WCDMA RAN
AAS Feature Parameter Description 2 Overview

2 Overview

2.1 Introduction
The AAS module is a new type of radio frequency (RF) module that uses common public
radio interface (CPRI) ports to connect to baseband processing units in the same way as the
remote radio unit (RRU) and radio frequency unit (RFU). The AAS module incorporates the
functions of RF modules and antennas. Each AAS module has multiple transmit and receive
channels.
Beams from an AAS module can be adjusted on both vertical and horizontal planes. Beam
adjustments help improve wireless coverage and increase network capacity.

2.2 Benefits
An AAS module provides the following benefits:
l Saves antenna space: The AAS module occupies less antenna space than an RRU and
traditional antenna, thereby helping operators free up more antenna space for other
devices.
l Supports the beamforming function: The AAS module can be used to increase network
capacity in heavy traffic areas.

2.3 Architecture

2.3.1 AAS Hardware

The AAS has a modular design. Figure 2-1 shows its logical structure.

Figure 2-1 AAS logical structure

NOTE

The AASs of different models have different structures. For more information, see associated AAS
hardware descriptions.

The AAS module consists of the following units:

l Active Antenna-Management Unit (AAMU): controls the AAS module. The AAMU
connects to the BBU using common public radio interface (CPRI) ports and to the AAS
module's other units using cables.
l Active Antenna-Radio Unit (AARU): serves as the RF subsystem of the AAS, used to
implement the transceiver function and provides the phase calibration function. It is
recommended that this unit be installed.
l Active Antenna-Cover Unit (AACU): protects the AAAU from rainwater and dust. If no
AARUs are configured, one AACU must be configured.
l Active Antenna-Passive Unit (AAPU): serves as the RF signal interface of the AAS,
used to provide an interface for external RRUs/RFUs and transfer RF signals.
l Active Antenna-Antenna Unit (AAAU): serves as the antenna unit of the AAS, including
the passive antenna and remote control unit (RCU).

2.3.2 RET
The logical objects of the remote electrical tilt (RET) function for passive antennas are RET
subunits, and the logical objects of the RET function for active antennas are virtual RET
subunits.

RET for Passive Antennas

Figure 2-2 shows external and internal control. The RET function for passive antennas
implements external or internal control, depending on which device the AAS module is
connected to.
l The RET function implements external control when the AAAU is connected to RRUs
using an AISG cable. (Note that these RRUs can belong to either the same base station
as the AAS module or to a different base station.) External control complies with the
Antenna Interface Standards Group (AISG) protocol and requires RET signal processing
of the RCUs in the AAAU.
l The RET function implements internal control when the AAMU connects to the BBU
using a CPRI cable. This connection method is used because the AAAU does not have
AISG ports. Internal control requires the AAMU to use one CPRI port to forward RET
signals to the RCUs for signal processing. For details about the RET function for passive
antennas, see ALD Management Feature Parameter Description.

RET for Active Antennas

The RET function for active antennas requires that the BBU connect to the AAMU, as shown
in Figure 2-3. The RET function for active antennas adjusts the downlink tilts of beams from
AAS modules by modifying the tilt attribute of the related virtual RET subunits. Features
related to the RET function for active antennas are described later in this document.

2.3.3 AAS Configuration

The AAS configuration is different from the RRU configuration. The AAS includes four
configuration objects: AAS, AARU, VRET, and VRETSubunit. One configuration object
corresponds to one AAS device, including the device attributes, such as the subrack No. of the
AAS. The AARU objects are similar to the RRU objects. One AARU object corresponds to
one AARU module, including the module attributes, such as slot No., RAT, and the number of
TX/RX channels. During AARU configuration, the configuration objects VRET and
VRETSUBUNIT are automatically created, indicating the virtual antenna and virtual antenna
subunit in the AARU, respectively. The relationships are similar to those between RRU
configuration objects RET and RETSUBUNIT. VRET is the parent object of
VRETSUBUNIT and manages the number of VRETSUBUNIT. VRETSUBUNIT includes
the attributes such as virtual connection port, polarization mode, uplink and downlink tilts,
horizontal azimuth, and horizontal beamwidth. Figure 2-4 shows the different configuration
objects of an AAS compared to an RRU.

WCDMA RAN
AAS Feature Parameter Description 2 Overview

Figure 2-4 Configuration objects of AAS and RRU

An AARU corresponds to one VRET object, and a VRET includes a maximum of eight
VRETSUBUNIT. Each VRETSUBUNIT can be configured with 1, 2, or 4 connection ports.
Connection ports are numbered in an RXY format. The meaning of X and Y is as follows:

l Y indicates the number of a logical channel on the horizontal plane and can be set to A or
B. A indicates +45° polarization; B indicates –45° polarization.
l X indicates the number of a logical port on the vertical plane and is an integer ranging
from 0 to 7. Each logical channel can have multiple logical ports. Beam characteristics
can be defined for each port separately. Downtilt angles on the vertical plane can be
defined for the AAU3902.
Figure 2-5 shows the diagram of logical channels and logical ports.

