Basu, Tanya. “Teens Are Anxious and Depressed after Three Hours a Day on Social

Media.” MIT Technology Review, MIT Technology Review, 11 Sept. 2019,

https://www.technologyreview.com/f/614297/teens-are-anxious-and-depressed-after-

three-hours-a-day-on-social-media/.

This is a very recent article written by Tanya Basu. She used a psychological study to

acknowledge the negative effects technology is having on the mental health of American

teens. She also touches on what can be done to help this according to the author of the

study. This is relevant to the negative side of the argument on how technology influences

mental health.

Web Fawcett, Kirsten “6 Ways Technology Can Help Mental Health Disorders.” Mental Floss,

10 Oct. 2017, http://mentalfloss.com/article/505508/6-ways-technology-can-help-mental-

health-disorders.

Kirsten Fawcett lists six ways technology has been used to aid mental illness from

acknowledging symptoms to treatment. The intentions with the article are to shed light on

the severity of mental illness and just how common it is. It paints a positive picture of

technology and its effect on mental health as a resource for healing. This is relevant to the

positive side of the argument.

Web Jones, Alison. “More Technology Use Linked to Mental Health Issues in At-Risk

Adolescents.” Today.duke.edu, Duke Today, 3 May 2017,

https://today.duke.edu/2017/05/more-technology-use-linked-mental-health-issues-risk-

adolescents.

Alison Jones uses a study done by Duke University for this article, summarizing its

findings. It seems fairly neutral as it addresses both the negative and positive affects of

technology on mental health. Therefore it is relevant to both sides of the argument.

Web Makin, Simon. “Searching for Digital Technology's Effects on Well-Being.” Nature News,

Nature Publishing Group, 28 Nov. 2018, https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-018-

07503-w.

Simon Makin uses statistical data and psychological studies to verify if technology and

social media is negatively effecting children and young adults. The findings are not

completely conclusive that technology is what is increasing the rates of mental illness and

suicide. He also touches on the tech companies themselves and changes that can be made

to limit the negative effects. This article is relevant in its neutrality.

Web Mathieson, SA. “How Apps and VR Are Changing Mental Health Treatment.” The

Guardian, Guardian News and Media, 15 May 2019,

https://www.theguardian.com/mental-health-supplement-2019/2019/may/15/how-

technology-is-transforming-mental-health-treatment
Mathieson wrote about the positive effects of technology on mental health, primarily on

retirement communities. This was based in the UK and elaborates on the mutual

relationship between children and the elderly through storytelling and education on

technology. This is relevant as a positive argument for technology and its effectiveness

on mental illnesses and dementia.

Web Nichols, Hannah. “How Modern Life Affects Our Physical and Mental Health.” Medical

News Today, MediLexicon International, 3 July 2017,

https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/318230.php.

Hannah Nichols sheds light on the negative effects of technology on mental health. She

covers aspects such as depression, jealousy and aggression. She used statistical data and a

study done by Indiana University. This article is relevant to the negative side of the

argument.

Web O’Hara, Delia. “Wearable Technology for Mental Health.” Apa.org, American

Association, 6 June 2019, https://www.apa.org/members/content/wearable-technology.

Delia O’Hara references many psychologists, researches and tech companies in her

article about the ways technology can be used to benefit mental health. It is relevant to

the positive side of the article. However, she acknowledges that in many ways we are in a

stage of early development and can only predict how it will be used in the future.
