October 27, 2019—30th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Hello everyone!
Last weekend I was visited by a Texan and he marveled at the fall colors. As we traveled in and out of
Whitewater, the weather and trees were magnificent! God’s artistry is powerful and yet fleeting. You
would think that the Lord would keep this autumn tapestry around for a long time but he doesn’t. It
only lives on for a long time in pictures or our memories.
The quickness of the fall colors is also a reminder of our own transient stay on earth. This can be a
source of wistfulness or nostalgia. It can also, with the help of the Lord, bring us wisdom. To enjoy
today for its beauty and worth and thanking God for it is helpful. This balances out worries about
yesterday and tomorrow. This day to day conversation with the Lord can keep us from missing the
wonders that occur each day, giving us that thankful heart needed to praise God.
As you know, however, this is easier said than done. We get caught up in all that needs to be done,
fussing about tomorrow’s issues and feeling guilty about
yesterday’s faults. This is where we want to ask the Holy Spirit to
enter in this week. Holy Spirit, help me to ask God for mercy and
forgiveness where I need it. We are asking the Lord’s grace to be
attentive to our need for God’s help, in order to see his action in our
lives. This is key when we want to be self-righteous like the Pharisee
in the Gospel. Because he forgot that God helped him do all the
good things he does, he was judgmental and arrogant. We ask that
the Holy Spirit always keep us aware of how much help God gives
us.

El fin de semana pasado tuve la visita de un tejano y se maravilló de los colores del otoño. Mientras
llegábamos y salíamos de Whitewater, ¡el clima y los árboles estaban magníficos! El arte de Dios es
poderoso y sin embargo fugaz. Se podría pensar que el Señor mantendría este tapiz de otoño
durante mucho tiempo, pero no lo hace. Solo vive por mucho tiempo en fotografías o en nuestros
recuerdos.
La rapidez de los colores del otoño es también un recordatorio de nuestra propia estancia
transitoria en la tierra. Esto puede ser una fuente de melancolía o nostalgia. También puede, con la
ayuda del Señor, traernos sabiduría. Disfrutar el día de hoy por su belleza y valor y agradecerle a
Dios por ello nos ayuda. Esto equilibra las preocupaciones sobre ayer y mañana. Esta conversación
diaria con el Señor puede evitar que nos perdamos las maravillas que ocurren cada día, dándonos
un corazón agradecido que es necesario para alabar a Dios.
Sin embargo, como saben, es más fácil decirlo que hacerlo. Estamos tan metidos en todo lo que hay
que hacer, preocupados por los problemas de mañana y sintiéndonos culpables por nuestras fallas
de ayer. Aquí es donde queremos pedirle al Espíritu Santo que entre esta semana. Espíritu Santo,
ayúdame a pedirle a Dios misericordia y perdón donde lo necesite. Pedimos la gracia del Señor para
estar atentos a nuestra necesidad de la ayuda de Dios, para poder ver su acción en nuestras vidas.
Esto es clave cuando queremos ser justos como el fariseo en el Evangelio. Porque olvidó que Dios lo
ayudó a hacer todas las cosas buenas que hizo, fue crítico y arrogante. Pedimos que el Espíritu
Santo nos mantenga siempre conscientes de cuánta ayuda nos da Dios.

During the month of October, you will have an opportunity to remember your loved ones who have
died by writing their names in the Book of the Dead. The book is located on a table next to the
baptismal font. The people listed in this book will be remembered with prayers during the month of November.

 ADORACIÓN EUCARÍSTICA
La Adoración Eucarística tendrá lugar el martes 5 de noviembre en la capilla lateral de Nuestra
Señora de Guadalupe de 8:00 a.m. a 5:30 p.m. Noviembre es el mes de las Pobres Almas, por lo
que en la adoración se ofrecerá un momento especial para orar por nuestros queridos familiares y
amigos fallecidos, especialmente aquellos que figuran en nuestro Libro de Recuerdo. Los Padres del
Concilio Vaticano II mencionaron que la iglesia ha honrado la memoria de los difuntos desde el
principio (Lumen Gentium 50), por lo que es muy apropiado que lo hagamos, especialmente en noviembre.
Para asegurarse de que alguien esté presente durante todo el tiempo de adoración, se le pide que se

How to Pray
30th Sunday of Ordinary Time

Reflection Questions:
• The reading from the Wisdom of Ben Sira assures us that “the
prayer of the lowly pierces the clouds” and it remains before the
Lord until it is answered. If the cries of the poor, oppressed, and
vulnerable will always be heard and answered by God, how are
we to respond to them? What comfort can you give to someone
who feels as if their prayers will never be answered?
• At the end of his second letter to Timothy, Paul is coming to terms
with his imminent martyrdom. He compares himself to an athlete
who has competed well and will receive a crown as his prize. In
what ways are we called to be like athletes in our life of faith?
What does it mean to “compete well?” How do you know if you’ve
competed well?
• Jesus tells a parable illustrating how we should pray. Why does he choose a tax collector as an example of
righteousness in prayer? Why do we need to practice humility in prayer? How do you pray?

 EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
Eucharistic Adoration will take
place Tuesday, November 5, in Our
Lady of Guadalupe side chapel from
8:00 AM to 5:30 PM. November is the
month of the Poor Souls so adoration
will offer a special time to pray for our
beloved deceased relatives and friends,
especially those listed in our Book of
Remembrance. The Fathers of the Second Vatican
Council mentioned that the church has honored the
memory of the dead from the beginning (Lumen
Gentium 50) so it is very fitting that we do so,
especially in November.
To ensure that someone is present during the
entire time of adoration, you are asked to sign up for
an hour of prayer. A sign-up sheet is in the
vestibule of the church or you may call Mary, 473-
6163, to schedule a time. In addition to scheduled
participants, everyone is encouraged to come and
pray as your schedule allows. Even a short time of
prayer before Jesus is very special and powerful and
the souls in purgatory rely totally on our prayers for
them.
Included in our adoration prayers are prayers for
the requests written in the Book of Intercessions,
located near the statue of the Blessed Mother and
this month we also include those whose names are
written in the Book of Remembrance.
On the first Sunday of every
month, we are invited to share
with others some of the materi-
al blessings God has given us.
After the usher has passed your
pew for the offertory collection, you are invited to
bring your bag of groceries and/or money to the
front of the altar. A basket will be there for the
money. Next Sunday is SHARE SUNDAY.

Saturday 8:30-2. Or leave items in the donation bin in
the front vestibule, open 24/7. No mattresses or non-
flat screen TV’s.
