Shown below is an old rubric that I have used for a "Fish Aquarium Project" that I have done as a summative

assessment
at the end of the first quarter with my 6th grade math students. At this point, we have already taught decimal and fraction
operations, integers, and ratios/rates/unit rate skills, which is what this project assesses. In the past this rubric was
inefficient because it was too vague in the expectations I had for my students. Also, with such a large range in point
values, it made grading very subjective and left students wondering why they got a 3/10 instead of a 5/10 or 7/10 on a
portion of the project where they only made a small mistake. My revised rubric is very specific and clear in
expectations. It offers a point value range of only 3 points, so there should be no deliberation about how a student
received the grade they did.

Because of the hurricane and so many missed instructional days, I was not able to implement this project yet this year,
which worked out for the better in this case! I plan to incorporate this project at the end of the year after SCReady, as a
summative, end of the year assessment. I will use the new rubric I developed and assign it in Google Classroom, being
sure to make a copy for each student. While students complete their rough draft, they should be referring to the rubric to
assure that they have followed all the guidelines in order to receive the highest grade possible. Before getting their rough
draft checked over and approved by the teacher, all students should have a peer check over their work using the rubric. I
will provide a hard copy for this process, so students can check off guidelines from the rubric, write feedback, and show
their math work as they check over their classmate's calculations. After students have a peer check over their rough draft
and I have approved it, they can complete and submit their final shopping list. Once they've done so, I will score their
rubric on Google Classroom, leave appropriate feedback for their work, and "return" it in GC so they can so their final
grade and comments.
