosion resistance provided

that upon completion of this additional ageing it meets the requirements of lines
13, 14, 15 and the acceptance criteria of line 32.

8) Resistance to stress corrosion cracking shall be demonstrated on a routine basis, for

all plates by electrical conductivity testing as defined in line 32.

M&P FORM 03
98 Notes (Continued) 9) Tests to verify this capability shall be performed at a frequency to be agreed
between Airbus UK, Materials and Processes department and the manufacturer.
The test frequency shall not be less than one specimen per plate thickness range
produced per month.

10) Where:

25 < a ≤ 50mm use a C-ring test piece.

a > 50mm use a short transverse tensile test piece.

11) A Kq value for (a4-a) and (a5-a) <15% a (as defined in ASTM E399 for angled
notches) is acceptable providing all other requirements are achieved. Where:- a, is
the average crack length, calculated using the centre measurement and the two
midway values measured on the crack front. a4 and a5 are the crack lengths
measured at each end of the crack front on each surface of the specimen.

12) British standard BS7448 Part 1 specification (Appendix B) represents the (L-T)
and (T-L) crack plane identifications with (X-Y) and (Y-X) designations
respectively.

13) Where a manufacturer cannot successfully demonstrate the relationship defined in

line 47 between plane strain fracture toughness and notch yield to Airbus UK, then
testing to the requirements of line 40 in lieu of line 47 at the test frequency defined
for line 47 is required.

14) The test sample shall be extracted from the fracture toughness location specified in
L100. It shall be such that the standard tensile and the notched tensile test pieces
(for both the L and LT directions) can be prepared from it and shall be as close to
each other as practical.

15) When the material does not meet these requirements, it may be tested in
accordance with line 40. The material shall be considered to have acceptable
plane-strain fracture toughness provided that the results of the test are not less than
the values given in line 40.

16) Specimen diameter of 12.7mm

17) Specimen diameter of 26.9mm
