Fred Gregory’s first time in
an aircraft didn’t take him off the
ground.
His father was not a pilot but
was a fan of airplanes, and pilots
regularly visited the family home
in Washington D.C. Benjamin Da-
vis Jr., the first African-American
general in the U.S. Air Force, of-
fered to take Gregory for a ride in
his airplane, and Gregory said his
father believed in saying yes to ev-
erything.
Gregory was five years old and
had to sit on two phone books in
order to see through the windows,
he said.
“I’m strapped in and as the pilot
is getting into the backseat, I hear a

he said.
On Gregory’s mother’s orders,

stead of a flight. But if his mother
wanted him to keep his feet on the

Taylor as its first ex-
ecutive director for
the $42 million Com-
muniversity.

her uniquely qualified for the job,
EMCC officials said in a state-
ment released Tuesday. The Com-
muniversity, which began classes
this fall, is a collaboration among
EMCC, Mississippi State Universi-
ty and the Mississippi Development
Authority focusing on the advance
manufacturing skills required by
local industries.
“Courtney brings a wealth of
knowledge and experience to the
position,” EMCC President Scott
Alsobrooks said. “She understands
the integral role community col-
leges play as intermediaries be-
tween local communities, econom-
ic developers and area industries.”

placing Raj Shaunak, who
is retiring.

Alabama’s strict abortion ban
Law would make performing an abortion at any
stage of pregnancy a felony punishable by up to
99 years or life in prison for the provider

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — A fed-
eral judge on Tuesday blocked Ala-
bama’s near-total abortion ban from
taking effect next month and called
the law — part of a wave of new abor-
tion restrictions by conservative
states — clearly unconstitutional.
U.S. District Judge Myron Thomp-
son issued a preliminary injunction
temporarily blocking Alabama from
enforcing the law that would make
performing an abortion a felony in al-
most all cases. The ruling came after
abortion providers sued to block the
law from taking effect Nov. 15. The
injunction was widely expected and
will remain in place until Thompson
decides the full case.
“Alabama’s abortion ban contra-
venes clear Supreme Court prece-
dent,” Thompson wrote in an accom-
panying opinion. “It violates the right
of an individual to privacy, to make
choices central to personal digni-
ty and autonomy. It diminishes the
capacity of women to act in society,
and to make reproductive decisions.
It defies the United States Constitu-
tion.”
Energized by new conservatives
on the U.S. Supreme Court, Alabama
and other conservative states have
attempted to enact new restrictions
on abortion in the hopes of getting
Supreme Court justices to reconsid-
er Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973
decision that legalized abortion na-
tionwide.
A number of states attempted to
ban abortion once a fetal heartbeat
is detected. The Alabama law went
further by attempting to ban almost
all abortions with no exceptions for
cases of rape and incest.
Passed by the Republican-led
legislature, the 2019 Alabama Hu-
man Life Protection Act would make
performing an abortion at any stage
of pregnancy a felony punishable by
up to 99 years or life in prison for the
abortion provider. The only excep-
tions would be when there is a seri-
ous health risk to the mother or the
fetus has a lethal anomaly that would
cause it to die shortly after birth.
None of the state bans has tak-
en effect. Some have already been
blocked, and elsewhere courts are
considering requests to put them on
hold while legal challenges play out.
“This is not only a victory for
the people of Alabama — it’s a vic-
tory for the entire nation. We said it
from the start: This ban is blatantly
unconstitutional, and we will fight
it every step of the way,” said Staci
Fox, president and CEO of Planned
Parenthood Southeast. Planned Par-
enthood was one of the groups that
sued to block the law.
Randall Marshall, executive di-
rector of the American Civil Liber-
ties Union of Alabama, said the deci-
sion was expected.
“Abortion remains legal in Ala-
bama. The state’s repeated attempts
to push abortion out of reach by en-
acting unconstitutional laws restrict-
ing abortions has already cost tax-
payers nearly 2 ½ million dollars,”

