Electrical Design Criteria

Wiring circuits/pathways
The re alarm system though fully capable of independent standalone operation shall be connected to the central emergency
command control center for the centralized monitoring and command control operations.

Fire alarm system - network topology example

Wiring
The system designer shall complete an assessment of the facility and develop the class and survivability recommendations for the
re alarm system wiring including but not limited to the following:
initiating device circuits (IDC),
signalling line circuits (SLC),
noti cation appliance circuits.
The wiring network for the re alarm and detection system must be designed in accordance with the applicable codes and must
address the criticality of the facility. The extent of redundancy and survivability must be determined to properly specify the
appropriate wiring system.
The complete system shall be supervised against failure of operating power, open circuits, and ground.
Communication lines between computer processing unit (CPU), eld control panel panels and re control center (FCC) to be fully
supervised utilizing a Class A data communication link style R (redundant) (DCLR).
The initiating device wiring circuits/ loop shall be provisioned with 40 percent spare design capacity.
Voice communication circuits/ loop shall have 25 percent spare design capacity.
All the re alarm cabling, either copper or optical ber (peer-to-peer network for panel), shall be 90 minutes re rated.
Minimum size of wire shall be 1.5 mm² stranded copper or as recommended by system manufacturer.
Installation of cables other than re alarm cables in re alarm raceways is prohibited.
Minimum conduit sizes shall be 25 mm or more as applicable.
The detectors shall be looped in accordance with zoning de ned by life safety strategy.
Supervision shall be maintained on all circuits even in the event of a power failure, when the system is on battery standby.

Pathways
Pathways (interconnections) shall be designated based on the performance characteristics de ned by re and life safety strategy.
All pathways shall comply with recommendations from NFPA, QCS 2014 and Civil Defense Department Qatar. All the pathways shall
be designed to Class A performance.

Separation
Peer-to-peer network shall be class A, with the return or alternative loop separated by two hours re separation.
The return loop of re alarm cabling for initiating devices and noti cation appliances shall be installed in as separate raceway from
the main loop wiring
