Casebook- Impacts of Sleep on Athletic and Academic Performance

A., West. “Sleep - A Game Changer in the Athletic World?” Schweizerische Zeitschrift Für

Sportmedizin & Sporttraumatologie, vol. 66, no. 4, Oct. 2018, pp. 37–42. EBSCOhost

, search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=s3h&AN=133573436&site=eds-live.

In this source, the author, Anna West, explains the impact of sleep on athletic abilities and

training.

She goes into detail about how the lack of sleep can negatively affect an individual’s

athletics. Also, the author breaks down this topic by specifically mentioning how sleep

gives athletes the energy and recovery needed to perform to their full ability. Similarly,

the

article, found from EBSCOhost, discusses how if an athlete does not receive the required

amount of sleep, their performance in their sports will most likely be noticeable. With

that

being said, the author is also very credible, making the information being provided from

the

study useful and reliable. Author, Anna West, was the founder of Sleep2perform, which

is

specifically related to sports and sleep. So, she has a qualified background in the field I

am
researching. Her intended audience for her article, “Sleep - A Game Changer in the

Athletic World?”, is those who are concerned or interested in the impacts of sleep.

Overall,

her work is very credible since she is qualified and all material was peer reviewed

through

EBSCOhost. Lastly, since the information is reliable, it would be beneficial to include in

my research paper because it breaks down the specifics of how sleep can be detrimental

to

one’s athletic performance, which is one of the main focuses of my research question.

Cullen, Tom, et al. “The Effects of a Single Night of Complete and Partial Sleep Deprivation on

Physical and Cognitive Performance: A Bayesian Analysis.” Journal of Sports Sciences,

vol. 37, no. 23, Dec. 2019, pp. 2726–2734. EBSCOhost,

Author Tom Cullen and three others wrote the article, “The Effects of a Single Night of

Complete

and Partial Sleep Deprivation on Physical and Cognitive Performance: A Bayesian

Analysis”, which focuses on the differences between complete and partial sleep

deprivation on the body. Cullen specifically identifies these impacts and differences with

the athletic and academic perspective. In order to study the partial and complete sleep

deprivation, Cullen ran several tests to decipher between each. Then, the impacts were

noted and it was found the sleep deprivation has many detrimental effects on cognitive
and athletic abilities. Overall, Tom Cullen is a reliable author because he has written

several other peer reviewed articles, such as this one found in EBSCOhost, making him a

leading writer and published author. Also, his intended audience for the article was those

seeking more information on the effects of sleep not only on athletics, but also

academics. This source would be very helpful to include in my final research paper

because Cullen includes research about both academic and athletic performance effects

due to sleep, which fully answers my research question. So, I will be using his working

and citing him as a main author for my research.

Guo, Lan, et al. “Association between Weekday Sleep Duration and Nonmedical Use of

Prescription Drug among Adolescents: The Role of Academic Performance.” European

Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, vol. 28, no. 9, Sept. 2019, pp. 1265–1275. EBSCOhost,

doi:10.1007/s00787-019-01294-9.

The article, “Association between Weekday Sleep Duration and Nonmedical Use of Prescription

Drug among Adolescents: The Role of Academic Performance”, written by Lan Guo and

five others, discusses how sleep duration and drug use can affect academic performance.

More specifically, the authors studied Chinese adolescents and how much sleep they

received versus their cognitive skills. Also, the authors took into account many other

factors

such as age, weight, locatio, and more to fully examine the outcomes. Not only did the

authors look into weekday sleep, but they also studied the impacts of drug use on
academics. Even though this is not what I am trying to answer with my research question,

it

is still helpful to look into other outside factors that might play a role in impacting

acaedmic

performance. Also, Lan Guo is a credible author since she has graduated from

Washington

State Universirt and research behvaorial topics, such as the one I am studying as well.

With

that being said, Guo’s work is beneficial to include in my research because it identifies,

using experiements, the relationship between an individual’s weekday sleep duration and

drug use and their performance in school.

“National Sleep Foundation.” National Sleep Foundation, https://www.sleepfoundation.org/.