Tony Biffle died
Tuesday, which
probably doesn’t
qualify as news
in these parts, al-
though his passing
is worth noting
anywhere the value
of newspaper edito-
rials is appreciated.
For 21 years —
from 1994 until his
retirement in 2015 Slim Smith
at the 63 — Tony
wrote editorials for The Sun
Herald in Biloxi, winning
awards along the way, but oth-
erwise laboring in the kind of
obscurity common to the job.
Editorial writers are seldom geon, taking great offense to
credited for their work, which
appears as unsigned editorials
as the view not of the person
who writes them, but as the
newspaper’s official position.
The only story on his death
appeared in the newspaper to
which he devoted his career.
There was no mention of it on
local TV channels or in any
other newspaper in the state,
as far as I can tell.
Tony arrived at
The Sun Herald
at about the time
I was making my
exit, but in the two
years we shared a
newsroom — he in
the office held by a
long line of stellar
editorial writers
before him and me
in the corner of the
newsroom allot-
ted to the sports
department — it was easy to
see how seriously he viewed
his role.
Even in his early 40s, Tony
was sort of an office curmud-

and, most notably, Associated
Press style.
Perhaps — and this is just
a guess — he felt the weight
of those who held the position
of editorial writer before him,
men like Robert McHugh, who
had worked with legendary
Baltimore Sun opinion writer
H.L. Mencken, or Jim Lund,
he of the old-school green
eye-shades whose encyclope-
dic knowledge of the people,
events and culture of the Coast
empowered his editorials with
rare authority.
In the story on Tony’s pass-
ing, The Sun Herald made note
of just one of the thousands of
editorials he wrote over two-
plus decades – “The Power of
Prayer...and Plywood,” a rare
front-page editorial written the
day before Hurricane Katrina
smashed into the Coast.
In many ways, that editorial
was illustrative of Tony’s body
of work, combining as it did
his abilities to tap into readers’
emotions while appealing to
the practical realities. It was
not enough to stir emotions.
There had to be some practi-
cal way readers could — and
should — turn those emotions
into action.
In doing this, and doing it in
plain-spoken language, Tony
achieved the highest measure
of what it means to be an edito-
rial writer.
My last conversation with
Tony came as I left The Sun
Herald for California in the
spring of 1996, so I’ll make
no assumptions about how he
came to view his work by the
time he retired. I do know, at
age 63, he had not reached the
stage of decay — and certainly
not personal wealth — that
would have naturally dictated
an early retirement.
What I do know is that Tony
left the Sun Herald as it began
a precipitous decline, a fate
common to many, if not most,
newspapers, beginning around
the turn of the century.
Today, The Sun Herald
doesn’t even have an editorial
page, an astounding thought
given the newspaper’s long,
long history of brilliant editori-
al writing.
I cannot help but wonder
if Tony, so committed to his
craft, became disillusioned.
It takes a certain amount
of ego for anyone to play the
role of editorial writer — a
belief that you have some-
thing important to say and the
ability to say it articulately and
effectively.
And, sometimes, even when
they feel they have achieved
that goal, even the best editori-
al writers must wonder if their
work is in vain. Does it really
make a difference? With rare
exceptions, it is something the
editorial writer never really
knows.
So, what really, should the
death of an editorial writer in
Biloxi mean to the rest of us?
It means there is one less
voice trying to speak truth
to power. One less person
trying to capture the spirit of
a community. One less voice
hoping to make people think.
One less person attempting
to stir the conscience, inspire
an audience to action, sooth
the sorrows and celebrate the
successes of a community.

Mr. Slim Smith, shame on you!
Is there so little to write about in Columbus that
you have to pick on children’s art work? Children
learn by doing. Sure their first efforts might not
be perfect but to the child, he/she is working on a
masterpiece.
Did you think that one of these children might
be handicapped or disabled? They do the best they
can and are so happy to accomplish anything. So
are their parents and grandparents.
I am sorry that you can’t tell that the flower is
bigger than the house is because the child loves
flowers. I am sorry that the drab color combina-
tions explains how he/she is feeling today. They
like sunshine too.
You say “a good community newspaper is built
on its relationship with its readers.” This relation-
ship won’t last long if you pick on the community’s
budding artists.
Finally, I want you to know that this 87 year old
great grandmother has the most beautiful artwork
on her refrigerator!

