INDUSTRY NEWS
John Gugel has been described as “one of the true pioneers in the racquet sports industry.” A professional stringer
for over forty years, Gugel has a diverse background ranging from tour stringing to designing and marketing his
own racquet. Named Stringer of the Year by Tennis Industry in 2012, he has also been awarded “Top Design” by
Industrial Design Magazine for innovative racquet design, and been included on list of “New Top 100 Products”
from Popular Mechanics Magazine.
“The MonoGut ZX material has unique properties that lend themselves very nicely to a tennis racquet string,”
said Gugel. “It is extremely durable; very, very stable in tension; very easy on the body -- the wrist, the shoulder
and the elbow; and has very high elongation which generates tremendous energy on return and makes it very
easy to generate spin.”
These properties are why Gugel recommends the string, especially for younger players, to avoid injuries they may
receive from using stiffer string such as polyester. But because MonoGut ZX and ZX Pro are high performance
strings, Gugel said, “stringers need to have a high performance preparation and installation procedure to make
sure the performance is as it should be.”
MonoGut ZX and ZX Pro may be strung over a wide variety of tensions, Gugel said, up to around 60 lbs. This is
a much wider range than polyesters due to their stiffness, and provides greater control without the issues of
impact shock. “With MonoGut you can string for how you want to impact the ball, not what the string demands.”
Tips covered in the video include: grommet preparation; tension head speeds on constant pull machines;
avoiding string damage; clamping procedures; allowing time for elongation, proper knot tying; and more. The
video may be seen on the Ashaway website via a special link on the Home page, or on YouTube by searching for
“Ashaway MonoGut ZX Stringing Video.”
Ashaway Racket Strings are made by Ashaway Line & Twine Mfg. Co., the only U.S. manufacturer of string for
squash, tennis, racquetball, and badminton. Operated by the Crandall family since 1824, Ashaway has been
making racquet strings since 1949, and is responsible for several important technical innovations. Ashaway
has been the Official String of USA Racquetball for more than fifteen years. Ashaway Line & Twine Mfg. Co. also
makes braided products for medical and industrial applications.
Dunlop will also be the official stringing service and will have a DUNLOP
sales stand at the tournament.
DUNLOP partners with some of the largest ATP tournaments like Rome,
Madrid, Monte Carlo and Shanghai. The tournament will also promote the
newDunlop Srixon rackets in the USA.
GF Sports is happy to have the partnership with Dunlop, whose balls are
used in many oft the ATP 1000.

INDUSTRY NEWS
“Marketers are savvy,” says TEAM8 Founder and CEO Tony Godsick,
Federer’s agent. “When they encounter an athlete who has consistently
excellent results, a humble attitude, a commitment to helping others,
and a love for the sport, they want to be associated. Roger enjoys being
able to bring value to his incredible and loyal corporate partners. We
should all celebrate the global nature of tennis that creates a platform
for a special individual like Roger to reach these heights and be in the
company of athletes who play the most popular sports in the world.”
Federer was fourth in this year’s Forbes list of the world’s highest-paid
athletes, which was released in June. The Swiss came in at a combined
$64 million, $58 million of which he earned from endorsements and $6
million of which came from prize money. Novak Djokovic placed second
among tennis players in 16th, registering a combined $37.6 million.
Other ATP World Tour stars inside the Top 50 were Kei Nishikori (26th,
$33.9 million), Rafael Nadal (33rd, $31.5 million) and Andy Murray (40th,
$28.8 million).
“I’m really honoured to have worked with Stan, who is a great tennis player, but more importantly a fantastic
person. I want to thank the whole team behind Stan for all the work over the past four years. It’s been a teamwork
and a privilege from the first day.”
Norman began to coach Wawrinka in April 2013, when Wawrinka was No. 17 in the Emirates ATP Rankings. The
former World No. 2 from Sweden helped Wawrinka to a 12-5 record in finals, including the 2014 Australian Open
(d. Nadal), 2015 Roland Garros (d. Djokovic) and 2016 US Open (d. Djokovic) crown, plus one ATP World Tour
Masters 1000 title at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters (d. Federer).
Wawrinka said, “I would like to thank Magnus for the amazing four years we had together. I will always be grateful
for the work and the time he spent on me to make me improve and become a three-time Grand Slam Champion.
He was not only part of my team but also part of the family.
“For now, I’m focusing on my rehabilitation and I will take time to decide with my team the necessary next steps.”
The 32-year-old Wawrinka finished his 2017 season with a 26-11 match record, including one ATP World Tour title
in Geneva (d. M. Zverev). He also reached the finals of the BNP Paribas Open, an ATP World Tour Masters 1000
Indian Wells (l. to Federer), and at Roland Garros (l. to Nadal).
During a nine-season professional career, which ended due to hip and knee injuries, Norman’s peak year came in
2000 when he won the Internazionali BNL d’Italia (d. Kuerten) and reached the Roland Garros final (l. to Kuerten).