WCDMA RAN
AAS Feature Parameter Description 2 Overview

Take AAU3902 as an example. The relationships between the logical channel, logical port,
and antenna polarization are as follows:

Antenna Logical Logical Port

Polarization Channel

+45° A R0A R1A R2A R3A R4A R5A R6A R7A

–45° B R0B R1B R2B R3B R4B R5B R6B R7B

NOTE

1. Either logical channel A or B of the AAU3902 can transmit or receive signals.

2. The AAU3902 does not support the modification of the TX logical port switch at the channel level
by running the MOD TXBRANCH command but supports the modification of the TX logical port
switch at the module level.
3. The AAU3902 does not support the modification of the RX logical port switch at both the channel
level and the module level by running the MOD RXBRANCH command.

WCDMA RAN
AAS Feature Parameter Description 3 AAS Vertical Multiple Sectors for UMTS

3 AAS Vertical Multiple Sectors for UMTS

This chapter describes WRFD-261103 AAS Vertical Multiple Sectors for UMTS.
This feature splits a sector served by AAS modules into an inner sector and an outer sector.
The inner and outer sectors correspond to an inner cell and an outer cell, respectively. These
cells use the same frequency but have overlapping areas.
This feature is mainly used to expand downlink capacity in hot spots (possibly due to cell
resource insufficiency) when no extra frequencies are available.
In hot spots (such as urban areas), base stations are close together and strong interference
easily occurs. After the AAS Vertical Multiple Sectors for UMTS feature is applied, the outer
and inner cells overlap and these two cells cause strong interference for each other in
overlapping areas. When using this feature in dense urban areas, adjust the tilts of beams in
these cells to minimize the interference.

NOTE

l This feature is mainly used in scenarios where downlink capacity needs to be expanded (possibly
due to insufficient cell resources).
l This feature is not recommended in scenarios where only uplink capacity needs to be expanded. If
only uplink capacity needs to be expanded (possibly due to heavy uplink load), use the AAS Virtual
Four Uplink Channels for UMTS (Vertical) feature described in 5 AAS Virtual Four Uplink
Channels for UMTS (Vertical).

The area covered by an inner cell is small because of the large tilt of the beams in the inner
cell and interference from the outer cell. The lower the AAS module is placed, the smaller the
area covered by the inner cell. Therefore, this feature is suitable for the scenarios where traffic
density at the site center is high (within the coverage area of the inner cell) while traffic
density near the site and at the site edge is evenly low. With this feature, the throughput in
inner cells accounts for a large proportion of the throughput of the entire site. This feature is
recommended in the scenario where there are 30% or more users in inner cells.

WCDMA RAN
AAS Feature Parameter Description 3 AAS Vertical Multiple Sectors for UMTS

Figure 3-1 AAS Vertical Multiple Sectors for UMTS (side view)

As shown in Figure 3-1, ULTILT and DLTILT are specified for VRETSUBUNIT. A beam is
split into two beams (beams 1 and 2), which correspond to cell 1 and cell 2, respectively.
These two cells use the same frequency and each of them has its own beam. The tilt of beam 1
is α1 and that of beam 2 is α2. In UMTS mode, it is recommended that the difference between
α1 and α2 be set to 5°. Specifically, α2 is equal to α1 plus 5°.

The AAS Vertical Multiple Sectors for UMTS feature sets high requirements on application
scenarios. When traffic in the inner and outer cells is basically the same, this feature produces
optimum gains and system resources can be fully utilized. However, after this feature is
applied in most scenarios, the following cases occur: The number of users and traffic volume
in the inner cell are less than those in the outer cell. Downlink load congestion is more likely
to occur in the outer cell, compared with the inner cell. A lot of downlink power resources are
not utilized in the inner cell. To further increase the gains of this feature and expand the
application scenarios, the HSDPA inter-cell power sharing function is added.

Interference between inner and outer cells may reduce uplink throughput of outer cells. It is
recommended that WRFD-151205 UL CoMP (Joint Reception) be enabled for both inner and
outer cells. In this way, the softer handover area is expanded so that the interference between
inner and outer cells caused by unbalanced uplink and downlink coverage is reduced in the
soft handover area. This feature prevents uplink user throughput of the outer cell from
decreasing due to mutual interference between inner cell and outer cell, thereby further
increasing uplink capacity.

NOTE

For details about activation, activation observation, and deactivation of the Uplink CoMP (Joint
Reception) feature, see Uplink CoMP (Joint Reception) Feature Parameter Description.
For details about activation, activation observation, and deactivation of the HSDPA Inter-Cell Power
Sharing feature, see Power Sharing Feature Parameter Description.
When the AAS Vertical Multiple Sectors for UMTS feature is activated, the power sharing function
between HSDPA cells is not under license control. Power can be shared only between two split cells. In
addition, an independent power sharing group is preferentially formed by split cells after the AAS
Vertical Multiple Sectors feature is enabled.

After this feature is applied, the two HSDPA cells generated are called inner cell and outer
cell. If the average load is limited at different periods, dynamically adjust the available
HSDPA power to fully use the AAU power resources, improve average user throughput, and
enhance user experience.