Social media companies give advertisers an
unfair advantage in proliferating highly targeted,
misleading messages

SAN FRANCISCO — Twitter
is banning all political advertising
from its service, saying social me-
dia companies give advertisers an
unfair advantage in proliferating
highly targeted, misleading mes-
sages.
“While internet advertising is
incredibly powerful and very ef-
fective for commercial advertisers,
that power brings significant risks
to politics, where it can be used to
influence votes to affect the lives of
millions,” Twitter CEO Jack Dors-
ey said Wednesday in a series of
tweets announcing the new policy.
Facebook has taken fire since
it disclosed earlier in October that
it will not fact-check ads by politi-
cians or their campaigns, which
could allow them to lie freely. CEO
Mark Zuckerberg told Congress
last week that politicians have the
right to free speech on Facebook.
The issue suddenly arose in Sep-
tember when Twitter, along with
Facebook and Google, refused to
remove a misleading video ad from
President Donald Trump’s cam-
paign that targeted former Vice
President Joe Biden, a leading
Democratic presidential candidate.
In response, Democratic Sen.
Elizabeth Warren, another presi-
dential hopeful, ran her own ad on
Facebook taking aim at Zucker-
berg. The ad falsely claimed that
Zuckerberg endorsed President
Donald Trump for re-election, ac-
knowledging the deliberate false-
hood as necessary to make a point.
Critics have called on Facebook
to ban all political ads. These in-
clude CNN chief Jeff Zucker, who
recently called the company’s poli-
cy of allowing lies “absolutely ludi-
crous” and advised the social media
giant to sit out the 2020 election
until it can figure out something
better.
Google and Facebook did not
have immediate comments on Twit-
ter’s policy change.
Montana Gov. Steve Bullock, an-
other Democratic 2020 contender,
retweeted Dorsey’s announcement,
adding the comment, “Good. Your
turn, Facebook.”
Dorsey said the company is rec-
ognizing that advertising on social
media offers an unfair level of tar-
geting compared to other mediums.
It is not about free expression, he
asserted.
“This is about paying for reach.
And paying to increase the reach
of political speech has significant
ramifications that today’s demo-
cratic infrastructure may not be
prepared to handle,” he tweeted.
“It’s worth stepping back in order
to address.”
Twitter currently only allows
certified campaigns and organiza-
tions to run political ads for candi-
dates and issues. The latter tend to
advocate on broader issues such as
climate change, abortion rights and
immigration.
The company said it will make
some exceptions, such as allowing
ads that encourage voter turnout.
It will describe those in a detailed
policy it plans to release on Nov. 15.
Federal campaigns are expected
to spend the majority of advertis-
ing dollars on broadcast and cable
channels during the 2020 election,
according to advertising research
firm Kantar, and about 20% of the
total $6 billion in spending on dig-
ital ads.
Twitter’s policy will start on Nov.

family of Ray Gildea, an

nalists before Beard and
Easley were chosen, said
Tommy Anderson, MSU

Beard is from Lufkin,
Texas and studying bio-
medical engineering,
and Easley is a Starkville
native and a mechanical
engineering major. Both
said they have had oppor-
tunities for research at
MSU that they could not
have had elsewhere.

ery,” which is now at the
Air and Space Museum at

outcome is going to be,
but as you will find out,

Mississippi county has no
pharmacy
JACKSON — With the nationwide
closure of Fred’s Pharmacy, one Mis-
sissippi county is taking it really hard.
The residents of Kemper County
in east-central Mississippi now find
themselves without any pharmacy in
the entire county.
The Clarion Ledger reports resi-
dents will have to place and pick up
prescriptions at pharmacies in Merid-
ian or Philadelphia — about a 30-min-
ute drive to each one.
Mississippi Board of Pharmacy
President Ryan Harper says that will
be an issue for some of the state’s
most critical patients. He says pa-
tients on multiple prescriptions also
usually have a huge hurdle of having
access to reliable transportation.
Fred’s closed Oct. 18. It was lo-
cated in the county seat of Dekalb,
which had a population of just over
1,000 residents.

