ASEAN – Was established in AUGUST 8, 1967 through a Bangkok Declaration and is

a regional organization created to promote political and economic cooperation and


regional stability among the countries in the south East Asian region.

ASEAN aims to accelerate the economic growth, social progress, cultural


development, protection of peace and stability of the region

MEMBERS – 10 Members States

Founding members – Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand

BRUNEI – JANUARY 07, 1984

VIETNAM – JULY 28, 1995

LAOS – JULY 23, 1997

MYANMAR – JULY 23, 1997

CAMBODIA – APRIL 30, 1999

ASEAN CHARTER – Refers to a legal document that provides the legal status and
institutional framework for cooperation with the ASEAN region and towards the
formation of the ASEAN community. Entered into force on December 15,2008

Charter establishes the rules-based systems and the structures for the conduct
of ASEAN affairs.

ASEAN VISION 2020 – Adopted by the ASEAN leaders on the 30th anniversary of
ASEAN as a concert of Southeast Asian nations, outward looking, living in peace,
stability and prosperity etc.

9th ASEAN (October 2003) – The ASEAN members resolved that an ASEAN
Community shall be established.

12th ASEAN (January 2007) – The leaders affirmed their strong commitment to
accelerate the establishment of an ASEAN Community by 2015 and signed the Cebu
Declaration on the acceleration of an ASEAN Community by 2015
THE ASEAN THREE PILLARS

1. ASEAN Political-Security Community – To establish a rules-based community


promoting political development and stability in the region.

2. ASEAN Economic Community – economic integration to establish ASEAN as


single market and production base.

3. ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community – The human dimension of ASEAN


cooperation addressing the region’s aspiration to lift the quality of life of its
people.

The ASEAN ECONOMIC COMMUNITY BLUEPRINT 2025 – Transform ASEAN into a


single market and production base fully integrated into the global economy. Adopted
by ASEAN leaders at the 27th ASEAN summit on November 2015 laying down the
strategic measures for the AEC from 2016 to 2025 as follows:
1. A highly integrated and cohesive economy
2. A competitive, innovative, and dynamic ASEAN
3. Enhanced connectivity and sectorial cooperation
4. A resilient, inclusive, people oriented and people centered region
5. A global ASEAN
The ASEAN FREE TRADE AREA – Is a trade bloc agreement which seeks to remove
obstacles to free trade among AMSs through the abolition of tariffs on traded goods
And the scrapping of quantitative restrictions and non-tariff barriers that limit the entry
of imports.
ESTABLISHMENT OF AFTA – At the 4th ASEAN Summit held in Singapore on
January 28, 1992

COMMON EFFECTIVE PREFERENTIAL TARIFF – Is the main implementing


mechanism of AFTA. This means that AMSs shall have common effective tariffs
among themselves in AFTA but the level
- Is an agreed preferential tariff applied to goods originating from and traded
between AMS.
- Cover all products except unprocessed agricultural products
- Was signed at Singapore on January 28, 1992
E - ASEAN FRAMEWORK AGREEMENT – Signed during the fourth ASEAN informal
Summit 22-25 November 2000, Singapore.
OBJECTIVES:
- Enhance competitiveness of the information and Communications Technology
(sector in ASEAN).

- Promote cooperation between the public and private sectors in realizing e-


ASEAN
- Promote and liberalize trade in ICT products, services and investment.

ASEAN Integration System of Preferences (AISP) Scheme for CLMV Countries
