5 WAYS TO

KILL EMPLOYEE
MOTIVATION
1. Calling Employees Out In Public
“Praise in public criticize in private.” - Vince Lombardi

There's no reason to put people on the spot publicly. Don't try to teach people a lesson or
make an example of them—they aren't children.

Instead, pull them aside and deal with the situation in private. Public embarrassment can
only serve to make employees scornful and ruin the office environment.

2. Outsource To The Cheapest Bidder

I’ll speak from personal experience. I was working at a so"ware company where we were
behind on our unrealistic deadlines, and management’s genius idea was to outsource the
work. I don’t have a problem with remote working, as long as it’s managed properly, and
done well.

Usually in these situations though, a manager will look for the lowest bidder from the most
under-developed country.

Plus no one stopped to consider that our in-house developers might need to actually train
these people and guide them through the source code, taking their precious time away from
more important things…like developing.

Pro Tip: Read this incredible post. If you’re so passionate about hiring developers overseas,
then please don’t just go for the lowest bidder, and use a service like Toptal.

3. Lack Of Communication
According to a study conducted several years ago by Magna Leadership Solutions, the
number-one problem recognized by both management and employees is communication.

It is absolutely critical to be as direct, to the point and concise as possible. Vagueness is all
too common in the workplace.

Your attitude while talking is also important. It’s not just your words that convey a message,
it’s all of you. If you slouch or avoid eye contact, people will get the impression you don’t
want to communicate with them. Give employees your undivided attention, and be clear.

4. Not Providing Work/Life Boundaries

Despite what some companies think, all employees have a life outside of their work. Not
drawing adequate boundaries between the two leads to stress, friction, and burnout. Make
sure your employees know where their job ends and their life begins.

5. Non-Flexible Schedules
Once upon a time, we all worked 9-to-5. That was mostly due to the fact that we didn’t have
the technology to support otherwise. Ensure your company is leveraging technology to give
your employees flexibility in when, where, and how they do their work.
