CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

This chapter will present and discuss the background of the study,

formulate research question, state the objective of the study, explain the scope and

limitation of the study, the significance of the study, and define the key terms.

1.1. Background of study

English is one of the subjects taught in Indonesia and as a teacher, teaching

English is more challenging than other subjects, such as teaching Indonesia

language, mathematics or etc. Teaching English must contain the 4 abilities. There

are: listening, speaking, reading and writing. The evidence can be found in each

day English teaching and learning, which caused interest to educating grammar

and vocabulary to whole in English language skill. Vocabulary refers to the

collection of phrases a specific person, team of people, socio economic group,

profession and so on, is aware of and uses the technical term for vocabulary is

Lexis (Crystal : 2006) Vocabulary can make the students deliver their idea in oral

and written form effectively.

The main problem in teaching learning is caused by the government

because they have abolished English subject from Elementary School (Sekolah

Dasar). So, when the students reach higher level (Junior High School), most of

them get problem with vocabulary mastery. It’s approved when the researcher (as

their teacher) taught about things around us (K13 book Chapter 4). Mostly

students didn’t know the meaning and how to use the words. And that is the
reason why teacher needs to find appropriate way to teach the students

successfully. One way in using Words of the Day Board.

1.2. Research Question

From the description above, the research question can be formulated as

follows:

1. Is the students’ vocabulary master improved by using words the day

Board?

2. How does the students’ vocabulary mastery be improved by using

words the day Board?

1.3. Formulation of the problem

Based on research question above, Words the day iboard mproved

students’ vocabulary mastery at 7th grade of SMP Negeri 4 Long Hubung.

This research used 2 cycles will giving treatment with 6 times actions to know the

uses of words of the day board in improve the students’ vocabulary master at 7 th

grade of SMP Negeri 4 Long Hubung.’

1.4. Significant of the Study

The researcher hopes that this research on teaching vocabulary using

words the day have some significances to the researchers and the readers in

general.

1. Theoretically

a. The result of the research can be used as an input in English teaching

learning process.

b. The result of the research can be used as the reference for the other

researchers who want to conduct a research in teaching English.

2. Practically

a. By teaching vocabulary using words the day, the teacher can motivate the

students in order to make them interested in learning vocabulary.

b. This research can be use by the teacher to provide the better technique for

teaching vocabulary.

c. For other researchers, if after reading this research and finding some

weakness can added in the next research.

1.5. Scope and Limitation of the Study

This research focuses on the use of words the day board to improve the

students’ English vocabulary mastery by words the day, focused on things, animal

an public places around us at First Year Students of SMP Negeri 4 Long Hubung.

1.6. Definition of Key Terms

In order to clarify key terms used in this research, there are some

definitions :

Words the day Board : is a bulletin board display of the key vocabulary

or concept words. Seeing words on the board which it hanging on the wall helps

the students become excited about words and understand that the words are

important and can be used of students by a book entitled “When English Rings a

Bell” & “English in Mind 1 Student's Book”.

Vocabulary mastery : a total number of words with meanings and

definitions used by someone or students to express the idea in a language.