STARKVILLE — It’s been
over six years since EA Sports
released its last NCAA football
video game.
While the series of con-
sole-based games has been
snagged by legal hurdles, a
new edition may be on shelves
soon — and if Mississippi
State junior running back
Kylin Hill has his way, an im-
age of him hurdling a defender

The Columbus High School
boys basketball team isn’t
afraid to acknowledge it: Last
season was rough.
The Falcons finished with
a losing record just one year
after winning the state cham-
pionship, as the title-winning
team had largely departed and
left inexperienced players in
its wake.
That put Columbus in a re-
building stage from which the
Falcons haven’t quite emerged
yet. Coach Phillip Morris
knows his team is still young,
with only four players who saw
minutes last season back for
more. But with two returning
starters — a luxury Columbus
didn’t have last year — Morris
thinks his team can get back
on the right track.
“We’re gonna surprise a
lot of teams,” the second-year
head coach said. “I don’t think
a lot of people are expecting a
lot from us, but I think down
the line we’re definitely gonna
surprise some people.”
Led by senior Gabriel Wil-
liams and junior Blake Bur-
nett, Columbus will face a
tough schedule again. The Fal-
cons may have moved down to
Class 5A, but they’ll still face
a top team from each of the
state’s upper classes: Ponto-
toc in Class 4A, Center Hill
in Class 5A and Starkville in
NCAA’s ruling Tuesday that
it will allow players to profit
from their names, images and
likenesses stands to change
the framework of college ath-
letics.
Following a lengthy debate
that was expedited with the
passing of California law SB
206 — a bill that prohibited ath-
letic associations, conferences
or other groups from prevent-
ing collegiate athletes in Cali-
fornia from profiting off their
name, image, or likeness — on
Sept. 11, the NCAA Board of
Governors voted unanimously
to allow such profits.
NCAA president Mark
Emmert issued the following
Class 6A.
Morris said those kinds of
opponents will put pressure on
a Falcons team that still needs
to bulk up. In fact, it’s already
been done — in Columbus’ re-
cent scrimmage with Center
Hill
“They just out-toughed us
in a lot of situations,” Morris
said.
Morris noted that the tough-
ness he expects from his play-
ers extends to the mental side
of things, too, and his young
team is still getting there.
“I’m expecting to start off
the season, we’re gonna have a
lot of growing pains,” he said.
“I think by the time we get to
district time we should be OK.
I’ve got a good group.”
Apart from Gabe Williams
and Burnett, the Falcons’ core
includes senior Antwan Bran-
dy, who’s poised for a big min-
utes increase, and junior Eric
Caldwell.
Sophomores Jaquarius Wil-
liams and Tre Dismuke are
also expected to contribute.
“They’re two very coach-
able kids: hard nosed, tough,
do anything you ask,” Morris
said of his 10th graders.
With the departures of big
men Jemarcus Moore and Rod
Grays, Morris turned to the
Falcons’ football team for a
post presence. Junior quarter-
back Ethan Conner will join
the team as soon as Colum-

