P
atient data is exploding. According to the latest
report from The International Agency for Research
on Cancer (IARC), the global cancer burden is
estimated to have risen to 18.1 million new cases and 9.6
million deaths, in 2018. Such an alarming increase has
led to a high rise in the volume of patient data. Over 70%
of cancer patient data is unstructured, meaning it is not
organized in a manner that is easily retrievable or make
effective use. This data is generated in pathology reports
and tissue images, physician notes, radiology narratives
and x-ray images, scanned documents, genomics lab
results, chat streams and patient medical history
imported into EHRs and other ancillary systems.
These unstructured data sets or free-text records capture
patients’ entire medical history and relevant treatments.
Thereby, it becomes crucial for healthcare and clinical
research centres to access these large volumes of data and
convert them into meaningful and actionable insights.
But due to the lack of system interoperability and
systematic process, these healthcare and clinical research
centres are unable to perform such actions in a timely
and cost-effective manner. This impacts the quality of
patient care and the health systems bottom line.

many of the largest cancer registries and provides
quality metrics around surgical tumour removals and

pathology and cancer informatics solutions that process
over 23 million reports a year, accounting for over 40% of

has built one of the largest tissue image libraries, called
Whole Slide Images (WSIs), in the entire world which
