What are We Going to Learn

Today?

The importance of the Water Cycle

The 4 steps of the Water Cycle

The Water Cycle is constantly repeated

Importance of the Water Cycle

How often Do you think

you use How much
longer of your body
water? of the Earth
without do you think
do you think
• Name some water or is made of
things that are is water?
made with
without water?
water food?
Importance of the Water Cycle
• Water is used for several things like showers,
drinking water, cooking, and cleaning.
• It is possible to live longer with food. You can
survive 8 to 14 days without water and 7 to 8
weeks without food.
• The earth is 72% water.
• The body is up to 60% water.
• When the sun Evaporation
heats up water
and turns it into
vapor or steam
• The water vapor
or steam leaves
the river, lake or
ocean and goes
into the air
Condensation
• Water vapor in the air gets cold and changes
back into liquid, forming clouds
• You can see the same sort of thing at home
– Pour a glass of cold water on a hot day. Water
forms on the outside of the glass. That water
actually came from the air. Water vapor in the
warm air, turns back into liquid when it touches
the cold glass
Collection
• When water falls back to Earth as precipitation,
it may fall back into the oceans, lakes or rivers
or it may end up on land
– When water ends up on land it can become
a part of groundwater or stream back to
oceans or lakes
Precipitation

• Occurs when so much water has condensed that the air cannot hold
it anymore
• The clouds get heavy and water falls back to the earth in 4 different
forms
Continuous Cycle

• This cycle is constantly repeating itself

Wrapping up the Water Cycle

• The cycle of evaporation and condensation

that controls the distribution of the Earth’s
water as it evaporates from bodies of water
(lakes, rivers, or streams), condenses,
precipitates, and returns to those bodies of
water
 What are the four steps, in order?
1. Evaporation, Condensation, Precipitation,
Collection
2. Condensation, Precipitation, Evaporation,
Collection
3. Precipitation, Collection, Condensation,
Evaporation

into liquid, forming clouds
