ATP Finals Host City Candidates Announced

The ATP, governing body of men’s professional tennis, has announced the final shortlist of candidates
bidding to host the ATP Finals. The cities of Manchester, England; Singapore; Tokyo; and Turin, Italy, have
been selected by the ATP to progress and will now be assessed alongside London in the final phase of
the bidding process to host the ATP Tour’s crown jewel event from 2021 to 2025.
The announcement of the final shortlist follows an extensive bid application process that began in August
2018 in which more than 40 cities worldwide expressed an interest in hosting the prestigious season-end-
ing event. The final phase of the process will see the ATP visit the candidate cities to further review their
respective visions for the ATP Finals, with a decision on the successful candidate to be made not before
March 2019.

Chris Kermode, ATP Executive Chairman & President, said: “The level of interest we have received world-
wide throughout the bid application process reflects the rich heritage of this unique tournament, as well as
the success of the event at The O2 since 2009. It has been a highly competitive process, and the candi-
date cities on the shortlist deserve huge credit for the passion and creative vision they have shown in their
respective plans to continue the growth of our showpiece event.
“The ATP Finals have never stood still, remaining vibrant and relevant to fans, sponsors and media world-
wide at every turn. There’s no question that London has set a very high benchmark and, with the final
shortlist announced today, we believe we will be well-placed to determine the next exciting chapter of a
tournament that has come to represent the absolute pinnacle in men’s professional tennis.”

The ATP Finals were first held in Tokyo in 1970 and have been staged in some of the major cities around
the world, including New York City, Sydney, and Shanghai. The season finale’s longest stay in a single
venue was across 13 consecutive editions at Madison Square Garden from 1977-1989. The tournament
has been won by many of the all-time greats, including Bjorn Borg, John McEnroe, Pete Sampras, Roger
Federer and Djokovic.
The season-ending event features only the world’s best eight qualified singles players and doubles teams
following a year-long Race to qualify, giving the winning city a highly valuable association with an integral
narrative that ties together the entire ATP Tour season.

The tournament is to be held through 2020 at The O2 in London, where it has been staged to wide ac-
claim since 2009. The event has successfully established itself as one of the major annual sporting events
worldwide, broadcast in more than 180 territories with global viewership figures reaching an average of 95
million each year.
The ATP is working with The Sports Business Group at Deloitte to manage the bidding process.

Three Finalists Chosen to Present At Fourth

‘Tennis Industry Innovation Challenge’
— Three finalists have been chosen to present at the fourth Tennis Industry Innovation Challenge,
which will be held on Thursday, Jan. 24, during the Racquet & Paddle Sports Conference in
Orlando, Fla.

AccuTennis, PlayTennisConnect and SPARC-Virtual Tennis will present five-minute pitches about
their new product or service to a panel of judges—and in front of an audience of tennis and rac-
quet sports industry leaders—in a “Shark Tank”-like competition to determine a winner.
“We’re excited to see the presentations of our three finalists,” says Jolyn de Boer, executive direc-
tor of the Tennis Industry Association (TIA), which sponsors the competition. “This is our fourth
edition of the Tennis Industry Innovation Challenge, and we’ve seen some amazing products and
services come to light that are designed to help this sport and industry grow.”
This edition of the Innovation Challenge attracted 31 applicants. The showdown with the finalists
will take place at the Orange County Convention Center (OCCC) during the inaugural Racquet &
Paddle Sports Conference (racquetpaddlesportsshow.com), held Jan. 23-25, which will also in-
clude the TIA’s sixth annual Tennis Owners & Managers (TOM) Conference.
For industry professionals, registration is free for the Racquet & Paddle Sports Conference
(RAPS), which will include attendance at the Tennis Innovation Challenge Session on Jan. 24,
starting at 8:30 a.m. at the OCCC. A separate fee is required for attendance and participation in
the educational TOM Conference (register at racquetpaddlesportsshow.com).

The three finalists who will present at the OCCC are:

• AccuTennis (www.accutennis.com), which uses a computer vision system to provide live
feedback for recreational and competitive players, while also engaging coaches, players, parents
and fans and allowing them to analyze, track and watch players through video replay, shot analy-
sis and live-streaming.
• The PlayTennisConnect app (www.foundationtennis.com), which is a complete business
management system for providers, allowing facilities and their players to find, book and pay for
court time, lessons and events. The app provides an integrated experience for players while offer-
ing facilities a branded application to promote their business.
• SPARC (www.virtualsports.international), a virtual reality athletic game that marries screen
VR technology with intense broad-spectrum physical competition, designed to engage kids and
others who may not otherwise try or stay with conventional tennis, by providing an alternative path
to tennis participation.

The Innovation Challenge winner will receive $1,000, a national press release to thousands of
news outlets with a potential reach to millions of consumers, coverage in Tennis Industry maga-
zine, a one-year TIA membership, and additional exposure through industry marketing and social
media channels.

The Innovation Challenge will again be moderated by Carlos Salum, who is president of Salum
International Resources, a leadership performance strategy consultancy based in Charlotte, N.C.
Salum, who organizes leadership events as founder of TheSircle Executive Club, also consults in
sports technology with the SportsCouncil Silicon Valley, N3XT Sports and leAD Sports Accelera-
tor. He also has coached professional tennis players, including Grand Slam champions Gabriela
Sabatini and Sergi Bruguera.