WCDMA RAN
AAS Feature Parameter Description 4 AAS Dividual Tilts by Carrier for UMTS

4 AAS Dividual Tilts by Carrier for UMTS

This chapter describes WRFD-261105 AAS Dividual Tilts by Carrier for UMTS.
With the AAS Dividual Tilts by Carrier for UMTS feature, the carriers operating on different
frequencies of the same frequency band in the same RAT have their independent downtilts on
an AAS module. An AAS module can be configured with multiple carriers and therefore
operators can use this feature to expand network capacity, and the downtilts of these carriers
can be independently adjusted. In a sector with multiple carriers, you can use one carrier to
ensure continuous coverage and increase the downtilts of other carriers to ensure capacity
expansion for hot spots.
The AAS Dividual Tilts by Carrier for UMTS feature applies to sectors where at least two
frequencies are configured. For example, frequencies F1 and F2 are configured in a sector.
According to the network plan, F1 is for continuous coverage and F2 is for capacity
expansion in hot spots in scenarios where the traffic is unevenly distributed, specifically, the
traffic near the sector center is very high. After AAS Dividual Tilts by Carrier for UMTS
feature is enabled, F1 can provide continuous coverage and F2 with a larger tilt can absorb
traffic in hot spots. Theoretically, the interferences between F2 cells decrease and the network
capacity increases because the carrier using F2 has a larger downtilt than the carrier using F1.
Users can set ULTILT and DLTILT for different virtual RET subunits (VRETSUBUNIT).
One beam is vertically split into beam 1 and beam 2, which correspond to cell 1 and cell 2,
respectively. In addition, the two cells use different frequencies on the same frequency band.
See Figure 4-1. In UMTS mode, the tilt difference between beam 1 and beam 2 cannot
exceed 5°, that is, α2 – α1 = [0°, 5°].

AAS Feature Parameter Description 5 AAS Virtual Four Uplink Channels for UMTS (Vertical)

5 AAS Virtual Four Uplink Channels for

UMTS (Vertical)

This chapter describes WRFD-261101 AAS Virtual Four Uplink Channels for UMTS
(Vertical).
The 4-way RX diversity of a traditional RRU/RFU uses two dual-polarized antennas. Inside a
single column (or multi-column) active antenna, the AAS Virtual Four Uplink Channels for
UMTS (Vertical) feature enables the active antenna to provide four uplink vertical beams with
different tilts, two of which radiate at +45° polarization and the other two at –45°
polarization. In the downlink, an active antenna still has only one vertical beam. This feature
provides extra receive diversity gains and array gains, thereby increasing the uplink
throughput and network capacity.
To use this feature, you need to associate the four logical ports (CONNPN 1–CONNPN 4) of
a virtual RET subunit to the same sector and configure four RX antennas (by setting ANTM
to 4). This allows this sector to support four-way uplink reception. Specifically, uplink
reception capacity is expanded from two-way reception to four-way reception. Configure
different horizontal planes for the four ports, for example, R0A, R0B, R1A, and R1B. As
shown in Figure 5-1, the angle difference between the tilt α1 of Beam 1 and the tilt α2 of
Beam 2 is 5°. If the downtilt is configured to α1 when this feature is enabled, that is, the tilts
of both the downlink beam and the uplink beam 1 are α1, the uplink beam 2 with a tilt of α2
will be automatically generated after this feature takes effect, and α2 is equal to α1 plus 5°.

NOTE

When configuring the AAS Virtual Four Uplink Channels for UMTS (Vertical) feature on the AAU3901
or AAU3902, you can associate four connection ports with two virtual RET subunits that work for one
sector. However, this configuration is not recommended.

WCDMA RAN
AAS Feature Parameter Description 7 Network Impact

7 Network Impact

7.1 AAS Vertical Multiple Sectors for UMTS

7.1.1 System Capacity

The AAS Vertical Multiple Sectors for UMTS feature enables two beams with different tilts
to be configured on two sectors, and the two cells in the two sectors work in the same
frequency. This feature helps increase downlink capacity for cells. However, capacity gains
vary according to site conditions and UE distribution.

In typical urban areas, when the downlink capacity is increased, throughput of UEs near the
cell center rises sharply. When the downlink cell load reaches 70% and users of the inner cell
accounts for over 30%, the throughput gains are as follows:

l For the full buffer traffic model: The average throughput increases by 50% to 80% in
common urban areas, and 30% to 60% in densely populated urban areas after sectors are
split.
l For the burst traffic model: The average throughput increases by 20% to 50% in common
urban areas and densely populated urban areas after sectors are split.

When the uplink cell load reaches 70% and users of the inner cell accounts for over 30%, the
throughput gains are as follows:

l For the full buffer traffic model: The average throughput increases by 60% to 100% in
common urban areas and densely populated urban areas after sectors are split.
l For the burst traffic model: The average throughput increases by 30% to 50% in common
urban areas and densely populated urban areas after sectors are split.
l The transmit power of UEs near the cell center decreases by 2 dB to 5 dB.

