Perform a gauge and scraper run. It is recommended that this be done with the
following assembly: Mills & Stabiliser sized to suit casing drift.
Alternatively, full gauge stabilisers may be used in place of the watermelon mills and
the casing scraper omitted, should a substantial amount of rotation be required (e.g.
when drilling cement). The assembly stabilisation points should be positioned such
that it simulates the stiffness of the complete Trackmaster™ system. Depending upon
the type of MWD system that is to be used, it may also be prudent to evaluate the
hydraulic impact of the MWD at the operating flow rates - this is particularly
important in deep hole applications. It is then possible to alter any system aspect prior
to running with the system.
Note: It is strongly recommended that if possible the scraper be run past setting depth, by 50
Ft, then pulled back and circulation commenced. This is to ensure any debris is
pushed below the setting depth and not circulated back up past the scraper.
The Trackmaster™ can be set at any depth. It is set hydraulically therefore there is no
requirement to interact with a cement or bridge plug to initiate the setting of the whipstock.
As with any whipstock sidetrack the Trackmaster™ system should be set between 2 casing collars.
This is to ensure integrity between the anchoring packer and the milling and the drilling assemblies.
Casing coupling positions may be pre-verified using a CCL or from the casing tally (if this is
sufficiently accurate). Should a CCL be used, correlation between drill pipe and wireline depth will
be necessary.
The whipstock is usually orientated with a MWD. If the hole angle is less than 5
degrees then a gyro may be used in conjunction with a UBHO sub. It should be noted
that newer MWD tools can read at angles of less than 5 degrees but this should be
checked and evaluated on an individual well basis.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Approximately 8 gallons of hydraulic oil will be required on rig floor to fill up the
whipstock and Running Tool if this is a high temperature hole.
Safety note: ensure the driller is aware that when the by-pass valve closes he will be
pumping against a closed valve.
RUNNING PROCEDURE
1 Pick-up whipstock
Pick up the whipstock with tugger from catwalk. A certified lifting eye is at back of
whipstock. Place the sling around the anchor not around the protector sleeve. Set the
system in the rotary table. As a safety back up make sure the BOP rams are shut and
leave the tugger connected.
Bolt the Mill nose to the Whip Assembly. Connect hydraulic Line.
Run the whipstock assembly below the rotary table to the top of running tool. Break
the connection and top-up with hydraulic oil. Insert the floating piston into the tool.
Scribe the whipstock face to the MWD or UHBO for reference purposes.
Make up the remainder of the BHA and run in the hole under controlled conditions, 3 minutes per
stand. Watch the weight indicator carefully and record up-weights regularly. Monitor the trip-tank
for the correct fill up. Extra caution should be observed when at the BOP’s and casing cross-overs
etc.
Standard Assembly:
Fill the pipe slowly (10 spm). Take up & down Weights.
Slack off to neutral weight at setting depth.
Once at setting depth, begin circulating to obtain MWD toolface survey turn pumps off. Turn
assembly as required to obtain desired orientation and re-survey. Once correctly oriented, cycle
the pumps to achieve the closed position on the Multi Cycle By-pass Valve. Once the valve is
closed reduce the pump rate and slowly pressure up to 3,500 psi. Hold and maintain this pressure
Note: High pressures may be experienced during the setting sequence. All personnel
must be made aware and all necessary precautions taken.
Slack off 25-30k lbs and then overpull 25-30k lbs to verify the anchor / packer is correctly set.
Pick-up 50,000 lbs overpull and shear bolt. Monitor for the pressure drop as the
hydraulic hose ruptures.
11 Start Milling
Lower the assembly to just above the whipstock. Determine the free-rotating torque. Begin rotation
and lower assembly until torque is taken. Mill through the window and then drill a rathole, usually
Note: When the mill reaches the end of the whip face the quality of the
cement/formation must be assessed. If the ROP in the formation is unusually
high, ie. greater than 20 Ft / Hr, then milling and washing should be kept to a
minimum in case the formation in the window area is washed out or made
unstable.
12 Milling Completed
Check the passage of the mills through the window with different parameters, recording any drag
Circulate bottoms up with the mill above the window then pull out of the hole. A Formation Integrity
Allowable mill wear across the 3 mills is: 3/8" under gauge on the lead and follow mill and 1/4"
Factors affecting the mill wear such as formation type and the length of rat hole drilled should be
14 Drilling Assembly
Make up and run in the hole with the required drilling assembly to drill ahead.
For information: Various steerable drilling systems have been used, without problems, in
conjunction with our whipstock systems. It has been observed that very occasionally a drilling
assembly requires to be orientated or turned to allow the drilling assembly to pass the whip face.