Overall, the Swede was 12-6 in tour-level finals.
In February, the captain of the French team, Jo-Wilfred Tsonga, won the Marseille and Rotterdam tournaments,
both which were played with the X-One ball. These titles helped the French team in their decision-making
process as they considered many different balls.
Tecnifibre will also become the Official Supplier to the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas 2017 finals between France and
Belgium. For Tecnifibre’s Vice President, Pierre Bayssat, the partnership with the French Tennis Federation (FFT)
shows “a superb opportunity to show to the world the quality of this product and to communicate upon this
huge event.”
The 2018 event in Chicago will take place Sept. 21-23. “It’s personally
thrilling for the Laver Cup to be coming to my hometown of Chicago,”
says Katrina Adams, chairman, president and CEO of the USTA, which is
a partner in the Laver Cup. “To be associated with the legacy of the United Center and working with their team
will allow us to showcase this event and attract more players to our sport.”
Rebound Ace Portable is an interlocking, temporary court system that provides premium cushion and comfort.
It has beenused at several high-profi le events, including the Fed Cup, Davis Cup and the Singapore-based WTA
Finals, for which it was specifi cally created.
The inventor and engineer, who now lives in Palo Alto, Calif., has
made a number of innovative consumer products over the years,
and even sold a software company to Cisco Systems Inc. The
idea was to have something for recreational players that was
inexpensive— that basically would be in the same price range
as a new tennis racquet.” Gentil spent two years developing and
designing the In/Out device from the lab he fashioned in his home’s
living room.
In/Out has two cameras, each of which monitors one side of the court. The unit attaches to the top of the net
post with a plastic strap. When a player pushes a button on the screen on the top of the device, In/Out scans
the court to find the lines using artificial-intelligence software—an auto-calibration process that takes 10 to 15
seconds. The unit runs on a standard battery and also has a USB connection. You can use light and /or sound to
signal when the Ball is in or out.
But the unit does much more than call balls in or out. It also can provide statistics and HD video playback, which
players can use to help them improve. For instance, after playing or practicing, In/Out can show where all shots
landed, how high the ball was, how fast it was going, the spin on the ball and much more. In/Out does have some
limits, including a margin of error in millimeters that Gentil continues to work on improving.
Also, in doubles, the extra players may block the device’s line of sight, so Gentil recommends using two In/Out
devices. But, considering the Hawk-Eye system used by pro tournaments runs about $60,000, recreational
players, tennis clubs and facilities will likely find a $199 option appealing.
In addition to the coveted ‘Player of the Year’ title, this year’s four year-end #1 ranked players will also receive
a special prize of a one-week stay at the Mouratoglou Tennis Academy in southern France, to be taken during
2018.
The girls 14 & under title went to Russia’s Oksana Selekhmeteva. The dominant player of 2017, she spent most
of the season ranked #1, compiling a 37-6 win/loss record in singles. Curiously she won just one 14 & Under
title (the Category 1 event in Moscow), but she also claimed two Category 1 16 & Under titles in Italy, played on
the Russian Winter Cups by HEAD team and won two medals at the European Junior Championships – gold in
doubles and silver in singles.
Recent Tennis Europe Junior Masters champion Nini Gabriel Dica of Romania claims the Boys 16 & under title.
Prior to winning the Masters, he claimed the silver medal at the European Junior Championships, as well as four
other singles and two doubles titles.
“I feel very honoured,” Dica said. “I had an amazing year, and I want to thank my team, my family and everyone
who supported me. Thanks for this award, and for all the great memories I have with the Tennis Europe Junior
Tour!”
Another Junior Masters champion, Carole Monnet of France, is awarded the Girls’ 16 & Under Player of the Year
title. Restricting her play to Category 1 events, Monnet was the dominant player on the 16 & Under circuit this
year, losing just two of 24 matches and never losing before the final, claiming titles in Villneuve-les-Avignon and
Barcelona en route to the finals in Reggio Calabria.
She has an inspiring story, telling Tennis Europe, “Performance has no limits. One year ago, I was in a wheelchair
and today you announce that I am the Player of the Year: I am so happy! I’d like to thank all the clubs where I
played, my partners, and Tennis Europe for this experience. It’s been a great season for me with the support of
my coach Hervé Romain. Thanks everybody!”
In addition to the above Players of the Year awards, the Tennis Europe Junior Tour also recognises some other
special achievements during the season...
For the first time, two teams share the award. Both
teams won Tennis Europe Winter Cups by HEAD and
European Summer Cups titles, and both teams ended the
season with 27-6 win/loss records. It’s worth mentioning
that Daniel Rincon and Carlos Alcaraz Garfia competed at
both events for Spain, while Lyubov Kostenko and Dasha
Lopatetskaya formed the backbone of the Ukrainian team.
