E AND HEALTH
PRIMARY MATERIALS FOR OUTDOOR
RECREATION
MOUNTAIN BIKE
A mountain bike or mountain
bicycle (abbreviated MTB) is a bicycle
designed for off-road cycling. Mountain
bikes share similarities with other
bicycles, but incorporate features
designed to enhance durability and
performance in rough terrain.

RAFT BOAT

A raft is any flat structure for

support or transportation over water. It
is the most basic of boat design,
characterized by the absence of a hull.
Rafts are usually kept afloat by using any
combination of buoyant materials such
as wood, sealed barrels, or inflated air
chambers, and are typically not
propelled by an engine.

SKIS

A ski is a narrow strip of semi-rigid

material worn underfoot to glide over
snow. Substantially longer than wide and
characteristically employed in pairs, skis
are attached to ski boots with ski
bindings, with either a free, lockable, or
partially secured heel. For climbing
slopes, ski can be attached at the base of
the ski.
HOT AIR BALLOON

A hot air balloon is a lighter-than-

air aircraft consisting of a bag, called an
envelope, which contains heated air.
Suspended beneath is a gondola or
wicker basket, which carries passengers
and a source of heat, in most cases an
open flame caused by burning liquid propane.

PARACHUTE

A parachute is a device used to slow

the motion of an object through an
atmosphere by creating drag. Parachutes
are usually made out of light, strong
fabric, originally silk, now most
commonly nylon. They are typically
dome-shaped, but vary, with rectangles,
inverted domes, and others found.

RIFLE GUN

A rifle is a portable, long-barrelled

firearm designed for long-range precision
shooting, to be held with both hands and
braced against the shoulder for stability
during firing, and with a barrel that has a
helical pattern of grooves cut into the
bore walls.
CAMPING TENT

A tent is a shelter consisting of

sheets of fabric or other material draped
over, attached to a frame of poles or
attached to a supporting rope. ... First
used as portable homes by nomads, tents
are now more often used for recreational
camping and as temporary shelters.

PARAGLIDE WINGS

The wing or canopy of the paraglide

is also known as ram air airfoil in
aeronautical engineering. There are two
sets of fabric on a canopy and it is
connected in such a way that it forms an
internal support material by forming row
cells. The wings are made either of rips
ton polyester or of nylon fabric.

KAYAK BOAT

A kayak is a small, narrow

watercraft which is typically propelled by
means of a double-bladed paddle. The
traditional kayak has a covered deck and
one or more cockpits, each seating one
paddler. The cockpit is sometimes covered
by a spray deck that prevents the entry of
water from waves or spray,
differentiating the craft from a canoe.
BACKPACKS

A backpack is, in its simplest frameless

form, a cloth sack carried on one's back
and secured with two straps that go over
the shoulders. Backpacks are commonly
used by hikers and students, and are often
preferred to handbags for carrying heavy
loads or carrying any sort of equipment,
because of the limited capacity to carry
heavy weights for long periods of time in the hands.

SNORKEL

Snorkel, a breathing tube used for

swimming at the surface with the face
down, called snorkeling. Use of this
equipment allows the snorkeler to observe
underwater attractions for extended
periods with relatively little effort and to
breathe while face-down at the surface.

ATV MOTOR

An all-terrain vehicle (ATV), also

known as a quad, quad bike, three-
wheeler, four-track, four-wheeler, or
quadricycle, as defined by the American
National Standards Institute (ANSI) is a
vehicle that travels on low-pressure tires,
with a seat that is straddled by the
operator, along with handlebars for
steering control.
DIVING CYLINDER

A diving cylinder, scuba tank or

diving tank is a gas cylinder used to store
and transport the high pressure breathing
gas required by a scuba set. It may also be
used for surface-supplied diving or as
decompression gas or an emergency gas
supply for surface supplied diving or
scuba. Cylinders provide gas to the diver
through the demand valve of a diving
regulator or the breathing loop of a diving
rebreather.

SURFBOARD

A surfboard is an elongated
platform used in surfing. Surfboards are
relatively light, but are strong enough to
support an individual standing on them
while riding an ocean wave. Major
advances over the years include the addition of one or more fins (skegs) on
the bottom rear of the board to improve directional stability, and numerous
improvements in materials and shape.

CANOE BOAT

A canoe is a lightweight narrow

vessel, typically pointed at both ends and
open on top, propelled by one or more
seated or kneeling paddlers facing the
direction of travel using a single-bladed
paddle. Canoes are widely used for
competition and pleasure, such as racing,
whitewater, touring and camping, freestyle, and general recreation.
HARNESS

Harnesses are for verticality sports

like canyoning, climbing or caving, but also
for adventure courses and work-at-height.
When selecting a rope for canyoneering it
is important to know that canyoneering
ropes are made specifically for the rigors
of canyoneering and differ significantly
from stretchy dynamic climbing ropes.

TREKKING POLES

Trekking poles (also known as

hiking poles, hiking sticks or walking
poles) are a common hiking accessory used
to assist walkers with their rhythm and
provide stability on rough terrain. Hikers
for the same reasons— to provide some
rhythm to their walking pace and for added
support, usually use these poles

SWIMMING GOGGLES

Goggles, or safety glasses, are

forms of protective eyewear that usually
enclose or protect the area surrounding
the eye in order to prevent particulates,
water or chemicals from striking the eyes.
Must be watertight to prevent water, such
as salt water when swimming in the
ocean, or chlorinated water when
swimming in a pool, from irritating the
eyes or blurring vision.
JET SKI

Jet Ski is the brand name of a

personal water craft (PWC). The term is
often used generically to refer to any type
of personal watercraft used mainly for
recreation, and it is also used as a verb to
describe the use of any type of PWC. A
runabout style PWC typically carries 1–3
people seated in a configuration like a
typical bicycle or motorcycle.

COMPOUND BOW

In modern archery, a compound

bow is a bow that uses a levering system,
usually of cables and pulleys, to bend the
limbs. In general, compound bows are
widely used in target practice and hunting.
The pulley/cam system grants the user a mechanical advantage, and so the
limbs of a compound bow are much stiffer than those of a recurve bow or
longbow. DARIELLE D. MENAMIDEZ STEM
