Platform of Responsibility

Scroll. Like. Post. Comment. Share. Some starts and ends a day scrolling through social
media accounts – specifically, Facebook. Yes, Facebook is indeed a powerful tool that helps every
individual to connect to the world. However, just what like Ritu Ghatourey said, “Social media
should improve your life, not become your life.”

Teenagers are the most users of Facebook in the social media market. This growing in
modern technology affects its consumers in some ways, both for good and bad. For example,
Facebook lets people to connect and communicate with each other through online messaging. On
the contrary, this tool also leads people for failing to have a normal and face-to-face conversation.
Moreover, this social media tool affects one’s academic performance especially the students. In
what means? First, some students tend to procrastinate. Spending 10 hours in school makes
students exhausted. Then after school, tons of homework await them. For a time, one wants to
relax and take a rest. For this reason, one used Facebook as a relaxation tool. But that relaxation
commonly leads to addiction – the behind reason of procrastination. Second, several students that
are now addicted to Facebook often have lower grades and poor performance in school.
Researchers found through the samples that 7 out of 10 teachers believed that their students are
becoming obsessed with social media sites such as Facebook. Their students appeared to be
studying while using Facebook and it shows that they got 20% lower grades. (www.scribd.com)

On the contrary, Facebook is somehow a tool towards a better academic performance of

students. Cutting out the stereotype of the word “effect” as negative meaning, Facebook affects
students in a good little way. Some may be addicted, but some students commonly use it for
widening their knowledge and using it for a good purpose. For example, they use it to connect with
classmates and teachers to ask for their missed lessons or activities. In addition, Facebook
Messenger is a convenient way of communicating with groupmates instead of setting a meeting
place to complete the group task.

Alexis Ohanian said that it takes discipline not to let social media steal your time.
Sometimes, Facebook is not to blame for its negative effects, but the person itself who uses it.
Somehow, the creator of Facebook suggests using their application for good purposes not for
making it your life, letting oneself to be addicted by it, nor bringing yourself down – socially or
academically. However, the result appears to be different from its intention. Facebook is a platform
of showing how responsible oneself in using it. Let Facebook be a brilliant means of relaxation
and not a distraction.
