QUARTERLY EXAMINATION

Subject: Christian Morality


Type of Exam: Oral
Teacher: Rev. Fr. Julius R. De Sagun
Schedule: October 16 – 8:30am sharp

REVIEW GUIDE

Instructions/Mechanics: The following are thesis statements on various moral issues. You are given one
week to study and to prepare to defend the theses. Your exam schedule will be pre-arranged with oyu
by draw lots. ). During the exam, the following steps will be followed:

1. All the students must stay outside silently and wait for your time slot.
2. On your time slot, enter the classroom.
3. Go to the teacher’s table and draw one question from the “fish bowl”. Once you draw a
question, you cannot change it.
4. Go to the designated chair and make an outline of your detailed explanations on the thesis
statement for 5 minutes.
5. After 5 minutes, the teacher will ring the bell. Stand up before the teacher to defend the
thesis statement. Say everything that you know about the given thesis statement.
6. Even if you are done speaking undertime, you need to wait for 5 minutes before you leave the
classroom.
7. The teacher will not speak. He will just say any of the following: “start, stop, or thank you”

Nota Bene: Everytime the bell rings (at exactly 5-minute interval), the next student will enter the
room to do the same process. No thesis statement will be repeated. After the exam, go and do
not tell any of your classmates about the topic that you have drawn. Pray well!

Tip: The teacher will wait for the student to mention and elaborate on the key moral principles
which do not necessarily appear in the thesis statements that he provides. It is the role of the
students to point out such underlying principle.

Thesis Statements:

1. Human beings are IMAGO et SIMILITUDO DEI.


2. In any medical procedure there must be a FREE AND INFORMED CONSENT of the patient or the
immediate relative (in case when the patient is unconscious or in the state of coma).
3. A wrong act becomes a SIN when it is done wilfully under one’s intention.
4. SURROGACY is outside the normal course of parenthood.
5. Unintentional killing is morally justified only when it falls under the PRINCIPLE OF DOUBLE-
EFFECT.
6. Conscience has various QUALITIES.
7. ARTIFICIAL (IN VITRO) FERTILIZATION is morally questionable.
8. Human LIFE is sacred.
9. ABORTION is a generic terminology to mean “ending the life of the unborn”.
10. Human Beings are created to be essentially GOOD.
11. All wrong-doings fall under the SEVEN CAPITAL SINS.
12. CONCUPISCENCE is a modifier of Human Acts.
13. A Fetus is a HUMAN BEING WITH POTENTIAL and not a potential human being.
14. A Sin is saying “NO” to God’s Love.
15. God gave FREEDOM to human beings – a power rooted in reason and will.
16. SEX is the biological aspect of one’s personhood based on the appearance of genitals.
17. The object of morality is not the Acts of Man but the HUMAN ACTS.
18. SICKNESS/DISEASE has a salvific value.
19. The human being DOMINATES all other God’s creatures.
20. God gave the humankind the DECALOGUE.
21. Justice is a requirement in POLITICS.
22. God created only two SEXES.
23. MUTILATION of any body parts has moral considerations.
24. While man is sinful, GOD IS MERCIFUL.
25. COSMETOLOGICAL PROCEDURES (e.g. PLASTIC SURGERY) has moral considerations.
26. To say “DON’T KILL” is not a political statement.
27. Sex is not solely for PLEASURE.
28. GRACE builds on nature.
29. AGERE SEQUITUR ESSE
30. Human beings has DIGNITY.
31. PRE/EXTRAMARITAL SEX are against one of the Sacraments instituted by Christ.
32. FAITH ETHICS is about God’s revelation.
33. Everything on earth will fade except the CARDINAL VIRTUES.
34. The framework of Christian Morality is SEQUILA CHRISTI.
35. CONSCIENCE is the inner sanctuary of the human being – a moral faculty that urges human
being to do his moral obligations.
36. There are some sectors that help in the FORMATION OF CONSCIENCE.
37. MARRIAGE has goals.
38. The human person is a RATIONAL BEING with body and soul.
39. MASTURBATION AND PORNOGRAPHY are against God’s designs.
40. Some sins are personal, others are social – the so called SIN OF THE WORLD (in the Agnus Dei).
41. Blasphemy is against the SECOND COMMANDENT.
42. Christ is REDEMPTOR HOMINIS.
43. Even in the WEAKEST AND THE DYING POINT of the human person, his/her death is only in
God’s hands.
44. LIGATION AND VASECTOMY are not morally permissible.