If both the HSDPA inter-cell power sharing function and the AAS Vertical Multiple Sectors
for UMTS feature are enabled, downlink capacity gains can be increased. Compared with the
non-power sharing case, power sharing generates the following gains when the following
three conditions are met: The cell is in densely populated urban areas. The average downlink
load in the two split cells is between 25% and 70%. The traffic model is Burst.

l The average throughput gains are between 5% and 10%.

Issue 01 (2018-04-10) Copyright © Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. 17

WCDMA RAN
AAS Feature Parameter Description 7 Network Impact

l The throughput gains at cell edges are greater than 10%.

7.1.2 Network Performance

This feature adds one intra-frequency cell to the area covered by the original cell, resulting in
extra intra-frequency interference. In overlapping areas, these two cells cause strong
interference to each other, and the Ec/Io greatly decreases. Intra-frequency interference in
overlapping areas is stronger than that in non-overlapping areas. As a result, the KPIs related
to call completion rate, service drop rate, and handover success rate deteriorate. However,
service-related KPIs improve. In some areas, the average CS and PS service drop rates per
day may increase by about 10% to 20%.
After the HSDPA inter-cell power sharing function is enabled, the downlink AAU power
resources can be fully used. If the number of users is small in the inner cell but large in the
outer cell, the remaining HSDPA power resources in the inner cell are shared to the outer cell,
which causes that the average cell load slightly increases. In this situation, the downlink cell
load increases and downlink inter-cell interference increases, which may slightly deteriorate
the CS service drop rate, PS service drop rate, CS RAB setup success rate, and PS RAB setup
success rate of the cell. Meantime, this function yields positive gains for uplink and downlink
service KPIs for outer cells because available power resources increase.

7.2 AAS Dividual Tilts by Carrier for UMTS

7.2.1 System Capacity

This feature helps increase downlink capacity by applying appropriate downtilt angles for
different carriers. Typically, increasing tilts increases downlink capacity by 2% to 5%.

7.2.2 Network Performance

Because two carriers use different tilts, these carriers differ in coverage performance and
consequently the directed retry decision (DRD) function cannot take effect in cells served by
these carriers. As a result, KPIs related to the call completion rate, call drop rate, and inter-
frequency handover success rate deteriorate.

7.3.1 System Capacity

When the AAS Virtual Four Uplink Channels for UMTS (Vertical) feature is used, throughput
of all UEs increases and that of local UEs rises dramatically. When the uplink cell load
reaches 70%, the throughput gains are as follows:
l For the full buffer traffic model: The uplink average throughput increases by 60% to
100% in common and densely populated urban areas.

l For the burst traffic model: The uplink average throughput increases by 30% to 50% in
common and densely populated urban areas.
l The transmit power of UEs near the cell center decreases by 2 dB to 5 dB.

7.3.2 Network Performance

The network performance gain can be evaluated as follows:
l In ideal scenarios:
If UEs are evenly distributed in areas covered by two uplink beams in a cell, the received
total wideband power (RTWP) of the two uplink beams equally increases and therefore
this feature can bring maximum performance gains.
l In non-ideal scenarios:
If UEs are distributed only in areas covered by one uplink beam in a cell, the RTWP of
this uplink beam can increase to the upper limit but the RTWP of the other uplink beam
does not increase. In this case, this feature can bring only limited performance gains.

AAS Feature Parameter Description 8 Engineering Guidelines

8 Engineering Guidelines

This chapter provides engineering guidelines for the AAU3902. For details about engineering
guidelines for other AASs (such as the AAS3910), see 3900 & 5900 Series Base Station
Initial Configuration Guide.

The tilt of an AAS module is the sum of the mechanical tilt and RET tilts. The mechanical tilt
is fixed upon installation and cannot be changed after the AAS module is installed. RET tilts
include the following: RET tilts of passive antennas can be set using the TILT parameter.
RET tilts of active antennas can be set using the DLTILT and ULTILT parameters. The
following provides the ranges for mechanical tilts, RET tilts of passive antennas, and RET
tilts of active antennas.

For the AAU3902:

l Mechanical tilt (configuration object: AAS)

-3°, -1.5°, 0°, 1.5°, 3°
l RET tilt of passive antennas TILT (configuration object: RETSubunit)
– Low-frequency passive antennas operating on the 790-960 MHz frequency band:
[0, 10]
– High-frequency passive antennas operating on the 1710-2690 MHz frequency band:
[2, 10]
l RET tilt of active antennas DLTILT/ULTILT (configuration object: VRETSubunit)
[0, 12]
If the AARU operating on the 2100 MHz frequency band is used, the maximum
difference between beam tilts is 5°.

8.2.6 Activation Observation

Perform the following operations after active antennas were deployed:

l Check whether any alarms were falsely generated.

l Run the NodeB MML command DSP VRETSUBUNIT to query the status of virtual
RET subunits.

8.3 Deployment of AAS Vertical Multiple Sectors for

UMTS

8.3.1 Application Suggestions

Use this feature in hot spots when the following conditions are met:

l The operator does not have extra frequencies.

l The downlink load of the target cell has reached or exceeded the downlink load threshold
(70%) for capacity expansion.
l In densely populated urban areas, the site height is higher than 25 m, and the distance
between base stations is equal to or less than 500 m.