They were joined by Marc Othman Ktiri and Kateryna
Rublevska at the Winter Cups, and by Alejandro Correa
Linares and Anastasiya Soboleva at the Summer Cups
respectively.

Almost 60 delegates from more than 30 member nations attended the 2017 Tennis Europe Coaches Conference
in Sofia, where the event was hosted by the Bulgarian Tennis Federation from 9-10 October.
This edition of the conference was built around the theme of ‘online tools for coach education’ and featured
contributions from many of the leading names from Tennis Europe’s constituent national tennis federations,
as well as specialists in the field. The event took place over two days and was comprised of a mixture of lecture
sessions, interactive working groups and panel discussions.
The conference was opened on Monday, 9th October by the Tennis Europe Development Committee Chairperson
Christiane Jolissaint and the Bulgarian Tennis Federation CEO Katerina Guenova. The first day went on to focus
on online coach education tools and their implementation, while Day 2 looked at application, integrating and
motivating coaches to use online tools. The event closed with group discussions and online use of one of the
tools led by Frank van Fraayenhoven. Following the Tennis Europe Coach Education Conference majority of the
coaches took advantage of the opportunity to remain in Sofia in order to attend the ITF Worldwide Coaches
Conference, which got underway on Tuesday evening at the same venue.
Amongst the key speakers of the Coach Education Conference were Patrice Gruet Director at the Trans-Faire,
a French company specialized in coach and animators education in the field of sport. Kenneth Bastiaens
from MultiSkilzz - together with Niklas Fjeldstad from the Swedish Tennis Federation - presented the current
online possibilities of the unique development method implemented by MultiSkillz. Representatives from
several Tennis Europe A and B nations also shared their experiences with online tools, with contributions from
Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Great Britain, Germany, Switzerland, France, Austria and Finland.
The delegates were also treated to an evening at one of the Marinela Hotel restaurants – Ambasador, where the
official dinner was held.
ITF/Tennis Europe Development Office Hrvoje Zmajic summed up the meeting, saying, “The conference was
very well attended and we have been grateful to receive very positive feedback from the delegates. Online tools
for coach education is a relatively new but increasingly important topic for this event, and it was satisfying to
see so many speakers and federations eager to contribute. I’d like to thank Bulgarian Tennis Federation for the
excellent organisation and the warm hospitality that we all received during our stay.”Award in recognition of its
achievements in rebuilding tennis following the sport’s eradication during the genocide by the Khmer Rouge
regime in the 1970s.
ERSA China
We launched ERSA China October 17 in Shanghai. I gave a workshop for 10 tournament stringers from XRS
stringing team. I have worked with a few of the stringers already at the Shanghai Masters and the Australian
Open. The stringers were all CRSA Master Racquet Technicians and own shops.
All 10 stringers passed the Pro Tour Stringer Level 1 Tennis certification and a few will be able to pass the PTS
Level 2 next year. We are looking forward to a long and successful partnership in China. We will be deciding on
dates for an Asian Symposium for next year.
ERSA Taiwan
Bernie Chen and his MST team organized a great event. We were able to do a three day workshop and certification
testing in the top office building in Taichung City. We had 25 stringers from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore and
Australia. With their great connections wzith the stringing machine manufacturers we had 13 machines to string
on. The workshop was mornings tennis and afternoons badminton.
Evenings were practicing for the tests the last day. Afterwards we went out to dinner then early to bed for the
busy next day. We did around 30 tests in tennis and badminton, from ERSA Pro Stringer, ERSA Master Pro Stringer
Level 1 and Pro Tour Stringer Level 1.
ERSA Korea
Taekki Lee, KRSA Manager and ERSA Korea Manager organized a great two day workshop and certification
testing with 25 Korean stringers attending. This is my fourth time in Korea and always happy to come back.
Taekki has done a great job organizing the KRSA and training them up to a high international standard.
We had eight stringers taking the ERSA Master Professional Stringer certification. We have already confirmed
the workshop and testing for next October. The stringers here are always well prepared for the certification
planning who will take part next year already.
India is said to be the birthplace of modern Badminton and the Legends of India, Pullela Gopichand, winner of
the 2001 YONEX All England Open Badminton Championships, and Prakash Padukone, formerly ranked World
No. 1, participated to liven up the event. When players such as Srikanth Kidambi, who was recently elevated
to World No. 2, Pusarla V. Sindhu, and Saina Nehwal made an appearance, the voltage in the venue reached
maximum.
The event included a talk show, exhibition matches, and badminton instruction for local junior athletes. Through
the serious mixed doubles games played together with the Legends and junior athletes, every point drew
cheers from the audience, and everyone was delighted to see amazing plays. Peter commented that, “Indian
badminton has the potential to expand even further. We want to create opportunities for the generation that
will come after Sindhu and the others.”
The next event will take place on December 3rd in Paris, France, where Peter is coaching the national team.