This source is a national organization used to inform the general public about the importance of

sleep and the impacts that sleep deprivation and other sleep-related problems can have. Since

this source is a website, rather than one specific article, many different articles can be found

about sleep. For example, there is lots of information about sleep problems and the effects of

sleep on the body. More specifically, there are articles about sleep paralysis, lucid dreams, and

more found on this website. Also, since this website is a national organization run my multiple

qualified sleep experts, it is reliable and credible. Also, the intended audience of the authors

was the general public or those who wanted to gain more knowledge about sleep and its

importance. The website is also updated regularly, meaning that all the data it provides is
relevant and can be deemed reliable for my research. Overall, this source would be beneficial

to include in my final research paper because it provides background information about sleep

and its impact on one's body that can be used in the beginning of my research paper. Lastly,

since the website is credible, along with the articles from the website, it would be good to

include.

Mental Health Weekly Digest published an article titled, “Researchers from Cincinnati

Children’s

Hospital Medical Center Provide Details of New Studies and Findings in the Area of

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorders (Last Night’s Sleep In Relation To Academic

Achievement and Neurocognitive ...)”, which discusses the results of recent studies’

results

related to standardized acaedmic achievement after a previous night’s sleep. The article

States many different statistics about how the lack of sleep can cause problems in

adolescents such as ADHD. These problems can then lead to poor performance in
academics and lower scores on standardized tests. Lastly, the author mentions how to

combat these issues in children by recognizing the possible impacts and receiving the

necessary amount of sleep. Although this article is short, it provides lots of useful

information that should be included in my research on the acaedmic perspective of sleep.

Also, no specific author is stated in the article, but the work was published by Mental

Health Weekly Digest which focuses on publishing reviewed articles, related specifically

to

health problems, such as sleep deprivation. With that being said, their intended audience

was the general public, because they were hoping to spread awareness about how

detrimental the lack of sleep can be on young children in school. Overall, I plan to use

this

source because it is credible and has lots of potentially good information for answering

my

initial research question on the impact of sleep on academic and athletic performance.

Sun, Wanqi, et al. “Associations of Weekday-to-Weekend Sleep Differences with Academic

Performance and Health-Related Outcomes in School-Age Children and Youths.” Sleep

Medicine Reviews, vol. 46, Aug. 2019, pp. 27–53. EBSCOhost,

doi:10.1016/j.smrv.2019.04.003.

The author Wanqi Sun, and four others, compare weekend-to-weekday sleep studies and

durations. It compares bedtime, rise time, and different sleep points on weekdays and
weekends. The studies showed that students with substance/drug use have poorer

academic

performance and is also related to how much sleep they are getting on the weekends

compared to weekdays. Weekday-to-weekend difference in sleep duration also showed

an

association with poorer academic performance and depressive symptoms, as well as a

higher risk of overweight/obesity. The main purpose of this article is to inform us on how

sleep duration of the weekends can affect sleep during the weekdays. The audience for

this

article would be for anyone who wants to know how their weekend sleep can affect the

rest of their week. I think this article would benefit many people, especially teens in

school,

who don’t get much sleep on the weekends. I know the author is credible for this source

because they have many peer reviewed publications along with many sleep research

clinics. I will use the information that I learned from this in my research article because it

answers my questions about sleep during the week compared to weekend sleep.

Wang, Kurt, et al. Sleepwalking through School : New Evidence on Sleep and Academic

Performance. Bonn, Germany, 2016. EBSCOhost,

it

e=eds-live.
The main author of this source, Kurt Wang, and two others, advocate for later school starting

times

and argue that increased sleep duration may benefit schooling in many ways. They

examine how sleep length is related to academic performance with evidence from the

National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health. The main purpose for writing this

article is to inform the audience that increased sleep is associated with improvements in

classroom concentration as well as increased educational attainment. They ran many tests

and had evidence to prove this statement. The audience for this piece is anyone who

wants

to learn more about sleep and academics. Many teachers or administration may want to

learn more about this topic and relate it to the classroom. The author for this source is

credible because they had many statements of evidence to prove their points and they are

researchers on this topic. I will use the information I learned from this article in my

research paper because it answered one of my main questions that I will be answering in

my paper.