Issue 01 (2018-04-10) Copyright © Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. 31

WCDMA RAN
AAS Feature Parameter Description 8 Engineering Guidelines

l In common urban areas, the site height is higher than 30 m, and the distance between
base stations is less than 900 m.
– The total downtilt on the site is smaller than or equal to 10°, after the AAU is used
in the site, the electrical tilt is less than or equal to 7°.
– Traffic is available near the site. Deploy the AAS Dividual Tilts by UL/DL for
UMTS feature in scenarios where traffic of inner cells accounts for 30% to 70% of
the total traffic.

8.3.2 Required Information

This feature requires the following information:

l Traffic statistics: used to identify hot spots

l Drive test results and performance call history records (PCHRs) or measurement reports:
used to analyze traffic distribution and coverage conditions
l NodeB configuration scripts: used to learn about power specifications and the multi-
carrier strategy
l Site engineering parameters: used to learn about installation information, mechanical
tilts, distance between sites, and radio environments

8.3.3 Planning

8.3.3.1 RF Planning
1. Frequency planning:

An inner cell must use the same frequency as the corresponding outer cell.

2. Power configurations:

l Maximum power planning: The maximum transmit power of the AAU3902 is 2x40 W.
– If the total transmit power of the inner and outer cells does not reach the maximum
transmit power of the target AAS module after sector splitting, it is recommended
that the transmit power of an inner cell and the corresponding outer cell be the same
as the transmit power of the original cell.
Take the AAU3902 for example, if the transmit power is 30 W before sector
splitting, the transmit power is 30 W in both the inner and outer cells after sector
splitting. The total transmit power of inner and outer cells is 60 W, which does not
reach the maximum transmit power of the AAU3902.
– If the total transmit power of the inner and outer cells exceeds the maximum
transmit power of the target AAS module after sector splitting, it is recommended
that the transmit power of an inner cell and the corresponding outer cell be half of
the transmit power of the original cell.
Take the AAU3902 for example, if the transmit power is 50 W before sector
splitting, the transmit power is 50 W in both the inner and outer cells after sector
splitting. The total transmit power of inner and outer cells is 100 W, which exceeds
the maximum transmit power of the AAU3902. To avoid this situation, reduce the
transmit power of an inner cell and the corresponding outer cell to be half of the
transmit power of the original cell. In this way, the total transmit power is 50 W.

WCDMA RAN
AAS Feature Parameter Description 8 Engineering Guidelines

l Pilot power planning: It is good practice to set the pilot power before and after sector
splitting to be less than or equal to 10% of the total transmit power to provide sufficient
power for HSDPA services.
– If the transmit power of an inner cell and the corresponding outer cell remains
unchanged before and after sector splitting, ensure that the pilot power before and
after sector splitting remains the same so that coverage edges of the sector will not
change.
Take the AAU3902 for example, if the transmit power is 20 W and the pilot power
is 2 W before sector splitting, the pilot power is 10% of the total transmit power.
After sector splitting, the transmit power is 20 W in both an inner cell and the
corresponding outer cell. It is recommended that the pilot power be configured to 2
W in both the inner and outer cells.
– Assume that the transmit power of the inner and outer cells is half of the transmit
power of the original cell before sector splitting. If the pilot power is 5% of the total
transmit power before sector splitting, it is recommended that the pilot power of
both the inner and outer cells remain unchanged after sector splitting, that is, the
pilot power increases to 10% of the total transmit power so that coverage edges of
the sector will not change. If the pilot power is 10% of the total transmit power
before sector splitting, it is recommended that the pilot power of both the inner and
outer cells remain unchanged after sector splitting and the downtilt be adjusted so
that coverage edges of the sector will not change.
It is good practice to enable the AAS Vertical Multiple Sectors for UMTS feature when
the proportion of number of users served by the inner cell to number of users served by
the inner and outer cells is greater than or equal to 30%. When the feature is enabled:
– If the proportion is greater than or equal to 30%, configure the pilot power based on
the pilot power planning. Table 8-5 lists common configurations in this scenario.

Table 8-5 Typical proportions of pilot power

Scenario Power Power proportion Whether to optimize
proportio after sector splitting downtilts
n before
sector Inner Outer

Cell power remains 5% 5% 5% No

unchanged after
feature activation 10% 10% 10% No

Cell power reduces 5% 10% 10% No

by half after feature
activation 10% 10% 10% Yes

– If the proportion is lower than 30%, increase the pilot power to expand the coverage
scope of the inner cell to increase the proportion of number of users served by the
inner cell to number of users served by the inner and outer cells. However, the
proportion of the pilot power to the total transmit power should not be higher than
15%. To avoid affecting neighboring sites, do not adjust pilot power of outer cells.
An increase in pilot power compromises throughput of inner cells and increases
interference from inner cells to outer cells. Table 8-6 lists common configurations
in this scenario.

