Syllable-Stress
THINGS TO REMEMBER!
1. A word can only have one stress. In a very long word you can have a
secondary stress but it is always a much smaller stress.
2. Only vowels are stressed, not consonants. The vowels in English are a, e, i, o,
and u. The consonants are all the other letters.

-ment etc.
Suffixes: -ion, -ual, -uous, -ial, -ient, -ious, -ior, -ic, -ity takes priority over all, when word with
suffixes: -ion, -ual, -uous, -ial, -ient, -ious, -ior, -ic, -ity ending" is followed by a suffixes: -al, -ous,
-ly, -er, -ed, -ist, -ing, -ism, -ment ending .
Stress only SHIFTS IF The -ION Suffixes is Added to word with -ATE Suffix
The -tion and -sion and -ation suffixes are base suffixes for more related suffixes, namely

syllables are added to the word: the syllable previous to the -tion or -sion carries the word's primary
stress.
