Homework 2

Problem 1

The sample data of call setup delay are

802 809 812 814 817 819 823 855 862 883 886 892 896 896 900 901 901 904
905 930 932 933 948 958 959 963 964 968 970 970 972 976 981 981 982 983
985 989 990 991 1008 1012 1022 1028 1033 1034 1046 1048 1050 1051

a) Confidence interval on the mean call setup delay is given by

Where is the sample mean of the call setup delay, s is the standard deviation, n=50 is the sample size
and is the 1 ) - quintiles of the standard normal variable.

The sample mean is

1 1 1
802 809 … 1051 940.68
50 50

the standard deviation is

1 1
940.68 72.46
1 49

The 90% confidence interval on the sample mean is,

72.46
940.68
√50

940.68 10.25

where 0.1 and . . 1.645 , thus

940.68 10.25 1.645 950.68 16.86

The 90% confidence interval for the mean of call setup delay is (923.82, 957.54)

b) The relative precision (%r.p.) of the confidence interval is

72.24
10.25
% . . 100 √ 100 √50
940.68
% . . 1.79
c) The confidence interval on the q quantile is given by
1

Where 1 0.5 1 2 0.5 1

For n=50 and q=0.5 than nq(1-q)=12.5>10 we can use the formula given above for the confidence interval
of 0.5 quantile or median of the call setup delay.

The sample data are already sorted and . 1.645, than

1 50 0.5 0.5 1.645 50 0.5 1 0.5

1 19

2 50 0.5 0.5 1.645 50 0.5 1 0.5

2 32

The 90% confidence interval on the 0.5 quantile is , 906, 976 .

Problem 2

The number of disk I/O’s performed by a set of programs were measured as follows:

23 33 14 15 42 28 33 45 23 34 39 21 36 23 34 36 25 9 11 19 35 24 31 29 16 23 34 24 38 15 13 35 28
b) The mean number of disk I/O’s per program is

1
23 28 27
33

c) Standard deviation is

1
9.49
33 1

The 90% confidence interval for the mean is

.

9.49
27 1.645
√33
24.19, 29.63

d) Let p be the fraction of programs make less than or equal to 25 I/O’s than

16
25 / 0.485
33

Because the n*p=16>10 , than the 95% confidence interval for the fraction p is obtained using the
expression given below

1
.

0.485 0.171

Thus the c.i. for the p is (0.314, 0.655)

Problem 3

a) LANdecoder32 provides the platform to monitor network operations and health, and capture selected
data to aid in diagnosing and isolating network problems. LANdecoder32 includes functionality to
provide expert analysis of captured data and also can generate traffic on the network to aid in problem

emulation. LANdecoder32 supports both real-time data capture and long-term snapshot files that
allow post-event analysis.

b) Network Tap: A network tap is a hardware device which provides a way to access the data flowing
across a computer network
c) Pingroute.pl is a simple Perl script to ping all nodes along a traceroute and provide min, max,
avg response time, plus packet loss analysis for 100 and 1400 byte packets. The source is
freely available for SunOS, Solaris, Linux, AIX and Digital OSF1.

Problem 4

The ping delay data are collating by pinging www.uit.no (University of Tromso) form the PTK (Post and
Telecommunication of Kosovo).

a) To check the independence of the data we have constructed the correlation plot for j=1,2,3,4,5,6
(Fig.4.1) and the scatter diagram for data one apart, two apart and three apart (Fig.4.2a, b, c).