3. Downtilt planning:

It is recommended that downtilts be planned along with pilot power so that coverage edges of
the sector will not change and coverage of neighboring cells will not be affected. The
following are configuration suggestions:

l If the pilot power remains unchanged before and after sector splitting, it is recommended
that the downtilt of outer cell remain to be the same as that of the original cell and the
downtilt of inner cell be the sum of outer cell downtilt and tilt difference (5°for and
AAU3902).
The configuration examples are as follows:

AAU3902 Feature Not VMS (Two Cells)

Enabled
Outer cell Inner cell
(Single Cell)

Uplink tilt α1 α1 α1+5°

Downlink tilt α1 α1 α1+5°

l If the transmit power of inner and outer cells after sector splitting is half of that before
sector splitting, and the proportion of pilot power to the total transmit power remains
unchanged, reduce the downtilt of outer cell within a proper range (for example, reduce
the downtilt by 1°) and set the downtilt of inner cell to be the sum of outer cell downtilt
and tilt difference.
The configuration examples are as follows:

4. Scrambling code planning:

After the AAS Vertical Multiple Sectors for UMTS feature is enabled, an inner cell and an
outer cell will be created. For outer cells, use the original scrambling code. For inner cells,
perform scrambling code planning as follows: Engineers need to understand the planning
rules and resource allocation for scrambling codes. Generally, the planning rules are
consistent with the planning rules at the initial phase. If some scrambling code resources are
reserved at the initial phase for capacity expansion, engineers need to determine whether the
reserved resources can be used for this time.

5. Neighboring cell planning:

For an outer cell, add the newly-deployed intra-frequency inner cells at this site and
neighboring sites to the intra-frequency neighboring cell list, and add the newly-deployed
inter-frequency inner cells at this site and neighboring sites to the inter-frequency neighboring
cell list.

For an inner cell, use the intra- and inter-frequency neighboring cell list of the corresponding
outer cell that works on the same frequency and in the same sector. At the same time, replace
the inner cell with its outer cell on the list.

For neighboring cells in which the AAS Vertical Multiple Sectors for UMTS feature is not
enabled, the neighboring cell planning is affected by feature activation (The network topology
changes after feature activation). Add corresponding intra- and inter-frequency inner cells in
the intra- and inter-frequency neighboring cell list.
NOTE

l If the intra- and inter-frequency neighboring cell list cannot accommodate more cells, remove cells
that have the lowest priority at the bottom of these lists.
l In RAN14.0 (SRAN7.0) and later, each cell can be configured with 64 neighboring cells by using
the neighboring cell extension algorithm.

8.3.3.2 Network Planning

The impact of this feature on inter-carrier networking policies must be considered. The
detailed cases are as follows:

1. Multi-carrier splitting
When multiple carriers are split, the previous networking policies can be used. The
splitting angle and power specifications of the multiple carriers must be the same to
ensure the same coverage of the inner and outer cells after the splitting. In this case,
DRD failures caused by different coverage can be avoided.
However, this spitting mode will cause strong intra-frequency interference and affect call
drop-related KPIs.
2. Partial-carrier splitting
This carrier splitting mode reduces intra-frequency interference.

According to different original policies, different multi-carrier policies should be used. The
details are as follows:

WCDMA RAN
AAS Feature Parameter Description 8 Engineering Guidelines

l When the original policies are random camping and HSDPA UE number-based
balancing, and the AAS Vertical Multiple Sectors for UMTS feature is enabled, perform
the following operations in different states:
– In the idle state:
Enable the inter-frequency fast reselection and set IdleSintersearch to 127.
– In the access state:
Disable blind handover-based RAB DRDs from the non-split carriers to the split
carriers to avoid DRD failures caused by different coverage.
Retain blind handover-based RAB DRDs from the split carriers to non-split
carriers.
Retain blind handover-based RAB DRDs among neighboring frequencies at split
carriers or non-split carriers.
– In the connected state:
Enable the measurement-based inter-frequency load handovers from non-split
carriers to split carriers to avoid DRD failures caused by different coverage.
Retain blind handover-based inter-frequency load handovers from split carriers to
non-split carriers.
Retain blind handover-based inter-frequency load handovers among neighboring
cell frequencies at split carriers or non-split carriers.
– For the DC feature:
It is recommended that neighboring frequency cells with the same split carriers or
non-split carriers form a DC group.
l When the original policies are preferred camping F1 and HSDPA UE number-based
balancing, and the AAS Vertical Multiple Sectors for UMTS feature is enabled (split
non-camping carriers to avoid impacts on CS KPIs and user experience), take the
following operations in different states:
– In the idle state:
Retain the camping policy. Enable UEs to preferentially camp on F1.
– In the access state:
Retain the blind handover-based RAB DRDs from F1 to non-split carriers (with the
same coverage areas). Use service-based RRC redirection from F1 to split carriers.
Retain the blind handover-based RAB DRDs among the split carriers.
– In the connected state:
Enable the measurement-based inter-frequency load handovers from non-split
carriers to split carriers.
Retain blind handover-based inter-frequency load handovers from split carriers to
non-split carriers.
Retain blind handover-based inter-frequency load handovers among split carriers or
non-split carriers.
– For the DC feature:
It is recommended that neighboring frequency cells with the same split carriers or
non-split carriers form a DC group.