‘No more flying
under the radar’
for Heritage boys

Heritage Academy boys bas-
ketball coach Russ Whiteside
knows how difficult it will be for
the Patriots to follow up on last
year’s success.
“It’s hard to be as good, be-
cause last year we did about as
well as we could do,” Whiteside
said.
His team capped off the 2018-
19 campaign with its second
straight state title and won its
first-ever MAIS overall cham-
pionship. That’ll do a lot to set
expectations high — and leave
the top-ranked Patriots with a
target on their back.
“We’ve just gotta get in here
and work and understand that
we’re more of the hunted now
than we are the hunter,” Wh-
iteside said. “There’s no more
flying under the radar.”
If Heritage Academy aims
to repeat an unprecedented
season, the talent the Patriots
have is a strong start. The team
returns nine seniors, including
first-team all-state selections
Eli Acker and Jared Long.
But Acker, Long, two other
starters and a couple key bench
players will have a late start to
the season. They’re on the foot-
ball team, which is gearing up
for next Friday’s home playoff
game, and they won’t rejoin the
basketball team until the foot-
ball season is over — “hopefully
after the state championship,”
senior point guard Reid Hus-
kison said.
“As long as we get out of
football season healthy and get
everybody going, we feel pretty
good about it,” Whiteside said.
Until then, the remainder of
the Pats will have to hold down
the fort, and Huskison is confi-
dent they can.
“I don’t think they should
have a problem with too many
of the teams,” he said. “I think
they’ll do good.”
Senior Steele Altmyer, who
broke his foot in the second
game of last season and missed
most of the year, will play a big
role for Heritage Academy.
“He can do a ton,” Huskison
said. “He’s a great shooter that
we have, and he’s gotten really
tall, so he can help us out on de-
fense.”
With the shooting Altmyer
and freshman Mack Howard
bring, Long’s leaping ability
and talent in transition, Acker’s
post presence and the strong
on-ball defense Huskison and
senior Carter Putt offer, the
Patriots check seemingly every
box. They also play with con-
siderable familiarity after years
and years together on the court.
“Most of these guys have
been playing together since
sixth grade, so the chemistry’s
really huge on this team,” Acker
said.
The Ole Miss football com-
mit knows well that Heritage
Academy will need to start
games with a bang to put away
upset-minded opponents.
“This year, the target’s on
our back,” Acker said. “Every-
body’s gonna want to beat us.”
Whiteside acknowledged as
much, but he said the Pats re-
main confident in their talent.
As long as his team works its
hardest, Whiteside said, Heri-
tage Academy will be at the top
again.
“We feel like we can make
another run at it, but you’ve still
gotta get in here and put in the
work and put in the hours that
it takes to do something special
like that,” he said.

A person with knowledge

left tackle ended his sea-
son-long holdout after not
getting traded.
During Cleveland’s
recent bye week, Browns
general manager John
Dorsey said he’s spoken
with Redskins president
Bruce Allen about acquir-
ing Williams. But when
asked if there would be
a deal, Dorsey said, “it
takes two to tango.”
Dorsey, who pulled
off a blockbuster trade
for Odell Beckham Jr. in
March, couldn’t get the
Redskins to dance, leav-
ing the Browns to solve
their left tackle situation
in the offseason.
The only big name
traded at the deadline was
Aqib Talib , but unlike sev-
en years ago when he was
dealt from Tampa Bay to
New England at midsea-
son, Talib is no longer in
his prime or headed to a
contender.
The Rams traded the
33-year-old cornerback to
Miami along with a fifth-
round pick in 2020 for an
undisclosed draft choice.
But the 12-year veteran
is on IR with a rib injury
and likely won’t play again
this season.
Talib will be an unre-
stricted free agent this
winter after playing out
the six-year, $57 million
deal he signed with the
Denver Broncos, with
whom he won the Super
Bowl four seasons ago.
That makes this dead-
line deal akin to the ones
seen so often in the NBA
when a tanking team ab-
sorbs a contract from an-
other team in exchange
for draft capital.
The Dolphins (0-7)
could keep Talib on IR
before letting him walk in
free agency, an approach
that would allow them to

circulated of the ori-
gin of piano burning.
These stories range
from honoring fallen pilots
to celebrating an end
to music lessons. After
hearing of the folk tales,
Ben Sala, construction
manager for Columbus Air
Force Base, knew he found
the perfect name for a
“new type of bar” he plans
to open early next year in
Columbus: The Burning
Piano.
Sala, along with his
sister and brother-in-law,
Lisa and Stephen Sims are
in the midst of renovating
the former Catfish and
Chords building at 2222
Military Road, into a 21
and up piano bar.
The idea first came to
fruition when siblings Sala
and Sims watched a duel-
ing piano show at Dock on
the Island in Fort Walton
Beach, Florida.
“The whole way back
home we just kept saying
Columbus needs some-
thing like this,” Sims said.
“Everything just kind of
started falling into place.”
Once opened, The
Burning Piano will offer
customers high-end cock-
tails and fresh food. But
on weekends, the bar will
host a dueling piano show
with two pianists facing
each other, taking song
requests from the crowd
and encouraging those in
the audience to sing and
laugh along.
With a lot of
room to work
with — nearly
4,000 square
feet — the sib-
ling duo started
renovating Mary Pollitz

he plans to remodel an
