The torpedo was the 55omm Mle l919D, developed and built
by the Naval Dockyard at Toulon. The Mle r9r9D was powered
by a kerosene wet-heater engine, and was optimised for range
(D = Distanc.) over speed,]j lt had two speed settings: a high-
speed mode (CY = Crande Viźesse) in which the torpedo was
propelled at ]5 knots over a distance of 6ooom; and a low-
