a. Hypothesis – is a tentative statement about the relationship
between two or more variables. It is specific, testable prediction about what you expect to happen in a study. It is what the researchers predict see, and it does not have to be correct. It is the goal of a research, to determine whether this guess is correct or wrong. (Kendra Cherry, 2019)
b. There is a need to test hypothesis because; it is a critical part of
any exploration. It represents what researchers expect to find in a study or experiment. The result of hypothesis testing is the truth or knowledge discovery about something you wanted to know. It helps us better understand how different aspects of the natural world relate to one another.
c. Null hypothesis, Ho – it is a statement about the population that
either is believed to be true or is used to put forth an argument unless it can be shown incorrect beyond a reasonable doubt.
Alternative hypothesis, Ha – it is a claim about a population that is
contradictory to Ho and what we conclude when we reject the null hypothesis.
d. To formulate null hypothesis Ho, one must take note that it always have the equal (=) sign in it.
To formulate an alternative hypothesis, one must take note that it
never has a symbol with an equal (=) in it.
Examples of Null and alternative hypothesis
1. Ho: No more than 75% of registered voters in Daet, Camarines
Norte voted in the last national election.
Ha: More than 75% of registered voters in Daet, Camarines
Norte voted in the last national election. 2. Ho: No more than 50% of first year civil engineering students in Camarines Norte State College was STEM tracking.
Ha: More than 50% of first year civil engineering students in
Camarines Norte State College was STEM tracking.
3. Ho: 95% of civil engineering graduates in Camarines Norte
State College finish their degree within 5 years.
Ha: More than 5% of civil engineering graduates in Camarines
Norte State College finish their degree within 5 years.
4. Ho: Not more than 3% of the examinees for a driver’s license in
the Philippines failed to pass the exam.
Ha: More than 3% of the examinees for a driver’s license in the
Philippines failed to pass the exam.
5. Ho: The compressive strength of concrete confined with
Pineapple fibers is significantly the same with the unconfined concrete.
Ha: The compressive strength of concrete confined with
Pineapple fibers is significantly different with the unconfined concrete.
e. Procedure in choosing a statistical test.
Step 1. Determine the number of independent variables covary with the dependent variables.
Step 2. Determine the level of measurement of the independent
variables.
Step 3: Determine the level of measurement of the dependent
variable.
Step 4. Determine whether the observations are independent or
dependent.
Step 5. Determine whether the hypothesis being tested is
comparative or relationship hypothesis. Step 6. Determine if you are comparing populations to populations, a sample to population, or you are making comparison between two or more samples.