NOTE

l In RAN15.0 (SRAN8.0) or earlier, when the policy in the connected state (Cell PCH or Cell FACH)
is applied, the effect of service-based RRC redirection is not satisfactory. Therefore, when the policy
in the connected state is used, disable state transition or split all carriers.
l The Service Steering and Load Sharing in CELL_FACH State feature in RAN15.1 (SRAN8.1) can
ensure the service-based RRC redirection effect when the policy in the connected state is used.

8.3.3.3 Hardware Planning

Because new local cells are created after the Vertical Multiple Sectors feature is activated, you
must consider specifications of baseband processing units and license limitations. Before you
activate this feature, perform the following operations:
l Obtain NodeB configurations, including configurations of baseband processing units,
configurations of uplink and downlink baseband resource groups, and the NodeB
software version.
l At least one week before feature activation for the target cell, collect the quantity of
signaling resources and uplink/downlink channel elements (CEs) consumed. Then,
calculate the highest CE and signaling resource consumption in a day.
l Estimate the quantity of signaling resources and CEs that will be consumed in a day after
feature activation.
l Check the specifications of baseband signal processing boards. If necessary, expand their
capacity.
l Check the number of cells allowed by the license to use this feature.

8.3.4 Deployment

8.3.4.1 Requirements
The license that controls this feature must be purchased and activated before feature
activation, the license sales unit is per AARU.

8.3.4.6 Activation Observation

Perform the following operations after the Vertical Multiple Sectors feature was activated:

l Check whether any alarms were falsely generated.

l Run the NodeB MML command DSP ULOCELL to check whether each pair of split
inner and outer cells is successfully set up.
l Run the NodeB MML commands DSP VRETSUBUNIT, DSP SECTOR, and DSP
ULOCELL to query the status of virtual RET subunits, sectors, and cells, respectively.

8.3.5 Performance Monitoring

After feature activation, check the values of the counters listed in Table 8-10 to determine
performance gains provided by this feature.

frequency hard handover attempts x 100%

8.3.6 Parameter Optimization

After the AAS Vertical Multiple Sectors for UMTS feature is enabled, the call completion rate
and call drop rate will be affected, especially the CS and PS call drop rate that may increase
by 10% to 20% in certain scenarios.

WCDMA RAN
AAS Feature Parameter Description 8 Engineering Guidelines

To avoid abnormal coverage or strong interference after the AAS Vertical Multiple Sectors for
UMTS feature is enabled, use the fixed outer cell tilt and ensure that the absolute pilot power
of the outer cell remains the same so that outer cell coverage remains the same. Set the tilt
difference between the outer cell and inner cell to maximum DT value (5° for the AAU3902).
Therefore, do not optimize the preceding parameters.

8.3.7 Troubleshooting
l Fault symptom
The feature fails to be enabled or this feature is configured but is ineffective.
l Solution
– Check whether the same AAS module is configured with any feature that is
mutually exclusive with the AAS Vertical Multiple Sectors for UMTS feature. For
details, see 6 Related Features.
– Check whether ALM-26532 RF Unit Hardware Fault is generated on the same AAS
module. If so, the AAS Vertical Multiple Sectors for UMTS feature fails to be
enabled.
l Fault symptom
After the feature is enabled, KPIs deteriorate.
l Solution
Observe the KPIs after the feature is enabled. If KPIs deteriorate, take the same KPI
optimization methodology as for common sites.

8.4 Deployment of AAS Dividual Tilts by Carrier for

UMTS

8.4.1 Application Suggestions

Use the AAS Dividual Tilts by Carrier for UMTS feature when the following conditions are
met:
l The operator has two frequencies serving the same mode in the same frequency band.

l Traffic near the cell center is dense.

8.4.2 Required Information

The required information is the same as that for the AAS Dividual Tilts by UL/DL for UMTS
feature. For details, see 8.3.2 Required Information.

8.4.3 Planning

8.4.3.1 RF Planning
Before deploying this feature, make a traffic map.

Conduct a network planning simulation test based on the traffic map. Determine the optimal
capacity by adjusting the tilts.

WCDMA RAN
AAS Feature Parameter Description 8 Engineering Guidelines

8.4.3.2 Network Planning

After the tilts are adjusted, multiple carriers should not share the coverage. Therefore, plan the
networking policies after the feature is enabled.

l When the original policies are random camping and HSDPA UE number-based
balancing, and the AAS Dividual Tilts by Carrier for UMTS feature is enabled, take the
following operations in different states:
– In the idle state:
Enable the inter-frequency fast reselection and set IdleSintersearch to 127.
– In the access state:
Small-tilt carriers cover large areas but large-tilt carriers cover small areas.
Therefore, blind handover-based RAB DRDs from large-tilt carriers to small-tilt
carriers are allowed but the reverse DRDs are not allowed.
– In the connected state:
Small-tilt carriers cover large areas but large-tilt carriers cover small areas.
Therefore, blind handover-based inter-frequency handovers from large tilt carriers
to small tilt carriers are allowed. However, in the reverse direction, only
measurement-based inter-frequency load handovers are allowed.
l When the original policies are preferred camping F1 and HSDPA UE number-based
balancing, and the AAS Dividual Tilts by Carrier for UMTS feature is enabled (increase
tilts of non-camping carriers to avoid impacts on CS KPIs and user experience), take the
following operations in different states:
– In the idle state:
Retain the camping policy. Enable UEs to preferentially camp on F1.
– In the access state:
Carrier F1 covers a large area. Therefore, from F1 to other carriers, only service
based-RRC redirections are allowed.
– In the connected state:
From F1 to other carriers, only measurement-based inter-frequency load handovers
are allowed. In the reverse direction, blind handover-based inter-frequency
handovers are allowed.
NOTE

