The method of mix design consists of determining the water content and percentage of fine aggregate
corresponding to the maximum nominal size of aggregate for the reference values of workability,water–
cement ratio and grading of fine aggregate. The basic data required for the design of concrete mix are:
characteristic compressive strength at 28 days (fck), degree of workability, limitations on durability for
the type of exposure; type and maximum nominal size of aggregate; and standard deviation for
compressive strength of concrete. The steps are as follows as per the Indian Bureau of Standards
Where
= target average compressive strength at 28 day
= characteristic compressive strength at days
S =standard deviation and

From Table 5 of IS 456:2000, maximum water-cement ratio = 0.45
Adopt Water Cement Ratio = 0.38
Selection of Water Content
From Table 3 (IS10262:2009), volume of coarse aggregate corresponding to 20mm size aggregate
and fine aggregate (Zone I) for water-cement ratio of 0.50 ( IS10262:2009,Cl .4.4) = 0.60
In the present case water-cement ratio is 0.38 Therefore, volume of coarse aggregate is required
to be increased to decrease the fine aggregate content. As the water-cement ratio is lower by 0.05
the proportion of volume of coarse aggregate is increased by 0.01. Therefore, corrected proportion
of volume of coarse aggregate for the water-cement ratio of 0.38 = 0.624
