STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS – II
(Civil Engineering)
Time: 3 hours Max. Marks: 70
Note: 1. Question Paper consists of two parts (Part-A and Part-B)
2. Answer ALL the question in Part-A
3. Answer any FOUR Questions from Part-B
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
PART –A
1. a) Mention the process of analyzing the fixed arches. [3M]
b) How does the approximate methods useful in preliminary design and analysis? [4M]
c) Sketch the cable stayed bridge and mark the various components of it. [4M]
d) Contrast between the moment distribution and Kani‟s methods of analysis. [4M]
e) List any three methods of force and displacement methods of analysis. [4M]
f) When does flexibility method is more suitable than stiffness method. [3M]
PART -B
2. a) A three hinged segmental arch of horizontal span 40m and central rise 8m is hinged [8M]
at the springings and crown. It carries a u.d.l of 20kN/m over the left half of the span
together with a point load of 100kN at 10m from right support. Find the Support
reactions and (RA, RB, H). Normal thrust and radial shear at 10m from the left
support.
b) Determine the horizontal thrust in a semi-circular arch of radius R, hinged at [8M]
springings, if it carries a triangular load the intensity of which varies from zero at
the left end to “w” per unit length at the right and (EI = constant). Find also the B.M
at the crown.
3. a) Analyse the frame shown in figure by Portal method. [8M]
b) A three storey building frame with 3 m each floor height is under horizontal loading [8M]
as shown in Fig. Analyze the frame for forces in Top storey using cantilever method
.Assume necessary data.
4. a) A cable ABC of uniform cross section is used to span a distance of 80 m. The cable [8M]
is subjected to uniformly distributed load of 30 kN/m run. The right support „B‟ is
5 m below the left support „A‟ and the lowest point on the cable „C‟ is located
below left support „A‟ by 10 m. Solve for the reactions in the cable. Solve for the
maximum and minimum values of tension in the cable.
b) Determine reaction components at A and B, tension in the cable and the sag of the [8M]
cable shown in Fig. Neglect the self weight of the cable in the analysis.
5. a) Using moment distribution method analyse the two span continuous beam loaded as [8M]
shown in Figure, if the moment of inertia of AB = I while that of BC = 2I. The ends
A and C are simply- supported. Sketch the B.M. and S.F. diagram.
b) A Portal frame ABCD is fixed at A and hinged at D. AB = BC = CD = 4 m. Find the [8M]
moments at A, B, C & D, if a horizontal force of 10 kN is acting at B using moment
distribution method.
6. a) Using Kani‟s method, analyse the two-span continuous beam loaded as shown in [8M]
Figure if the moment of inertia of span AB = 3 I, while that of BC= 2I.
b) A continuous beam ABCD 20m long is s.s. at its ends and is propped at the same [8M]
level at B and C as shown in the figure. If support B sinks by and 20 mm, Analyse
the beam by Kani‟s method and determine the end moments.Take E = 2.1×105
N/mm2 and I = 85 ×105 mm4.
7. a) Analyse the beam shown in Figure if the downward settlements of supports B and C [8M]
are 200/E and 100/E I respectively ( in kN-m units). Use Flexibility method.
b) Analyse continuous beam shown in figure using the stiffness method. Draw BMD. [8M]
Given AB=BC=10m.
