Abstract

There are many students and even some young professionals who are addicted to Defense of the

Ancients or DOTA. This is a kind of computer game that can be played by multiple

players and is one of the most popular game to young students. Many students get

addicted to this game, and they can even stay in long hours inside computer shops just to play

this kind of game. There are studies proving that getting addicted to playing computer games

affects students' school performance. Sometimes, in order to make the game exciting; they make

a bet that whoever wins a certain match gets payed by the opposing player, so it becomes a form of

gambling. This study uses descriptive-analytic, all data is collected through a survey-questionnaire.

It is appropriate for the study because researchers will know the effects of playing DOTA on

students. The survey-questionnaire done by the researchers is based on their observations of

various DOTA players and reading various articles and websites about DOTA. All data collected

is described by a variety of statistical method. From the data gathered in this study, the following

are proven; one to two hours are usually spent by students in playing Defense of the Ancients

(DOTA). The most common reason why Grade 11 students of Ramon Teves Pastor

Memorial-Dumaguete Science High School continue to play Defense of the Ancients (DOTA) is

that they play it during their free time, and the most common effects experienced by students are

blurring of their vision, cannot concentrate because of tiredness, they become quick tempered,

and they cannot manage their time properly. This study is beneficial to teachers, parents, and

students. It is better to be aware of the possible effects that DOTA can cause to students' health,

education, and social interaction.

Introduction

The use of computers in our country is widespread. We know that this helps in the daily

livelihood of people especially in the professions that needed it, and students who always use

computers for projects, assignments and various researches. It is like a common notion to most

adults that a number of children, some are even students are most likely to engrossed in playing

computer games of all sorts than playing physical sports and games outside. Also access to

such virtual games are now made very easy by the sprouting industry of cheap tablets, computers,

cellphones and venues that cater them such as computer shops so playing often could always be a

possibility. One of this these famous and captivating and easily accessible games is Defense of

the Ancient (DOTA).

It has become a recreation for players, other people's trouble fixers, and sources of work.

The most popular game for students is DOTA. It is Defense of the Ancients to be exact. There is

so much fun in this game because it can entertain students and they can also have the chance to

interact with other players.

Computer and gaming cannot be prevented, because at any corner of a computer shop, it will

be present. In playing DOTA, people can enter a world of thought or virtual reality. By watching

or traveling with the help of a monitor on the computer.

There are so many advantages we can use in the use of computers, but they also have

affiliated effects. So the subject used by the researchers is about playing DOTA, as it gives more

insight as to why students play DOTA, and its negative effects on them.
Background of the Study

This research was conducted in Ramon Teves Pastor-Memorial Dumaguete Science High

School, located on the street of Ma. Asuncion Village Ave., Barangay Daro, Dumaguete City.

This institution was established in the land donated by Don Ramon Teves Pastor in 1988. This

school consists of secondary and senior high school.

Communications Department of Stanford University. His information gathering began in 1999

and he released his findings on a website called The Daedalus Project. According to Yee, there

are various reasons for playing computer games such as the Defense of the Ancients (DOTA). He

was able to group these reasons into four and these are the following: achievement, socialization,

immersion, and vent / escape

Results show that the most common reason why students in 11th grade play Defense of

the Ancient is to pass the time, which makes up for 70% of the garnered data, followed by

alleviate tiredness with 63.33%. One reason is also excitement, with 60%. And lastly, to relieve

stress, with 56.67%.

their studies. Sharing the response of students to other people, whether or not playing DOTA is

important to them, is essential to them as Senior High School students. As seen, all thirty

students, covering 100% of the surveyed population answered that playing DOTA is not

important in their studies.

Summary and Conclusion

From the data garnered, the researchers came up with the following conclusions; the

usual number of hours spent by the students in playing DOTA in a day is 1-2 hours. The

researchers also found out that the main reason of students in playing DOTA is that they use it as

a form of leisure during their free time. Based from the collected information, the main effects of

playing DOTA are blurring of students’ vision, poor time management, and lastly, tiredness

during class hours thus affecting their performance in school.

.
Recommendations

For further exploration, the researchers recommend the future undertakers of the study, to

be aware and to take notice of the effects of playing DOTA (Defense of the Ancients) because

based on the information gathered it possessed negative effects on students. The researchers

would also advise the future undertakers of the study to exert more time and focus on the

positive effects of playing DOTA to arrive at more reliable results.
