 Leonardo da Vinci was born on 15th April, 1452, in the village of Vinci (Italy), after which he got his
surname.
The boy was the illegitimate (born to unmarried parents) son of Ser Piero da Vinci and Caterina.

At the age of fifteen, he was apprenticed to Andrea del Verrocchio, the leading artist of Florence and
the early Renaissance.
Leonardo da Vinci jotted most of his notes down from right to left, which means that you had to use a
mirror to read them. It is believed that he did it on purpose in order to avoid others from reading his
The legendary painter was slow to finish his works (some of his paintings, writings and inventions never
came true).
Leonardo da Vinci was a strict vegetarian. He bought caged animals only to set them free.
Leonardo never married and had no children.
He used to dig into graveyards at night to steal corpses and study human anatomy.
Da Vinci invented a hydraulic pump as well as built a movable bridge for the Duke of Milan.
Leonardo da Vinci invented an inflatable water tube and designed the first bicycle.
The Mona Lisa and the Last Supper brought him widespread fame.
Da Vinci is supposed to be the first person who designed a parachute.
Leonardo made drawings of modern inventions, such as a helicopter, a calculator, solar power etc.

A lot of people think that the painting Mona Lisa depicts Lisa del Giocondo, the wife of Francesco del
Giocondo, a wealthy silk merchant. By the way, it took da Vinci about 10 years just to paint the Mona Lisa’s lips.
On his deathbed, Leonardo said, “I have offended God and mankind. My work did not reach the quality
it should have.”