Wimbledon Agrees To Final Set Tiebreakers

Wimbledon has agreed to introduce a final-set tiebreaker to its matches when the score reaches
12-12 in the deciding set, starting this year. This means the epic 70–68 fi fth set won by John Isner
over Nicolas Mahut in 2010—in a match that lasted more than 11 hours over three days—will
never be surpassed.
The US Open starts its final-set tiebreakers at 6-all. Both the Australian Open and French Open
still play out the final set in singles, until a player wins by two games.

Pro tour player Dominic Thiem and Babolat

have extended their partnership. Thiem plays with the Babolat Pure Strike racquet with a hybrid
string setup using RPM Blast rough and VS.

Daniil Medvedev, playing with the new Tecnifibre T-Fight 305 XTC racquet with
Razor Code strings, won his first ATP 500-Level title in October at the Japan Open in Tokyo. The
22-year-old Russian beat Kei Nishikori in the final.

KIRSCHBAUM X-PLOSIVE SPEED 125

KIRSCHBAUM brand has some good news for the 2019 !

One of the brand new polyester string for the new year to come is called KIRRSCBAUM X-PLOSIVE SPEED
and we're going to test the 1.25mm version.

If the name is not casual, we're expected to find a tennis string with a very strong power oriented attitude, with
a lively response and fast exit from the stringbed.

The static traction test from 5 to 35kg evidences a variable response of the string, getting stiffer and stiffer with
the load increase. The string is very soft at lower tensions getting harder and harder with the tension increase
with a behavior similar to polyamide strings, probably due to the elastomers used in the co-polyester mixture.

If you use it in the middle 20-24kg range you will find a very soft and comfortable string. Going up with the
stringing tension, from 26 to 30kg will obtain a stiffer stringbed with the sensation of a rigid, nervous and rock
solid racquet.

TEST

The dynamic stiffness, measure of comfort and soft impact on the arm during the play, has a medium value
considering a used string: 215-220g/mm  195-200lb/inch. The value is not very low on used strings because
of the plasticization of the string but the comfort level is very good using medium stringing tensions.

POWER attitude is very good and the name X-PLOSIVE SPEED seems to be very suitable for a string like
this!

Data tells us that TOPSPIN production should be very good because of the superficial coating, the high
resilience peak and the "pocketing effect" given by progressive plasticization of the string.

The string-set is very powerful but you can also have good CONTROL using a little higher stringing tension, a
moderate use of prestrech (5%-10%) or using the natural plastic-ductile response of the string that let you feel
the ball glued on the strings.

Dynamic tension stability is not one of the strengths of this polyester string but you can use it with no problems
for 4-8 hours of play at racing level.

A VERY INTERESTING STRING WITH A STRONG POWER ATTITUDE, GOOD SPIN PRODUCTION AND
GOOD COMFORT. IDEAL TO GIVE CONTROL ORIENTED RACQUET A LITTLE LIVELINESS, FOR
YOUNG PLAYERS, FOR LADIES AND SENIORS LOOKING FOR A SOFT AND POWERFUL STRING WITH
LOW IMPACT ON ARTICULATIONS. A SERIOUS CHOICE FOR RACING PLAYERS LOOKING FOR A
BOMB-ORIENTED RACQUET !

MSV FOCUS HEX SOFT 125

MSV FOCUS HEX is a well known modern classic for the polyester strings panorama; the new choice
proposed by the German Brand with Taiwan top-quality production is a slightly softer version of the "good old"
FOCUS and has been called FOCUS HEX SOFT, available in 1.15-1.20-1.25 and 1.30mm gauges.

This new string is not too different from the precedent, with similar base material, same hexagonal shape and
superficial finish but we could sign a -10/15% static stiffness value comparing with the "older version".

The static stiffness test evidences a tough string with a racing attitude, intended for medium to advanced
players with solid shots and good power production. Recommended average stringing tensions are medium-
low going from 18 to 22kg to exalt the natural resilience response of the string.

The material response is very linear and the response will be progressive increasing the stringing tension.

The dynamic stiffness, is quite high but we can't expect something different from a poly string with racing
attitude. The values are 230-225g/mm  220-215lbs/inch. The comfort is not the main attitude of this string
but we can work on it using low tensions as well as hybrid combinations with smaller gauges, multi-filaments or
natural guts, in standard or reverse versions.

TEST

The string has a very good reactivity and resilient response but with a control oriented feeling due to the high
static stiffness and very high spin production. The resilient peak is very high so the ball exit from the racquet
will be fast and lively giving the perception of high power.

Dynamic tension stability is quite good but you can feel a progressive response change and a tension decay
after 4-6 hours of play; dynamic string life is around 8-12 hours but be careful choosing the right gauge for you
basing on the frequency of string breakage.

A RENEWED MODERN CLASSIC STRING WITH A SOFTER FEELING AND STRONG RACING ATTITUDE.
A VERY GOOD CHOICE FOR INTERMEDIATE-HIGH TO PROFESSIONAL PLAYERS LOOKING FOR A
HIGH PERFORMACE STRING AND A PERFECT COMBINATION OF CONTROL, SPIN AND DURABILITY.
GIVE HYBRID MONO-MONO COMBINATION A TEST IF YOU WANT TO EXALT EXTREME ROTATIONS
AND GIVE THE RACQUET A SOFTER FEEL; MONO-MULTI HYBRID OR MONO-NATURAL GUT
COMBINATION IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR TOP LEVEL FEEL AND CONTROL IN A SINGLE COMBO.