In RAN15.0 (SRAN8.0) or earlier, when the policy in the connected state (Cell PCH or Cell FACH) is
applied, the effect of service-based RRC redirection is not satisfactory. Therefore, when the policy in the
connected state is used, disable state transition.

8.4.3.3 Hardware Planning

The AAU3902 must be configured.

8.4.4 Deployment

8.4.4.1 Requirements

l Solution
Observe the KPIs after this feature is enabled. If KPIs deteriorate, take the same KPI
optimization method as that in common sites.

8.5 Deployment of AAS Virtual Four Uplink Channels for

UMTS (Vertical)

8.5.1 Application Suggestions

Use the AAS Virtual Four Uplink Channels for UMTS feature when the following conditions
are met:
l The uplink load of the target cell has reached or exceeded the uplink load threshold
(70%) for capacity expansion.
l The traffic distribution is almost even before uplink beam splitting and there is traffic
near the site.
l The current downtilt is less than or equal to 10°, and the electrical downtilt is less than or
equal to 7° after the AAU is installed.

8.5.2 Required Information

The required information is the same as that for the AAS Dividual Tilts by UL/DL for UMTS
feature. For details, see 8.3.2 Required Information.

8.5.3 Planning

8.5.3.1 RF Planning
To avoid the impact on the neighboring cell coverage capacity after the AAS Virtual Four
Uplink Channels for UMTS (Vertical) feature is enabled, set the tilts as follows: If the
downtilt is configured to α1 when this feature is enabled, that is, the tilts of both the downlink
beam and the outer uplink beam are α1, the inner uplink beam with a tilt of α2 will be
automatically generated after this feature takes effect, and α2 is equal to α1 plus 5°.
When the mechanical downtilt is 0°, the cell downtilt α1 equals the electrical downtilt. If the
feature is enabled when α1 is greater than the maximum AAU electrical downtilt minus 5°, α2
will be fixed to the maximum AAU electrical downtilt, and the subtraction of α1 from α2 will
be less than 5°. In theory, a smaller difference between α1 and α2 indicates stronger
correlation between two uplink beams, resulting in feature performance deterioration.
Therefore, you are advised not to enable this feature in cells where the difference between α1
and α2 is less than 4° because the feature performance deteriorates significantly in this
situation.
It is recommended that this feature be enabled when the cell electrical downtilt is less than or
equal to 7° to yield the best performance. When the cell electrical downtilt is between 7° and
8°, the difference between α1 and α2 is greater than 4° but less than 5°, and the capacity gains
of AAS Virtual Four Uplink Channels for UMTS (Vertical) will decrease slightly. When the
cell electrical downtilt is greater than 8°, the difference between α1 and α2 will be less than
4°, and the feature performance will deteriorate significantly.
For details about the tilt capability of the AAU3902, see AAU3902 Hardware Description.

8.5.3.3 Hardware Planning

An uplink resource group supports three four-antenna cells and six RX channels, which is not
related to the number of baseband boards.

Activating the AAS Virtual Four Uplink Channels for UMTS (Vertical) feature increases
uplink cell capacity but affects counters related to uplink cell load and uplink cell signaling
overhead. Therefore, perform the following operations before you activate this feature:

l Obtain NodeB configurations, including configurations of baseband processing units,

configurations of uplink and downlink baseband resource groups, and the NodeB
software version. One 4R cell consumes four uplink IQ resources. The 1.25 GHz
frequency contains 10 IQ resources and 2.5 GHz contains 20 IQ resources. Three 4R
cells set up on an AAS module consumes 12 uplink IQ resources. Then the negotiated
rate of the optical module should be 2.5 Gbit/s. Therefore, the 1.25 Gbit/s optical module
does not support setup of three 4R cells.
l At least one week before feature activation for the target cell, collect the quantity of
signaling resources and uplink CEs consumed. Then, calculate the highest CE and
signaling resource consumption in a day.
l Estimate the quantity of signaling resources and CEs that will be consumed in a day after
feature activation.
l Check the specifications of baseband processing units. If necessary, expand their
capacity.

8.5.4 Deployment

8.5.4.1 Requirements
Purchase the license for WRFD-261101 AAS Virtual Four Uplink Channels for UMTS
(Vertical) by taking an AARU module as a sales unit.

The feature requires that the baseband processing unit support 4R. For details about the 4R
specifications on each baseband processing unit, see BBU Hardware Description.

The configuration of the AAS Virtual Four Uplink Channels for UMTS feature is similar to
that of the 4-Way Receive Diversity by Inter-Band Assistance feature. Uplink resource groups
