TEACHER’S LEARNING PLAN IN GRADE 9 MATHEMATICS

Activity No. 1 (2nd Quarter)

Activity Title: Direct Variation
Learning Target/s: At the end of the lesson, the students CAN:
1. solve situations that involve inverse variation.
1.1 distinguish if the relation is a direct variation or not;
1.2 identify the constant in the direct variation; and
1.3 derive the equation for the direct variation.

I. Essential Ideas

Direct Variation

When two variable quantities have a constant (unchanged) ratio,

their relationship is called a direct variation.
It is said that one variable "varies directly" as the other.

The constant ratio is called the constant of variation.

The formula for direct variation is y = kx,

where k is the constant of variation.
"y varies directly as x"
Illustrative Example: .
If y varies directly as x, and y = 8 when x = 12, find y when x = 3.

Plan of Attack:
Substitute the given values into the equation y = kx.

y = kx
8 = k(12)
Solve for k.
2 =k
3

Then replace k with its value in the equation y = kx to get y.

y = kx

y = (3)(3)

II. Learning Experiences
A. Clarifying Understanding
Directions: Solve the following problems involving direct variation.

1. If y varies directly as x, and y = 16 when x = 4, find y when x = 5.

2. If y varies directly as x, and y = 8 when x = 2, find x when y = 12.

B. Processing Questions
1. How will you describe the change of x and y in a direct variation?

2. How do you solve for the constant of variation in the direct variation?

C. Framing Concepts
Directions: Complete the statement below by filling in the boxes the STEPS you
followed in solving situations involving direct variation. You can add more
boxes if necessary.

D. Lifelong Learning
Directions: Choose only one question and reflect on it.
1. The constant of variation k plays a vital role in solving problems involving inverse
variation. As a Claretian student, you are also responsible in fulfilling a very
important role in your community. What do you think are these important roles in
your life? Enumerate three (3) roles and explain how you are able to accomplish those
roles.
E. Mastery Test
Directions: Solve the following problems involving inverse variation.

1. If y varies directly as x, and y = 32 when x = 8, find y when x = 2.

2. If y varies directly as x, and y = 28 when x = 14, find x when y = 10.
