MODULE-32A
Basic concepts of matrix methods of structural analysis
________________________________________________________

Degree of static indeterminacy: To solve the statically indeterminate structure apart from
equilibrium equations, we need additional compatibility equations. These numbers of
additional equations is called degree of static indeterminacy.

Degree of kinematic indeterminacy: In kinematically indeterminate structure, the number

of unknown displacement components is greater than the number of compatibility equations.
For these structures, additional equations based on equilibrium must be written in order to
obtain a sufficient number of equations for the determinations of all the unknown
displacement components. The number of these additional equations necessary for the
determination of all the independent displacements components is known as the degree of
kinematic indeterminacy.

Force method:

Determines the degree of static indeterminacy. Release the redundant. Care should be taken
in selecting the internal and external redundant so that the released structure is statically
determinate, stable and as simple as possible. Co-ordinates 1, 2 ,. . . . .n are assigned internal
as well as external.

The net displacement at co-ordinates in the actual structure is evidently the sum of the
displacement caused by the applied loads and displacement due to the redundant in the
released structure.

These equations represents compatibility equations, is sufficient for the determination of all
the redundant.

Displacement method:

Determines the degree of freedom of the beam. This is called kinematic indeterminacy.
Assign co-ordinates to each degree of freedom. Lock all the joints so that each span behaves
like a fixed ended beam. Calculate fixed end moments due to applied loads, as well as
yielding of supports. These represents and respectively.
Compute the forces (moment) at coordinates by adding moments.

Develop the stiffness matrix. Next let the supports and joints be unlocked permitting
displacements at the co-ordinates. These displacements require at
coordinates.

Let the external forces at co-ordinates, then the condition of equilibrium of

the structure may be expressed by the equations.
